Three million of IE7 in first 4 days

IEBLOG: In the first four days over three million of you have already downloaded the final release. Thank you! (If you’re not one of those three million, you can get it here.)

We expect the numbers to continue to climb steadily until we start distributing via Automatic Updates in a few weeks. Clearly, we expect IE7 adoption to really take off then. If you haven’t tested your website with IE7 yet, please use the tools Scott posted about a few weeks ago to help you prepare.

With the final release, we got a chance to do some fun tech community activities. For instance, on the night of the launch, we hosted a dinner in San Francisco for about twenty leaders in the local blogging community. Afterwards, Jeremiah Owyang posted his thoughts and Thomas Hawk put up a great set of photos. We also finally let our product managers do some real marketing. We have the first IE radio spot that I can remember us doing, and we created some mobile billboards that cruised through 10 major U.S. cities. I’ve included a few photos below.

The Microsoft Internet Explorer Team sent the Mozilla team a cake for the release of Firefox 2!

A big thanks to Redmond, Washington!

P.S.: No, it was not poisoned

Thats you. Personally for me and my needs IE 7 beats in every way, shape and form FF 2.

There are plug ins for IE as well. I love the fact that people complain about security then install about a dozen unsigned extensions that could in reality do pretty much anything.

I remember when Gator first came out a lot of people installed it as it was useful and then look what happened. Im using both IE7 and FF2 at the moment the Spell Check in FF2 is about the only "Win" feature at the moment I actually like the look and feel of IE7 and after spending 20 minutes getting FF2 away from the dreary grey scheme with the dreary grey tab bar I can say that if it weren't for the Spell Check I wouldn't be using it.

#6.1 Unplugged on 25 Oct 2006 - 18:08
Seeing that Microsoft hasent started distributing Via Automatic Updates yet and IE has no "there's new updates" feature like FireFox which prompts you to download the whole thing again so they can claim "yet another download" then that's 3 million people that have taken the time to physically download and install the final.

On the next Patch Tuesday I would imagine that Automatic Updates will bring more than 800,000 new downloads a day.

Technically they DO something.

Advertisement generates revenue, which in turn makes the economy go.

I hate advertisement, but they don't necessarily do nothing. The guys driving them are paid, and this gives them a job.

FF and Opera users can't believe it? I used Opera for roughly a year nonstop, and this is all for the better. Two new browser updates to tinker around with.

Actually IE7 wouldn't exist in its current form without these other two browsers giving MS a small kick in the ass. Maybe you should be grateful for that, fellow victim of blind fanboyism.

For me, I'm grateful that at least the first browser that I launch on a brand new PC will be quite decent.

And for those who say "Firefox/Linux. Try it, it's good. My friends use it and they are happy. If you don't want to switch that just means you don't know how great it is or you are just afraid of changes! "
The answer is: "Being homosexual. Try it, it's good. Some of my friends are homo and they are happy. If you don't want to switch that just means you don't know how great it is or you are just afraid of changes! "

microsoft seem to be strongly backing IE7 and it is a capable browser at the core. i've liked it since the first betas but the only thing i dislike is the crappy UI. people had said about it for months but it was only altered slightly. big disappointment in that sense.

Well, a lot of other people do, specifically developers. They follow the standards, they get their site looking well with minimal to no bugs. The IE team fixed most of the crap in IE6, so it plays pretty nicely now with PNGs and CSS2.

You don't have to care, but a lot of other people do.

3 million downloads and counting. Well... considering you have to use I.E. to get the Microsoft Patches and Updates, I expect that number to continue to climb. The number of downloads does not infer that this is the number of actual users. Statistics are like Polls... they can be made to say anything.

Wrong.
You don't have to.
* WinXP updates without help of IE.
* Windows comes with IE. Again you don't need to download IE7 to get updates.

