Verizon Wireless to Allow Abortion Texts

Reversing course, Verizon Wireless on Thursday said it will allow an abortion rights group to use its mobile network for a sign-up text messaging program. The announcement came a day after the Basking Ridge-based unit of Verizon Communications Inc. said it had denied a request by Naral Pro-Choice America for the program. "The decision to not allow text messaging on an important, though sensitive, public policy issue was incorrect, and we have fixed the process that led to this isolated incident," Verizon Wireless spokesman Jeffrey Nelson said in a statement.

The program by Naral, based in Washington, D.C., lets people sign up to receive its text messages by punching in a message to a five-digit number. Other leading wireless carriers have accepted Naral's request to use their networks and Verizon looks ready to follow suit. Nelson on Wednesday had said that abortion was among topics barred from mass distribution based on the company's code of content, but noted that the code had been developed "before text-messaging became a mass-market phenomenon."

Wouldn't even be a news story if they hadn't disallowed it at first. Neowin didn't post the story about them disallowing the abortion texts so why post the retraction?

Yeah, but now you only create a false impression that Verizon is the only company to allow this service when all the other major carriers already permit that, adding a link to the original story would at least clarify that fact for the rest of the readers. It's not just the news but how you portray it, but after all I guess Neowin never will surpass "Unprofessional Journalism."

It's there? What's the deal? Anyway, most people come here for tech news and elsewhere for world and local news.

However, this was on Drudge Report on Wednesday, so I had already read that Verizon had banned it. Now I see they reversed that, which I wouldn't have (yet) known if I didn't read Neowin. And a good move on Verizons part.

...Because Neowin is a liberal organization!

Companies shouldn't fall for a bunch of femi-Nazis.

I can't wait to see abortion commertials.
I think it would go like this:

"Ladies, we all know we 'forget' to ask guys to put on a condom every once in awhile. It happens, and when it does, you can count on Fetus Vacuum Central to take care of that unwanted life living inside you. Sure, you might be a slut, but hey.. that does not mean you can't get great service and a great price if you act now! Operators are standing by to answer any questions you have about justifying murder of an unborn life. CALL NOW!"

I would love to see that.

Why wait when you can craft your own anti-abortion commercial? Maybe one targeting sub-Saharan Africa:

"Thinking about getting rid of that precious life growing inside of you?

Don't do it!! Give that child the opportunity to be born into a world of starvation, disease, and overpopulation! Don't waste that life! If he survives into his teen years, there are plenty of warlords that would love to teach him the fine arts of torture, rape, and ethnic cleansing!

However, if you don't want that fate for your unborn child, fear not! There are plenty of white, fundamentalist Christian families in the US that would love to adopt your AIDS-infected black baby and bring him into their homes and families! Don't wait! Apply today!"
