IMHO Facebook is for people that it's too dumb (or lazy) to own a real site but in the same time, they want to be more "elitist" that the people of myspace.

Unless you run a business or have something worthwhile to offer, then owning a 'real site' doesnt make much sense. Can't say many people care about worthless blogs or online diaries. I have run websites before but I simply use Facebook to keep in touch with old friends. Your "elitist" point is not really valid any more either because you no longer need a network to be able to create a Facebook account. but whatever

QFT.

The advantage of social networking sites is that you can browse other people's profiles and search for people - if everyone had their own website few people would actually find them, making them virtually useless. Obviously a personal website is preferable but if you have twenty friends then you have to browse each site, rather than going to one and navigating from there.

Facebook needs more resources to assist in stalking people. I'd like to see a system implemented where you can follow someone with a live video feed.

If they ever allow skinnable crap like myspace has where ever page wants you to tear your eyeballs out due to flashing lights, loud annoying music and horribly designed pages...ill take my account off... i cant stand that crap

I fail to see why a news post, in which improvements for another website are suggested, exists on the Neowin front page? Facebook is just one of many social networking websites.

The article mentions video. He seems to have not really done his research properly, cos there is an official video app by Facebook in the applications list.

Video is a profile application. Not a group application, which is what the article is about.

Ah! I get you. Thanks.

lol
all of you are complaining about applications. just DON'T install them... geez... i have an account in facebook and i think it is better than myspace with all the ads and pops up. mine is pretty clean without all the useless applications.

Get rid of : Food fight, Zombies, Pro-poke, x-poke, etc-poke, Vampire, pets, fish, etc.... it's all garbage.

A decent blogging system would be good. One where I can manually edit the date (so I can migrate my myspace blog)

Well I'm going to say it and without this coming off at "spam", Virb seems to be where it's going. Yes, yes, yes I work there. But that's not the point of the post. The fact of the matter is that Virbs designed by people who actually know what they're doing and wasn't designed as a get rich quick lets sell out to make money. It offers both customization while keeping it to a point where you don't have a bunch of kiddies making horrible junk loaded profiles and spam. The default layout is far better than myspaces and even facebooks and you can do far more than you can do with myspace or facebook.

Facebook needs to stop trying to be like MySpace just as MySpace needs to stop trying to be like FaceBook and MySpace just needs to die.

I can't remember where I was reading it at, but there's a group of people saying it's an FBI front for keeping tabs on people. At first I laughed then read more about it and they have legit reasons to think that when you look into the people who are running Facebook.

I still laugh at that idea a little, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was true.

Get rid of those freaking applications! Ever since they opened up their API, facebook has suffered from an onslaught of useless garbage. I don't want to "Give a beer to <name>!" ESPECIALLY not when I have to install the particular application to do it. Now the pages are filled with doodles (You drew a penis... great! Really showing your maturity there! ), horoscopes, top friends, give a beer, superpoke, moods, strippers, daily bible scriptures... AND OH GODS! THE MUSIC!

Please bring back the clean, simple, useful facebook we once loved! It has now just become the next MySpace... ugh...

If you agree with me, join us in the Shun Facebook Applications group.

Seriously, I was originally drawn to Facebook because of its clean simple interface and uniform design (as contrast to myspace's wtfexplosionofcrap). The applications are horrid, I am sick of "Use this Application" invites too. No, I don't want to be a zombie, no I don't care for your music or top friends, lemme alone. I liked it for parties, band groups (for bar invites) and such, nothing more...

Definitely agree with nihilistphx's post. At first Facebook was great because it was conveinient to keep up with others from my school, and my other friends who I no longer see or stay in touch with. But it is slowly going towards the way of MySpace. Only a matter of time before you'll be able to add a theme song to your page or customize it with a million crazy colors.

Most of the new applications they are adding to it are ridiculous as well. What's the point? Just keep the design simple imo...

I really like facebook. It took social networking to a new level. I'm going off to college this year so it is really helping me stay in touch with all of my friends. I hope it isn't a fad because, unlike myspace, facebook isn't crap. It's an actually useful tool.

I'm glad it isn't. One of the best things about Facebook is the lack of tacky and garish profiles.

Indeed, however the applications now created by other developers are ruining it into a Myspace-esque plethora of wank. What I liked about FB was its clean style with simple layout; when I click on my friends profile I don't want to be presented with numerous tacky addons about what he has eaten for breakfast. Keep it simple, keep it clean; this also has the bonus of look much more professional.

Facebook is just one of those things (ie. MySpace) that will be here one day and gone the next. Just a fad. I really don't see the big deal with it.
