'Apollo+' update coming to Windows Phone 8 in Q1 2013? [Update]

Windows Phone 8 got its official launch less than one month ago, and although it's been broadly well received by media and end-users alike, there are still a few gaps that need to be filled, and little niggles and glitches that need to be addressed. There have also been reports of some devices experiencing unusual issues, which Microsoft has confirmed it is investigating.

Of course, Microsoft remains tight-lipped about when it plans to roll out new features to its new-generation mobile OS, but that hasn't stopped speculation on what might be on the way.

Today, the rumour mill has churned out some interesting info via a source who's previously proven to be reliable; @Football4PDA leaked press images of the Windows Phone 8X by HTC over two months ago. A tweet from the same user claims to shine just a little bit of light on the first major Windows Phone 8 update:

The name 'Apollo+' is a reference to the codename - Apollo - that Microsoft applied to the development of Windows Phone 8. At this stage, there's nothing more to share with regards to what features, fixes and improvements might be a part of this update, but the suggested delivery window in early 2013 doesn't seem too fanciful.

Meanwhile, users of older-generation Windows Phones are still looking forward to the 7.8 update, which could arrive as soon as this week.

Update: The Verge suggests that features in Apollo+ may include fixes to allow always-on wifi connections, VPN support and unspecified "audio improvements", which all sounds like common sense to us. They additionally report that the new update will get its first official reveal by Microsoft at MWC in February.
