Apple Inc., known for its trendy line of iPod digital media player products, sold its millionth iPhone on Sunday, just 74 days after the combination cell phone-iPod went on sale and less than a week after its price was cut by a third. The electronics company previously said it expected to hit the million-sold mark by the end of September. Investors like today's announcement, sending Apple shares up $2.94, or 2.2 percent to $134.71.

On Wednesday, Apple CEO Steve Jobs cut the price of the 8-gigabyte iPhone from $599 to $399 and discontinued the $499 4-gigabyte version. The next day he apologized to those who had paid full price and offered $100 credits to early buyers. In a letter on the company's Web site, Jobs acknowledged that Apple disappointed some of its customers and said he had received hundreds of e-mails complaining about the price cut. Jobs added that "the technology road is bumpy," and there will always be people who pay top dollar for the latest electronics but get angry later when the price drops. "This is life in the technology lane," Jobs said in the letter Thursday.

the product may be good but it damn sure aint worth the price they want for it!

cause when is all said and done... a phone should be a PHONE and you just "call" people with it. it should not be a damn pc. lol

Er, some people want a device that calls people, messages people, browses the web, plays music and videos, etc.

i can understand that, but the iphone's price is just rediculous, thats the bottom line... cause after all it's basically a iPHONE ... so it's made to "call" people ... everything else is just a luxury.

sure "some" people might want a device that lets em do all that but it aint really "needed" in most cases.

but i guess me personally i look at it is i use a phone to call people and thats about it... everything (videos/browse web/message people etc) else i would just use a pc.

but i do have to admit i dont use phones in general that much so that could be alot of the reason why i dont get into the fancy stuff phones do.

but you do have some good points... but i guess when is all said and done i just cant justify spending 400+ on a iphone type device which main purpose is to call people.

p.s. one thing i dont understand at all is WHY people watch videos/movies etc on a phone/fancy mp3 player type device? ... just dont make sence to me (especially if you got to PAY extra for getting those videos on the device) .... cause those mp3 players are made to play music not watch video crap etc.

Steve "blow" Jobs is one smart business man. Create & hype a products to get the fanboys to stand in line for hours or days, cripple some of the technology, release it, let the fanboys make him a TON of money, then cut the price to kill off the inventory. Release a "newer" version with the crippled or deleted (on purpose) features and start all over again.
A phone for 600 bucks? Only a fanboy would buy one.......suckeeerrrrrrrrrssssssssssss

400 or 600... whats it really matter? , it's still a arm and a leg and after all, all people "need" is something decent (100 dollars ish phone) cause a phone should be a phone not a damn PC lol

When did everyone in the world get together and decide that we all only need a phone that is not a damn PC? I must have missed that meeting.

PS: I am writing all this from my HTC phone.

See? There IS an alternative to the Iphone (or iPhone as the Apple Marketing devotes insist on calling it.)
HTC make a whole line of smartphones that can do nearly all of the stuff the Iphone can do...
...and as an extra added bonus you can **GASP** change the battery.
Try doing THAT with your Iphone. Hope you've got some cutting tools handy.

Actually, HTC phones do far more than an iPhone full stop. The only USP of the iPhone is the UI - which is very nice - but it's hardware is.. well.. retarded for 2k7.

Whoop-dee-doo on the screen. I guess the fanboys are swayed by shiny objects LOL
I've been looking at the HTC phone also.
You have to look long and hard to find any review of the SOUND QUALITY of the PHONE
part of the iphone. You can find a multitude of reviews, but none really talk about how
well the phone works, personally, the most important part of the IPHONE. Maybe they
should change the name to iPod.....that also works as a phone if you really really really
need to use it as such LOL.

Without the initial hype, with the n95 currently in the market and counting that apple fanboys are mainly american then you cannot be too optimist.

Well something smells fishy. A couple of days ago they announce a 200 dollar price slash, which seems to indicate that all is not going to plan for the iPhone and then today hype it up saying that a million have been sold since launch. My guess is that most of that million is sold to channel and not to individual consumers.
#5.1 excalpius on 12 Sep 2007 - 02:21
Either way, they had hoped to have a million sold LONG before now.

