A closer look at Windows Phone 7.8 start sceen - Video

Microsoft has promised to bring Windows Phone 7.8 to existing devices and with that will come a new start screen. In the video below, your host, BenThePCguy, takes a closer look at resizing live tiles to either small, medium, or large. It is a brief look but it does show how customizing your start screen will be an easy, yet familiar experience.

While we do not have a launch date yet for Windows Phone 7.8, Windows Phone 8 will be here in time for the holiday season. Knowing this, we would expect Windows Phone 7.8 to come out around the same time as Windows Phone 8.

Knowing that existing phones will get the new start screen should bring some comfort to those with existing devices. Is it a perfect solution? No, but is it necessary and better for the longevity of the ecosystem, certainly.

so how do i get to the apps list?

Same as always, scroll to the right. There was a bug in current builds where the icons wouldn't display which is why they didnt ever scroll over.

Still, where's the app drawer/list?

To the right of the start screen like it's always been. They just don't show it for some reason, makes me think that they're probably doing some UI changes there as well.

Ugly. There were documented design aesthetics behind the original start screen and they have been thrown out the window. Now your Windows Phone can look like an ugly mess. Great.

People wanted the right gutter removed, it was removed. If anything this is them listening to users which has always been a good thing around here. Maybe, and this is just a guess, you can make it look like 7.5 if you want.

No you can't. Spacing between tiles has been reduced and tiles are now so big they look downright ugly. Metro was all about how clean the OS looks and this looks anything but clean. Looks like someone puked all over your phone. Next thing you know tiles will have rounded corners and gradient and it'll be iOS and Android all over again.

I don't agree, even though the middle and large tile sizes are bigger now I think the fact it can be whatever size I want is worth the loss of the gutter. You now gain more tiles on the same size screen and by extension you see more info. Also tiles can now show you more data using the bigger tiles.

Ok. Microsoft! So your users are now gullible...will you try to at least sell the **** out of it so that Nokia doesn't go under while waiting for WP8 devices to be released!!!

And for all you naysayers, Android 2.3 is still in the wild while ICS has hardly been adopted by any major carriers on current dual cores+...so this whole fragmentation crap is null & void...

It looks like the interface Fisher Price would come up with if they made a touch OS for autistic kids.

Yeah, but Android looks like some WindowBlinds skin from 2005.

I'm not an Android fanboy, but can't you at least change themes on Android if you want? Anyway, from what I've seen of ICS, I'd take the default ICS look over Metro any day of the week.

Nah the icons are far too small for that. Plus the icons at least have some refinement and aren't a big monocolor square.

How delusional are you? That Fisher Price crap won't fly anymore. If anything iOS would be, with its rounded corners and shininess. I'd take clean swiss design any day over tacky skeumorphism.

Actually autistic children gravitate towards iPad like iron to a magnet. My mom teaches special ed children. She says its like magic when they see one of these things (iPad). Amazing how they can hardly respond to some things but put one those in front of them and they light up. I would imagine Win8 might have the same effect.

I think it looks very cool. One thing I would change is how tiles are resized. From what was shown on the video, tiles go from small, to large and then to medium.

For medium tiles, there should be an option to make it small or large.

It's not like you resize tiles every day. It's fine haha.

I just can't figure out why they didn't use a 3 across (using the current zoom size) vs 4 across. At that smaller size it loses something.

Who knows? THey didn't say anything other than it has IE10 and it's got great performance.

If this is all that will be included in 7.8 I will not be updating. With 7.5 we can have 4 rows of medium sized icons without having to scroll. With 7.8 if you want to keep your current layout with medium icons you will lose 1 row. To show the same amount of information you would need to make 2 rows of medium icons and 2 rows of small icons. I can see this working better in WP8 since the resolution will be higher but on WP7 it does not make sense to me.

In it's default position, you see the same amount of tiles on 7.5, unless you scroll up a bit.

Looking at WP8 on the Lumia 900, you can have 28 fully visible tiles on screen, plus 4 cropped tiles. So as well as being able to have a more functional starting point, you can group categories of apps much more tightly, meaning much less scrolling.

On the youtube thumbnail you can clearly see 2 rows of medium tiles, 2 rows of small tiles, and 1 row cropped. In 7.5 you can have 4 rows of medium tiles. They removed the space on the right so now the square medium tiles are wider and taller. This pushes the other tiles down.

I hope we get the option for more colors also like in WP8.

One thing about that, maybe i'm just thinking too much into it but if you go back to the Windows Phone summit keynote where they says WP8 will have more colors they also say "more colors and themes". Wonder what they mean by themes exactly, maybe more than just the two light and dark?

There's nothing else to say really. From everything that Microsoft's said thus far, that's pretty much all 7.8 is bringing to the table.

So then a more appropriate headline would be "Another look at Windows Phone 7.8 Start Screen" or "Ben Talks About Windows Phone 7.8 Start Screen"

This title made me think there would be some smaller fine details revealed.

How is that a closer look? It told us absolutely nothing new. If anything, it was less informative than previous videos.

Well, I guess he DID mention that being able to resize tiles was "pretty awesome". I guess that's... pretty awesome?
