Thanks to NeoXP for posting this in BPN.

Softpedia is claiming “third party sources confirm that the next version of Internet Explorer is already cooking in the Redmond labs”. Internet Explorer 8.0 is supposed to be unveiled at MIX 07, at the Venitian Hotel in Las Vegas this year between April 30 and May 2. The session entitled “First Look at the Future of IE” is described as “Hear what Microsoft's browser investments mean to you, and make sure you get a voice in shaping the next version of Internet Explorer. Hear about what features and layout issues are being worked on, and let us know what causes you the most problems.”

Now, assuming the above is all concrete fact, let’s hit some speculation. Microsoft may not release Internet Explorer 7.x and will go straight to version 8; an alpha version of 8.0 is already an internal release in Redmond. At MIX 06, Bill Gates announced that IE releases would be between 9 and 12 months apart and recently at CES 2007, Microsoft confirmed that the development of Internet Explorer 8.0 had already debuted. Great right? No, not so great. A Microsoft representative at CES 2007 said they expected a period of 18 to 24 months until Internet Explorer 8.0 hits the market. ActiveWin.com is reporting the exact same thing.

Wow, I´m so excited.

I think this one will be much more interesting than IE 7, because with that browser, MS was mostly just playing catch up while trying to throw in a few extras. It'll be interesting to see part how their standard compliance work will be in that version, and also of course the other features.

i dont know why they are bothering to do this... cause really IE7 is "enough" already... personally i think IE7's interface sucks they need to go back to IE6's.

o well... i like firefox better anyways

ROFL, totally hilarious joke, give us more!

Um, without a single new feature mentioned, this is about as useful a post as "Hey, you know what, I betcha there will be a Photoshop CS4 from Adobe one day."

LAME

Not to sound too cliché, but...

It doesn't even sound like they're trying to convince us that they're being timely, anymore.

Microsoft hasn't announced when the next version of IE will be available. I do wonder who the "Microsoft representative" at CES was and if they were authorized to be talking about an IE release timeframe, or if they even knew what they were talking about.

v8.0? Why because firefox is basically going to v3.0?

Besides, I don't like running browsers that are attached to my system files, and running endless supplies of validation.

IE7 isn't attached to system files anymore than Firefox is.

O really? Show me an official list of files of all IE7 files that are not then which does not include the un-installer files.
#6.3 Jugalator on 15 Jan 2007 - 09:31
"Why because firefox is basically going to v3.0?"

No, because the former major release of ie was v7.

The higher version numbers of IE is easily explained by having been far longer on the market than Firefox.

Until IE will support decent add block integration, I'll pass. I am hoping Microsoft will allow for a customizable toolbar because the stock toolbar just sucks....Period! For now I'm with Firefox

Ad-block is never going to happen in IE. It makes no sense. Microsoft cannot put in an ad-block compnent as that would directly cannibalize the world's online advertising industry, and Microsoft would be the one to blame. This is the same reason why Firefox doesn't have ad-block integrated, even if it is such a great add-on. Close partnership with Google will keep ad-block out of a vanilla version of Firefox too.

Wow, that's pretty lame. My University that I go to doesn't even support IE7 yet. (not that I used IE anyway...)
#9 pyehac on 15 Jan 2007 - 06:27
Hopefully there'll be improvements, and maybe even some new features not found in other browsers.
#10 Peter McGrath on 15 Jan 2007 - 06:48
How is this news?

I'd be surprised if Microsoft WEREN'T working on the next version ao ALL products they have released.
#11 Pox on 15 Jan 2007 - 07:11
What causes us the most problems? YOUR CRAPPY RENDERING ENGINE. But will you fix it? No, because you want people to use crappy frontpage methods.

I agree. How is this news? Oh NASA is planning another shuttle launch, Apple is working on a new iPod, RIAA is planning to sue someone ......
#12.1 Bamsebjørn on 15 Jan 2007 - 07:23
You're kidding right? Why would RIAA want to do a thing like that?

So will this be a Vista only release? I'm guessing it will be.
#13.1 mrmckeb on 15 Jan 2007 - 08:42
It should be... make people upgrade and stop being tightarses.
(3 replies) #14 Neobond on 15 Jan 2007 - 10:00
I wonder if this has to do with Vista SP1, a significant upgrade to Vista delivering features that Microsoft would of proffered to ship but didn't have the time to complete.

IE7 is a great browser but Firefox is more appealing to me because it has an inline spell check, extremly handy for a blogger.

(I know IESpell exists, but it's not inline).
#14.1 Unplugged on 15 Jan 2007 - 10:37
Not yet all though with the amount of time since the last update im thinkingit may take a while.

I must admit the spell checker is the ONLY bonus to me. Dspite popular release I went back to IE with v7. I dont find firefox any faster at doing anything.
#14.2 Slimy on 15 Jan 2007 - 13:38
I'm not sure a spellcheck would be added. It would be nice but somehow I don't expect it to be. However, there probably are inline spell checkers for ie, somewhere.
#14.3 +Brandon Live on 15 Jan 2007 - 18:51
Neobond -

Vista SP1 is just a service pack. No new features, just a compilation of fixes.
#15 StarSabers on 15 Jan 2007 - 21:36
I like IE7, but when I upgraded my PC I decided I'd use Firefox. If IE had the plugins that Firefox had, I'd rather use it. IE's plugin site looks more like a big advertisement, and really isn't as quick and easy to find things as Firefox's is.

I didn't use FF on my old PC because I didn't like the form interaction and styles like I did in IE, and FF uses tons of ram. IE uses very little ram, right now FF is using 118MB's of ram.
#16 +warwagon on 16 Jan 2007 - 02:31
atlease the IE 8 icon is less ugly
#17 +Dakkaroth on 16 Jan 2007 - 14:06
Internet Explorer 8 theme: Now with rest of the stuff you can already find on Firefox/Opera!
