‘Fiji’ on track to debut before Windows Seven

Before you get all excited, I should emphasize that the source of this news post is a blog. In my defence, it is a fairly trusted one and Bink has already approved it. Fiji has often been referred to as the codename for Windows Vista Service Pack 1. You might as well throw that association out the window. It seems Fiji is actually the next version of Windows Media Center. This is a bit odd for many reasons, even if you don’t realize that the last two WMC codenames have been precious stones. Windows Vista’s successor is codenamed Vienna, formerly codenamed Blackcomb, but it appears that Microsoft is now internally referring to it as Windows Seven. Microsoft's plan is to release Fiji before Windows Seven, much like Windows Media Center 2005 (codename Emerald) was available before Windows Vista.

This seems to leave us with more questions than answers. If not Fiji, what is the codename for Windows Vista SP1? Why has Vista’s successor gone through three different codenames? Doesn’t Windows Vista already include the latest Windows Media Center (codename Diamond)? Shouldn’t Windows Seven include the next version of WMC? I guess not.

So... If Fiji is a successor to MCE... will be still be XP based, because Vista Ultimate already has Media Center. If it is Vista based... wtf then lolude? That's really really wacky. Is this gonna be some alternative if you can't afford Vista Ultimate and you want your Media Center?

If its a media centre upgrade it will just install over the top of Vista's media centre, which tis cool because in the past you had to buy a new version of the OS to get the newer version

The MCE team at Mircosoft has delivered a new version every year since the launch of Media Center.
They were codenamed Freestyle, Harmony, Symphony, Emerald and Diamond

The next version is Fiji.

What it may be is an update to Vista available to all editions with the Media Center SKU, that would cover more than the Media Center application. Remember how there was talk about making the interface for the Media Center version of Vista better than the standard interface?

Maybe this is a new product, using a section of Vista's code base. Which is a lite version.............. called Windows Media Server. It could be bundled with a very small PC unit and connect direct to Vista media centre and Home server and be a direct competitor for AppleTV. People like HP must be begging Microsoft for a standardised "Windows" package to put against the little apple box by now.

I think someones got something wrong somewhere.

Codenames aside.

We'll get service pack 1, maybe an updated Vista with an update MC and SP1 included, and then Windows seven.

Nobody said we weren't getting SP1 or that it doesn't exist. Only that Fiji, which everyone thought was SP1, actually isn't SP1.

I for one love Vista MCE and look forward to this. Hopefully they will bring more online video content into this release similar to what the Xbox 360 has.

From what I remember from the beta newsgroups this should include stuff like picture in picture for Media centre, along with digital teletext

I know so many people & firms that are waiting the Vista SP1 to move from XP to Vista... With so many versions of OS's from Microsoft I'm just ask how the heck nVidia or Creative will release a final and good driver...

First, I don't think they are correct in saying the Vienna is Windows 7.0--everything I have seen would indicate that its version number will be 6.1. Therefore it could very well be the case that Fiji is the codename for the Media Center Component of Vienna, or it could also be a free upgrade to the Media Center Components found in Vista (but I think that is less likely).

when has a microsoft service pack ever had a codename? i've never seen any.

here's why: a codename is for when you don't know what the product name is going to be. Windows Vista Service Pack 1 is not exactly a mystery.
