Apple iPad announced, starting price of $499 - shipping in 60 days

Today, Apple's CEO Steve Jobs took to the stage to introduce a new device named the Apple iPad.

Jobs began by revealing that Apple has reached 250 million iPod sales to date. He then revealed that "Apple is the largest mobile devices business in the world today." Moving on throughout Jobs speech he questioned whether there is room for a third category device in-between a laptop or a smart-phone. Jobs then mocked competitors for investing in netbooks and immediately revealed the iPad.

Jobs went on to demonstrate several features including browsing, Photos and built-in slideshows. The iTunes store is also built in and the usual suspects of a mail, contacts and calendar applications are available. Jobs also demonstrated the maps application and its location features.

YouTube HD support is also included and Jobs demonstrated various videos during his keynote. After the video demonstrations Jobs moved onto the specifications:

  • 0.5" thin
  • Weighs 1.5 pounds
  • 9.7" IPS display
  • 1GHz Apple A4 processor
  • 16, 32, or 64GB of flash storage
  • 802.11n, WiFi, and Bluetooth 2.1
  • 10 hours battery life

Various applications were demonstrated on the new iPad, some run at full resolution with slight pixelation whilst others run at their native resolution which seems far from ideal. A New York Times application was also demonstrated briefly that syncs between the iPhone app and includes in-line video clips.

Later in his speech Jobs priced up data plans for the iPad over 3G, AT&T will be offering the following:

  • 250MB monthly data limit for $14.99 - No contract
  • Unlimited data for $29.99 - No contract

International data plans will be revealed in June.

The iPad will be available in two months time for the WiFi only version and three months time for the WiFi and 3G version. Pricing of the devices will be:

  • 16GB WiFi only $499, WiFi + 3G $629
  • 32GB WiFi only $599, WiFi + 3G $729
  • 64GB WiFi only $699, WiFi + 3G $829

Apple also announced a case and keyboard dock accessory for "when you really need to do a lot of typing" said Jobs.

News of the announcement saw Apple's (AAPL) stock drop over 1% initially and later recovered and rose 1%.

It's oleophobic, so it's actually quite smudge-resistant. My iPhone 3GS barely smudges, and any smudges are pretty easily wiped off.

I know huh...it's SOOOO hard to get out a lint free cloth and wipe the face...

This piece of crap is completely out of reality.
Apple IS out of reality. Overrated, overpriced, just useless luxury products.
This "device" is no different. Useless.

Apparently Apple just doesn't want people to write their own applications anymore. I look for OSX to be app-locked soon so you can only run things approved by Apple and purchased through iTunes. :(

Join the developer program and write your own apps. It doesn't necessarily have to be on the App Store for you and other developers to be able to use it.

I agree that the closed model is a little strict, but it's not impossible to have fun.

There's a fee for that, too, and you still can't distribute your own apps unless the target device is hacked.

They always do. Apple usually ends up down after a product announcement, and then always rebounds in a huge way. Kinda funny to watch the rollercoaster.

Actually there's one scenario I can think of where the iPad would be good to have.

That's if you are a Mac user and you want to do review/edit documents on a plane. There's already options to do this for Windows (Tablet PCs, Sony P series, etc.) but if you don't want to go the Hackintosh route then this could be a winner.

(That is assuming that you can actually edit documents on the thing!)

They developed iWork for it, so yep, you can. Hell, you can even present from it.

We all know, for the various reasons already listed, that this product should be a complete failure. And if it were made by any other company it would be. However, I am curious to see just how well it does in sales. I think it's up the in air, it can go either way, and it's success will show just how powerful the allure of the Apple brand really is.

I'm intrigued but not completely convinced just yet. It would be used for most occasions where a laptop is just over kill such as basic web browsing and emails. One of the biggest uses would be as an e-book reader. However from what I understand e-books have specially designed screens to reduce eye strain. Will this be the case with the Ipad?

Nope, it won't be a proper ebook reader.

I know this is only a software issue, but I have a beef with the ebook reader on this thing. It requires that you drag your finger across the screen to flip the page. I am reading a book that is over 1400 pages right now. Do I really want to do that action that many times for one book? I generally read a normal size book every 1.5 days at work (security). I do not want to do that stupid action that much. With any of the ebook readers and with any netbook you can just hit an arrow button to change page. Way simpler, way easier, way less strain.

