Amazon launches unlimited cloud storage for $60 a year

Amazon has announced a restructuring of its Cloud Drive storage service, with two new plans - both of which offer unlimited storage at a pretty affordable price. The difference between the two plans - aside from cost, of course - is what each one allows you to store in Amazon's cloud.

Customers on the lookout for a low-cost backup solution for their photos might be best served by the Unlimited Photos Plan. For $11.99 a year, you can "store an infinite number of photos in Cloud Drive", and you'll also get an extra 5GB of storage thrown in for any other documents, videos and other files you might want to keep online.

The Unlimited Everything Plan is also available for those who need to store a bit more than just a few gigs of files and a lot of photos. This option costs $59.99 a year, but there are no limits on the types of files you can save to Amazon's servers.

Both plans are available now, and each includes a free three-month trial before you'll be asked to pay up.

$60 a year for unlimited storage isn't a bad deal at all - although if you're shopping around, it may be worth considering Microsoft's offering too. You can buy a Windows 8.1 tablet - like the HP Stream 7 for $79 - which comes with a one-year Office 365 Personal subscription (worth $69.99) and 1TB of OneDrive cloud storage.

1TB of space obviously isn't as impressive as unlimited storage - and you'd have to pay a bit more for the tablet than Amazon's $59.99 subscription - but if you can live with that, you'd still get a year of Office and a tablet out of it.

Decisions, decisions...