This is the bit that amuses me. Customers getting angry that they've paid too much when they race to the store to buy a new technology so they can be the first kid on the block to have one? Early adopters of new toys always pay more and have to deal with the version 1.0 issues. That's just the way it has always been. They need to get over it and they're quite fortunate that Apple felt it was good PR to offer a rebate.
#6.1 Sheppard on 11 Sep 2007 - 06:20
Theres a difference, price cuts usually dont happen within the first 6-12 months of a products life AT LEAST. The iPhone has been out for what, a month or two at best and theres a big $200 price cut ALREADY, if i was an early adopter id be rightly annoyed as well.

Ummm... are we talking about cars now? Because a product that has only sold 1 million units and is only available in one country is hardly a "world standard". In fact, in the cell phone industry, that's a little blip on the radar.

Besides, I have yet to see a single person or company show any sort of "envy" towards Apple's attempt at a cell phone.

Indeed, in fact samsung sell a 1 million of phone of a specific line and this will be considered almost a failure but Apple sell 1 million and it's a success. :-/

Anyways, Apple want to reach the 1% of the market share, currently they are too far to achieve it. Today the amount of people that want a iphone is almost depleted in USA (the number of fanboys is quite limited after all), so a price cut will try to raise potential buyer, also they will try to increase the international sales, if fail then you can say, Apple screw it again.

A good products sell well and stable during a long time, a overhyped product sell well the first months but the rest of the year.

I think the iPhone is competively priced, especially after the $200 price drop. Take a look at PDAs/smart phones from any manufacture. You'll see many in the $300-600 range and that's after rebates too. Does anyone need an iPhone, no. Do you need a phone at all? No, but it sure as hell makes it really convenient. If you want a phone that calls people, then yes, your free phone will work great. If you want a phone that can do phone calls, work as a media player, access the internet, you're into a whole new ball game and that's where the iPhone comes in. Instead of comparing a standard "flip" phones, why don't we compare numbers on the sales of similar products. How many blackberries were sold in the first couple months they came into the game or the treos?

I have a free phone that I got when I initially signed up with Verizon. It works great, no complaints, it CALLS people. I also have a blackberry for my company. Typically, I have been carrying around both phones, my verizon for personal, and my blackberry for email. Being able to access the internet anytime I want (blackberry is slow as ...) is really handy. Come december or shortly after, I plan on dropping the money to buy an iPhone. Do I need it, no, but they are fun to play with and makes things convenient. It'll keep me from carrying my iPod too. (Don't start the argument about hard drive space.)

If you don't like the iPhone, don't buy one and stop hating. Do you hate every other phone out there with a $400+ pricetag. It's not Apple's fault for all the hype. If you had a product to advertise, wouldn't you think it was the greatest thing since the wheel and push it as much as possible? Get ****ed at the media for all the coverage.
#10.1 simon360 on 11 Sep 2007 - 18:18
Finally, someone with common sense.

It's a smartphone, people. If you don't want it, there's no need to hate it, there's no need to hate the people who got one, and there is definitely no need to flamebait, as many people have clearly been doing. I used to have a blurb in my signature that had a line at the end going along the lines of "I just like Apple, and if you have a problem with that, you clearly have bigger problems you have to realize.". It's cool technology (multitouch).

And here's the thing most people miss about the price: an 8GB iPod nano costs $199, an iPhone costs $399. Your average smartphone probably costs about $200 on a 3-year contract. So, an iPhone takes the iPod nano, combines it with a smartphone, and gives you one thin device that combines the features. I think that's a good deal, eprsonally.

You live in the UK. Unless you travelled to the US and tried an iPhone, you don't know whether it's better or not. Plus, that's been on the market since at least January, so the price has gone down, and AFAIK, the European cell phone market is much more competitive. And the features don't look all that groundbreaking, to be honest.

But it all comes down to a matter of opinion.
#10.4 whocares78 on 12 Sep 2007 - 05:38
dude , don't even attempt to compare it to the blackberry, the iphone will only come out looking a lot worse

As far as i know, US market is much competitive than UK market!! secondly, Orbit has much more features than iPhone. Its just the memory it lacks for which i use a memory card which can easily hole my latest play list synced using windows media player.

It has built in GPS, "configurable" interface (keep guessing what it means). I can install the program I want unlike the iphone which even restricts to develop one Gosh!!

PS: I have worked for "leading" mobile apps/games development company and have every handset available in the United states market!! May i ask, which feature of iphone amuses you the most and you think is unique in iphone? please don't mention the useless sensors.
