Apple blocks cheaper UK iPod sales

Apple is threatening legal action against 11 UK e-tailers unless they stop selling iPods imported from outside the UK. The computer giant has complained to a number of well-known online retailers which were buying iPods in the US – where they sell for £15 less than the UK– and then selling them at a knocked-down price to customers in Blighty.

The undertakings issued by London law firm Bird & Bird and seen by The Register, demand e-tailers stop selling what it described as "Grey iPods" anywhere in Europe.

Its not that bad, iPhone in US: $399, in Ireland: €399, difference? €150 or $225

Wow. That's either pretty shameless price gouging or Apple hasn't been paying attention to the currency market.

Most likely both....

Even though I am a fanboy of Apple, I realized that they don't really look at the value of the money in the countries where they establish themselves. For example, in Canada, even the brand new imac from this morning is a hundred bucks more. Small ripoff, yeah.

Why are they doing this?

BTW: Do you guys remember the overwhelming reception Steve Jobs got when he unveiled the iPhone in America compared with the boos and groans he got when he did the press unveiling in the UK. I guess British people are not so easily impressed by over priced mash-ups of everyday technology as the Yanks are.

Yes, the British are not as easily impressed as Americans, do you remember David Blain sitting in a glass box in London, unlike in the US, in London he just get pelted with stones for being a dumbass

And Paintballed! Good times!

Whats illegal about importing products from another country? Just because apple charge us such a high price that its £15 cheaper after shipping/import tax from the US doesn't mean its illegal to import goods?

Sadly I remember Sony doing this and winning in court, so clearly our legal system doesn't care for consumers as much

How can this be illegal? They're paying for the products :S

Like others are saying, stop ripping off the UKers. I never understood why everything was so much more expensive there?

they arent grey imports, they are genuine. If they can sell them for £15 cheaper AFTER paying import taxes and shipping then apple must be seriously inflating the UK prices.

We have had enough apple, stop treating the UK like 2nd class citizens!