And don't forget that very few people know about IE7. And it is not on WindowsUpdate yet. So these 3 mils are people whow KNEW that IE7 shipped and DOWNLOADED it. I think these stats are rather preciese.
#23 eilegz on 25 Oct 2006 - 20:57

I'm getting rather tired of the "Firefox vs IE" war... it's so stupid...
#26 PatrynXX on 25 Oct 2006 - 21:52
Well installed it over the ol beta which wouldn't run on the Dell D800 laptop for unknown reasons. (probably a toolbar) And it still crashed. Mysteriously I tried it early this morning and now it works.

Still not as good as Opera. Which is where I'm typing from. And now having checked the Firefox 2.0 out, looks like it's stolen the close boxes from Opera tabs as well. The option of reopening the tabs where I left off is buggy. And neither the IE or Firefox seem to duplicate the option of forwarding like Opera does. That's my fav feature with mucking thru web galleries.
#27 +vlsi0n on 26 Oct 2006 - 00:55
tons of bashers on ie7 (what else was i to expect here?).

But congratz on the downloads, many a more to come.

Also it was a very nice thing to send the cake , peaceful competition!
#28 +IceDogg on 26 Oct 2006 - 01:52
Not trying to be a fan boy (whatever that means anyway) but I downloaded it too. I want my system up to date. But I never use it. I think most are going to download it to be safer just in case something launches IE instead of what you have set as the system default, which happens a lot. So, these numbers are not really that impressive...fact I would have thought they would be higher already. But as I've said elsewhere congrats to us all.. competition is good!
#29 +IceDogg on 26 Oct 2006 - 01:52

i was a die hard ff supporter, not as much as a lot of people, but i would always tell friends and family about the "other browser".

Im not a computer afficinado, but ill tell u why i used ff over ie6, because it was FAST, RELIABLE and didnt have a lot of security problems (popups and spyware). Problem with FF is u use it for a while and it bloats... i mean REALLY BLOATS, i remember once having 5 tabs open and it was taking up 150Mb of RAM!

I downloaded ie7, it runs fast, reliable, security seems to be good, AND it had great tab access right "out of the box" so to speak. Firefox is gone off my system now. I have nothing against firefox, but the problems and reasons i wasnt running ie are now resolved. So why not use the browser that was built by my OS's creator?
#31 nihilistphx on 26 Oct 2006 - 03:59
Good for IE7 & Microsoft... seriously, IE7 is a great improvement over IE6. I love the tabs, I love its speed and such. Its a good upgrade. Unfortunately, I only use IE6/7 for webmail access for my university, and that will not change since this release. Though I think IE7 is a really good browser with good new features (my favs being tabbed browsing and cleartype on webpages) I cannot live without my Fx extensions (namely: adblock [yes, neowin is whitelisted] and fasterfo. Once a great alternative to adblock and such is available to me on IE7 (and I mean perfectly cloned) I will once again be a 100% IE fan again.
#32 wicker_man on 26 Oct 2006 - 07:39
They should've ditched them pedal carts and used a Mercedes Smart or a QPod instead. 'Cuz the carts look like a hillarious representation of MS marketing team's vision.
#33 Julius Caro on 26 Oct 2006 - 08:56
Not me for sure. I'm waiting for the Spanish version. The download page was updated last night and they say I can get IE7 in spanish and german and finnish and japanese too. But the spanish one definitely isnt where they link to. So I'm still waiting.

Plus, one thing is sure. Probably out of the zillions of millions that downloaded firefox, only around 80 million use it. With IE7, every single XP SP2 will have it soon it or later, but chances are that those who already use another browser, will just install it and never use it.
#34 nookadum on 26 Oct 2006 - 09:17
Damn, most of the morons (a.k.a. fanboys) on this site definitely have no life. They're just browsers people. Unless these help create a cure for cancer or is a new game out, I don't see why people should be so excited about this.

I think IE7 is a great browser, yes, but there are a lot of things that still need to be improved (e.g. GUI and rendering-wise) before I can use it as my daily tool. It sure as hell is better than IE6, but Firefox fits my needs just fine. If people have problems with that, then they need to go outside more often.

#36 C_Guy on 26 Oct 2006 - 15:10
3 million in 4 days. Shave off a few zeros and add a few weeks and then you'll have FF's stats.

But at least Microsoft was gracious enough to send a cake!!!
