Apple CEO Tim Cook joins Twitter and sends first tweet

In somewhat surprising move, Apple's CEO Tim Cook has randomly signed up for Twitter on the launch day of the iPhone 5c and 5s. His handle is @tim_cook and his follower count is accumulating as you read this.

So far he has sent but a single tweet:

Cook also got the blue check mark from Twitter, verifying his identity. CNBC has also confirmed that it is in fact Tim Cook. "Apple tells @CNBC that even though Cook isn't verified, this is a legitimate account,". Phil Schiller, senior vice president of marketing at Apple, follows Cook as well; Schiller has had a Twitter for almost five years now.

It seems employees at Apple are warming up to the idea of being a bit more public lately. Steve Jobs never expressed interest in joining any social networks, choosing to keep his life private. Maybe Cook has some things on his mind he wants to share.

So, Tim invented Tweeting now. Nice work.

You got a link to back that up? I saw no /s so assume it's real

Yahoo's CEO, Marissa Mayer has been getting some notoriety of late because of her use of twitter. Maybe this is just a case of, "Monkey see, monkey do."

Exactly this. And I can tell him and show him how ugly I think iOS7 looks on an iPad3 to his face. Not that I think he would honestly give 2 hoots (trying to refrain from bad language here kids) about my thoughts.

How did he manage to join Twitter after so long and get the username @tim_cook and get verified so damn fast?! I bet there is a certain "Tim Cook" somewhere who was given a nice pay off to give up his username - either that or Twitter banned him and deleted his account for some vague reason!

Amazing how quickly he got that name and got verified. I'm sure they do what they do, not for happy customers, but the colour of their money

Tim fail cook looks like an old goof, with an image to keep.

He looks like a lady that chatted with me whilst gardening this week. She was 70. Men supposedly age better than women; this guy has lots of hormones or something.

However, he looks much cleaner than Baldy Ballmer!

that argument can truly be applied everywhere, huh? if you use twitter, you don't innovate. cool. do you apply it to microsoft peeps on twitter too? what about @nasa?

don't think it's a good idea. why do you want to make yourself become more like a celebrity. instead make it like you give a crap about the people who don't like your product such as those fandroid.

It's unlikely you've ever going to change strongly negative opinions towards a brand and product - I can't imagine anyone who is a diehard Android, or Windows Phone user warming to Apple regardless of what they do. There are a hell of a lot of anti-Apple folks on this forum and it's pretty clear they'd never even look at an Apple product.

This is NeoWin.net. Go to Apple sites if you need acceptance.

I've been on this site for over 12 years - you've been here over year. I think I know what NeoWin is all about thanks.

1. Guy supposedly lacks interactions with the community.
2. Guy joins social network.
3. "Instead make it like you give a crap"

The concept of social networks -- do you get it?

Please let me hear how a guy can communicate better via the Internet today than via a social network. Do you expect him to join Neowin?

Why is that any achievement? My relatives were on the Mayflower; I don't show up on thanksgiving looking for likes. Face it, this CEO is a bust.

You don't join Twitter now and get the name @tim_cook...

He must have been looking in the cash registers from that tweet ;-)

Is it just me or does Tim Cook look like a guy in drag going for the old lady look!

He reminds me of the guy on those eHarmony commercials.