The Sony eReader (PRS-600) has buttons at the bottom for page turning in addition to being able to wipe your finger across the screen.

I'm sorry, but don't actual, physical books work the exact same way? I'm not saying that a button wouldn't be a nice convenience, but jeez, talk about splitting hairs.

Elliott said,

1: I usually don't read physical books
2: No, there's cheats to flipping pages in a book. You can do the thumb letting out one page at a time trick, the close the book trick, the slide your thumb inward to crumple and move the page trick.
3: My point was not comparing reading a real book to this anyways, it was comparing the ipad way to every other device that can read ebooks. There's a million ways to hit a button, there's really only 2 ways I can think of of moving your finger right to left across a screen.

I was actually interested in this until I saw that movie. What kind of silly "commercial" is that? I barely managed to see the whole thing.

There has been talk that this will have a camera/video chat for the end product. CNN and a few news sources asked this question in a video I recall watching and some tech. experts believe that it will have a camera and video. Verdict still out on that one.

I can understand no Flash player as they are trying to move to the H264 standards and they will probably adotp silverlight at some point. The OS doesn't seem to run Silverlight at the current moment but perhaps 3.2 or 4.0 will? It is bring ported for Mac now so it will be interesting. Silverlight has a market and it will grow.

I can see this device really compete in against the Kindle and e-books market. If I were sitting in bed and wanted to read emails, read a book or watch a video this device would be a good choice and I think that is what Apple is trying to achieve. They know that users watch videos and read emails while sitting on the couch or in bed. By creating a larger experience for this they will capture the potential Kindle buyer and move towards this device instead. For a few hundred more(without the 3G - which Kindle does not have) they will get a more useable device.

I can understand why they didn't put OSX in this machine. It would eat up too much space in memory, no quick boot times and too much emphasis on mouse movements and keyboarding. The choice to use OS 3.2 is a smart move on them. Not for everyone else as I think we have been tuned to believe a Slate Device as the evolutionary step for the PC.

It would be more than DUMB to have a large device to have phone capabilities. They aren't even pushing 3G as this device is more of a home entertainment/e-book reading device than anything else. I am sure I will start seeing these at Starbucks in replacement of the Mac users who just read emails and surf the internet on the Macs. I frequent a large starbucks and its funny to see the MAC users surf and read emails while the PC users are using Excel and doing business work. This is definately more the rule than the exception at this location.

I think they will sell very well due to the popularity of Apple products and the emergence of e-books and Kindle. They put themselves into a good E-Book niche at this moment and with the other functionality such as calendars, emails and web browsing it only makes it that much better for the potential Kindle/E-book reader buyers.

I would love the see the MS Courier a reality by end of year!

wow I can't quite belive the new product from apple I supose the invoation they trying to achiveve is all based on touch capabilities and iphone/mac/ipod all into onto portball system, may I say that this product is for moderate usasage such as listening to music or watch videos or even reading a book and not for heavy usage such as u can with mac pro or imacs saying that it could of done with a bit more software inplementation such as snow leopard ox I think it would fit it better as the current look looks quite squashed in, I belive the price for the device its quite allot for the amount of features its got and memory capabalities.

I think that this product will take his time to reach the same level of (love) as it was for iphone and mac, none the less I am sure people out there will like to have this product that will be a complement to the iphone and mac, something to sit in the sofa and wacth a video or read an email without the need of having a heavy dutie mac or laptop on top of you, there is good and bad on this product but apple has allays a way or tuning a bad aspired or less focus product into a great achievement

I bought an HP Touchsmart 300 for $1000 CDN to use as my sofa PC. Sure it lacks portability, but for roughly the same price I get a ton of features including a webcam, USB ports, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and TV Tuner.

Looks and runs exactly like a iPhone/iPod touch, and I thought it will run OSX Snow leopard..... I'm disappointed

Wow...Apple....truly an epic fail After all the hype and speculation.....this thing? It's an oversized iPod Touch....Really? This is VERY disappointing :(

Apple definately left the door open for Microsoft on this one. If a device even half as good as the "Courier" concept is released it'll make this thing look like a total joke...

