Activision to release The Walking Dead FPS in 2013

The Walking Dead pop culture phenomenon that started out as a indie black-and-white comic book and later became a big hit TV show is getting a second video game based on the franchise. Today, Activision announced plans to release a first person shooter game based on the zombie-themed series.

IGN has some details about the game, which will have the player control the character of Daryl Dixon, which appears on the TV show but not in the comic book. Activision says that the game takes place before the events of the TV series, as he and his brother Merle try to make their way to Atlanta after the zombie apocalypse. The game will force players to conserve and manage their ammo, food and other supplies as they encounter the undead and other human characters.

The game is being developed by Terminal Reality, who last worked on the Star Wars Kinect game for LucasArts and Microsoft. The game will be released on the PC and other platforms in 2013.

The Walking Dead FPS is not connected to the current episodic Walking Dead adventure game that's being developed by Telltale Games. That game, which is in the middle of its five episode "season", more closely mirrors the comic book incarnation.
