Betanews reported a couple of days ago that Places have been dropped from the Firefox 2.0 release, originally it was included in the first public alpha release of Firefox 2.0, codenamed "Bon Echo," it had been pulled previously. In announcing the decision, Mozilla's director of engineering Mike Schroepfer said the company wanted to ensure a quality release. Places was a complete rewrite of the Bookmarking system within Firefox.
The lead engineer for Mozilla Firefox, Ben Goodger later responded to posts in the mozilla.feedback newsgroups where a user had said "If you take Places out of Firefox 2, shouldn't it be called Firefox 1.6?"
"I don't agree that Places was the one and only thing that sold Firefox 2 though. I took a look through the Firefox 2 Requirements page to look at some of the other stuff that's going on." It's clear that Firefox 2.0 will be a major improvement over 1.5, lets hope no more features get pulled.
Firefox 2 is expected to release sometime in Q3 of 2006.
