Apple & AT&T randomly cancelling iPhone 4 preorders

By Owen Williams, Hot! 44

AT&T and Apple aren't having a good week this week with pre-orders opening in disaster with systems failing and many customers unable to order. Now, customers' iPhone orders are being cancelled at random by Apple and AT&T, according to Engadget - even though some pre-orders started shipping late today.

Some customers are receiving this email from Apple:

"Dear Customer,

We were unable to complete the authorization process for your iPhone order. As a result, we had to cancel your iPhone order. To complete the purchase of your iPhone, please visit an Apple Retail Store or an AT&T company-owned retail store.

We apologize for this inconvenience.

Sincerely,

Apple Online Store Team"

And, over on the AT&T side of things, it doesn't get much rosier with some customers getting this email:

"Your iPhone order has been cancelled.

Your credit card has not been charged.
If you believe you have received this email in error, please return to the AT&T store where you placed your order.

Sincerely,

AT&T"

A reader of Gizmodo wrote in to say that: "My apple order got cancelled, ive been calling back and forth to Apple and ATT.. they both have no idea why it was cancelled, att says apple was out of stock and apple says att said i wasnt eligible.... they say alot of people are calling about it"

As noted above, and reflective of the comments and emails on Engadget and Gizmodo, a lot of people as of writing are quite upset and there still seems to be no official reasoning from either Apple or AT&T.

If you've been affected, or even if you're one of the lucky ones that are still getting their iPhone 4 - we'd love to hear from you in the comments of this article - include a screenshot if you can.

Well, 600,000 iPhones... EVO with its fake tripled numbers can't even come close to that.

I wouldn't doubt AT&T is full of it too, they sure did lie their asses off to me.

Yeah, I haven't seen Apple failing at a lot of things lately. AT&T, yes.
But I'm not saying it isn't Apple's fault here, I have no clue.

That would be one unhappy camper

I thought the order problems would be resolved by now.

Clearly not. Unfortunately. And this doesn't even mention the largest of the issues, that of displaying personal information during the order process to random other customers...

I've gotten an email from Apple.com that states my 32GB iPhone 4 has shipped. It gives a FedEx tracking number, and it shows a delivers by date of June 23rd...a day early. I got my order through at 4:00PM CST on day one.

Just order again, it's not like it's first come first served or anything

Actually, it is quite a bit like that. People who have pre-ordered early on the day pre-orders were allowed are supposed to get it in the day of release. Try pre-ordering now and you probably won't see it until mid-July.

I am going to my local Carphone Warehouse to get mine. I already confirmed with them that they'd honour my networks upgrade prices... I plan on being first in the queue...

I didn't want to risk pre-orders going wrong etc. with Apple, or the network directly. This is a major f**k up for poor old USA customers.

OHH you poor old USA customers, Its not like you live in Australia where were probably gonna get it two months in advance with an extra $400 on the price tag

Blackberry! The Slider is coming out later this summer and it's going to be great. Full touch screen AND a keyboard (like lots of Android phone, but this is a Blackberry).

I am also waiting for Windows Phone 7. The live tiles and hubs are a perfect departure from icon grid in iPhone and Android. With Android, if HTC, Samsung, LG, etc decided not to release an update, I am stuck on that version. With Windows Phone 7, I get updates directly from Microsoft.

Exactly. I am thinking the same thing. I REALLY can't wait for WP7, and think it's about time that updates are pushed out without involvement of the OEM...

What's funny though is no matter how much FAIL AT&T and Apple have trying to get this thing off the ground, it's still going to sell in record numbers. Happy people or not. The next wave of angry customers is how poorly the billing structure is now with data on AT&T.

Let's...remove unlimited data, and then produce a phone that encourages it's users to use a significant more amount of data each month. Let's throw video in there, better mail functionality, and more! By the way AT&T, it's cool if you strip away the unlimited data plans, really (i know for existing customers they can keep it, but what about new ones?).

Limited supply causes increased demand, just like similar items such as: Furby, Razor scooter, PS2 (through first year), Xbox 360 (through first year), Wii (through second year), Tickle Me Elmo, etc...

The list goes on and on. This is only the latest thing.

Wow, they STILL don't have android phones? That is pretty sad.

Sounds like AT&T is giving false information to Apple about eligibility. That, or these people ****ed something up (like giving the wrong four digits on the end of their SSN) and are trying to blame Apple/AT&T for their mishap.

necrosis Reply

AT&T really dropped the ball on this. Yes, AT&T, and *ONLY* AT&T is to blame here. The only thing you can really blame Apple for is not making enough. AT&T's system was completely unable to meet the demand they knew damned well was coming. Not to mention word spreading around they launched a new system days before the 15th UNTESTED.

I wish Sprint or T-Mobile had better coverage; I'd switch in a minute. ATT and Verizon do little to compete because they don't have to.

I bet these orders are already reflected in the 600,000 orders reported.

is it going to cancel that news and say it is only 400,000 orders, 200,000 cancelled?

I bet.
