Gates no longer the richest man in the world?

Reuters quoted a Mexican financial news service while reporting the fact that Bill Gates, Microsoft Corporation chairman and co-founder, has been overtaken on the world's richest list by Mexican telecommunications tycoon Carlos Slim. A 27% surge in the stock price of Slim's wireless company, American Movil, in the second quarter means Slim’s worth, according to financial tracker Eduardo Garcia, is close to $67.8 billion compared to an estimated worth of $59.2 billion for Bill Gates.

Based on his past comments, Gates probably isn't disappointed. At a Microsoft conference in Redmond last year, advertising executive and TV host Donny Deutsch asked Gates if he would be upset if someday he were no longer the world's richest man.
"I wish I wasn't," Gates replied. "There's nothing good that comes out of that."
"It's better than being second," Deutsch said.
"No," Gates replied. "You get more visibility as a result of it."

Usually the people that say this are the ones w/o money. I remember some comedian once said that money doesn't buy happiness, but it will buy a jet ski, and have you ever seen anyone frown while riding a jet ski?

most rich people are unhappy but there still many that are happy and bill gates ia good example, as long as you dont get attatched to the money youll be fine and if you donate alot of money to charity then you will be happy.

At the rate at which he is donating I am surprised his rank isn't falling faster.
#2.1 K3vlar on 03 Jul 2007 - 23:01
The way you word that sentence, you make it sound like a bad thing.

I would have said: "At the rate Bill is generously donating to charities, such as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, I'm surprised his rank isn't falling faster than it is."

Bill gets a lot of flak about Windows all the time. Why not make him seem a saint for once?

exactly, how many people are there out on the internet that hate microsoft and windows and call bill gates satan even though he's donated so much to charity, windows revolutionized computing whether linux users want to admit or not and bill gates has donated billions to charity and he's only starting to get credit for everything he's done when a few years ago people would throw pies in his face. wtf is wrong with this world? people hate him because outlook lags!

Windows still sucks (it's getting better but still) but he does do a lot of good with his charity work, I'll give him that.

wait, a mexican financial service reported this and no one else has? seems fishy... I'd like to hear it come from a more reputable source like Forbes or something else... then just a mexican financial news service which is probably trying to get attention..

#6 Netrack on 03 Jul 2007 - 20:12
who cares seriously, you can only be so rich before there is nothing that you cant literally buy, gates is doing far more important things than trying to maintain his top title, heck id love to see him give away all his fortune but a couple million to live on....seriously, give me two million, and anything after that ill be donating
#7 DemonicHawk on 03 Jul 2007 - 20:13
i was thinking along the lines of... something starting with a V and ending in an A

btw, how much money is he donating?

Well he is supporting the fight against global warm-up, helping homeless kids in Africa and so onnnnn. If he just come here in Macedonia to give me some cash will be a nice support. That way I will remember him when I become the richest man in my house. LOL.

It's not like he has $59 billion in his savings account, though. Most of his money is tied up in Microsoft (just like most of your money is probably tied up in your home, unless you're a renter). He can't just give it all away. What he does give away is probably a huge percentage of his "take-home pay."

My bet is Carlos Slim (just the name alone makes me question his business practices) won't do 1/10th of the good deeds that Bill Gates has done. Mexico is a corrupt country run by corrupt families. I still find it odd that this guy has become the world's richest man by making money in Mexico. That's not exactly the type of place that holds that kind of economy.

But whatever.

Yeah, just look at the name of his company, American Movil. That suggests to me that he services not just Mexico, but Central America, maybe even South America, as well.
#12.3 Danny1810 on 03 Jul 2007 - 22:50
A Mobile phone business is likely to make money even in poorer countries. The sad truth is that a mobile phone comes a lot higher on the poorer families priority list because of an inflated sense of status than something like decent housing or education for your children.

the guy has businesses all over the place. he also owns the parent company of CompUsa in the states. I've read somewhere that he's also a board member at SBC communications in the USA. he's a busy guy. However, I find his "charity" actions to be hypocritical. He has made most of his fortune with his communications company in mexico, he pretty much has a monopoly there for phone systems. his company charges outrageous prices for service, some of the highest in the world. then he comes around "wanting" to eliminate poverty. hmmmmm...... Makes me think that most of his donations serve him more than they do to the people that may get something from him. The tax write offs must be good for him. If he really wanted to help out poor people, he would charge a more reasonable rate for phone service. Let me put it this way, if the americans had to pay the equivalent amount to what mexicans pay for phone service, there would be MILLIONS of americans without phone service.

Mexico has a much better economy for making money than you think. An intelligent and hard working middle-class person has more opportunities to start a business and become rich in Mexico than in the US.

There are many Mexican families making millions in Mexico with honest and clean businesses.

I don't think so. 99% Mexico is a mess. Middle class? Please. I wish what you say was true as it would stop your main export which is the poor. If there were so many more opportunities to start a business and become rich in Mexico than in the US why the crap are millions still flooding our borders? Id love to see Mexico thrive as it should, but as it is you got a long way to go. How about some of you successful Mexican business men take back your country?

Yes, because you clearly know more than Huezo who actually lives in Mexico. Clearly.

Substantiate your imbecilic 99% claim with established statistical data.

AFAIK Gates' sperm is still the most prized by women in China. He should be careful, Kung Fu Communist assassins may ambush him with a tranquilizer dart and put him in a sperm harvestor to impregnate thousands of Chinese women with evil monopolist babies.

The world would be flooded with mediocre software.

#15 It's not a fake name, he owns, TELMEX, TELCEL, SANBORNS, and i think his wife owns EL GLOBO, also AMERICA MOVIL wich is in Central America and South America and many other stuff

and you wanna know why he is rich?, Telmex sells a 1mb line of DSL at like $39usd per month, without the phone service, so that's why he is rich.....I'm Mexican btw.....
#22 Mekun on 04 Jul 2007 - 02:37
Ya to bad monopolies are not illegal there. Whats disgusting is the gap between the rich and the poor in Mexico. You dont see people flocking to Mexico because of the great economy. The Mexican government is corrupt as hell and its a rich boys club there. 90% of the problems is the damn government not the people. The US government needs to put pressure on Mexico to change its attitude towards how it treats its own people. Maybe then they wont flock here for a better life.

http://www.forbes.com/lists/2006/10/WYDJ.html

Forbes has him at 30+ billion in 2006, his growth doubled in a year? I remember a swedish financial paper claiming the founder of IKEA surpasing Billy G too it was non-sense, they counted IKEA as a whole not what the founder actually owned of it.
#26 Ruciz on 04 Jul 2007 - 11:02
They are both worth an estimated 60 billion.. which means, in theory, they could spend a BILLION a year, for most peoples lifetime.. Thats 2.7 million a DAY ($2,739,726.03 to be exact)

What would you spend 2.5million a day on?
I would be lucky if I could spend $200,000 a day, every day, for 60 years (which is roughly 4.4 billion)
it would be quite the lifestyle, probably wouldn't make it more than 10 years at that rate.
