According to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Nicholas Negoponte, co-founder and chairman of MIT's Media Lab, has stepped down from his position to concentrate on his One Laptop Per Child initiative. The changes went into effect February 1st.
In recent months the One Laptop per Child program has gained the support of private companies, governments, and the United Nations. Negroponte hopes his hand-cranked, $100 laptops will help children in developing nations utilize educational material they otherwise would not have access to.
Lab director Walter Bender will also be taking a two year leave from MIT to head software and content development for OLPC.
MIT's Media Lab is involved in a wide array of projects, including wearable computers.