For all that hype, this was a pretty underwhelming announcement by Apple. From a design standpoint, I fail to see how this is "magical" as Steve Jobs is touting it. As said many times already, it's basically a bigger iPod Touch/iPhone. It's pretty disappointing that Steve Jobs would brush off the netbook platform even though it's selling very well right now. Yeah they're not "powerful", but they're designed more for portability and basic computing in mind not as a power machine. It just sounded really arrogant on Job's part.

It's pretty disappointing that there's no flash or multitasking support, and I hope it's addressed in a future update, especially due to the number of websites that use flash. I will admit, the iBooks application looks pretty nice though, and I like how Apple gave credit for Amazon for their kindle.

Personally, I would of been more impressed if it had a tablet version of OS X, and the device had more future in it like a built in camera for example. I guess we'll have to wait and see how Apple updates the iPad overtime. At least the price was fairly reasonable though

What on earth is the point of having a tablet that doesn't support handwriting? The key to using a tablet is that you can hold it with one hand while writing with the other. The software then converts your handwriting to text. Even Microsoft's twelve year old Windows Tablet Edition does that - in over 100 languages.

This is very, very disappointing.

We are obviously all Windows 7 fans around here...
Forget for a second the unexpected disappointment around the little useless device they announced today and think about what Jobs said at the beginning of the event about netbooks.
The iPad comes to fill up the empty spot the Mac fanboys had between the smallest MacBook and the iPhone, it is nothing more than an Apple Netbook that is not good enough to run the full OS.
So let them live happy giving all their disposable income to Mr. Jobs.. This is the perfect excuse PC makers needed to unbox their tablet lines, in a year from now the PC versions will be far better than this one.

It's a great device for a pretty large segment of the population ... those looking for a way to read magazines and books, those who want to casually surf the web or e-mail while sitting on the couch ... as an entertainment device, etc.

The name is a bit unfortunate though, but I knew I had seen it before somewhere ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YFNQE_TzQNI

If you want a competing tablet that will actually do ****, look into the HP Slate. I'm not sure on the pricing yet, but if it's competitively priced...the iPad is a dead duck.

The whole argument for the lack of flash thus far is that html5 is moving to take out Adobe Flash. The problem is that Flash is still the predominant way people get their multimedia fix online, so there's zero reason to exclude it. Apple cannot claim that the iPad is the ultimate web surfing gadget when most people aren't going to be able to view some sites.

If HP was smart, they go ahead and announce the pricing of the HP Slate.

Well, just like the Newton, this is ahead of its time, and no one understands the need for it.

It will however spark a bunch of copycat devices from other vendors, and Microsoft will rip all the good ideas out of this and throw it into a less usable design in 5 or 6 years time.

By then the market will accept and be clamoring it.

Dude, the rest of the world has been using far superior slates for many many years already, and even Microsoft's vanilla tablet PCs on the market a couple of years ago did more than the iPad does now, for less money. Not to mention all the startups (and a couple of large OEMs) at and before CES who demoed products that make the iPad look like a crippled child's toy.

Newton was ahead of its time, the iPad is about 10 years too late.

Wow. Uhm...you know Apple isn't the first to create a tablet device do you? Tablets that can do much, much more than this. To say the iPad is ahead of it's time is...well...let's just say uninformed to say the least.

Oh, did you ever see the courier videos? If that device becomes reality, it would kill the iPad in terms of usage goals and innovation.

I guess its ok...does a few things better/nicer than my Nokia N800 and the previous 770 which came out in 2005. Overall though, it seems just like an evolution of an internet tablet...nothing really new or revolutionary.

i can see people saying "OMG COOL DIGITAL PHOTO FRAME DUDE"

cue apple fanboy entering "explanation" mode and looking like even more of a loser for spending a small fortune on this itouch-on-steroids device.

for what it is, its cool... however

useful..no.
an iphone would make more sense to me, unless you want the bigger screen. but a laptop can do everything this thing can, and more. with more power, and storage. then just have an iphone in your back pocket. hey wait, i have both of those already.

I don't know what freaked me out more the product and name or the promotional video with the overly joyed people, smiles on their faces looking as if they've had constipation for about a month and have finally released it.

Which begs the question.. Why over hype a product so much that you have to ask the 'actors' to grin that much they begin to look like they'd fit in well in a chucky movie?

I was really hoping for a near-borderless device, like all the mockups showed. Yes the price is fairly reasonable, but this huge bezel looks nasty. There is no reason for a huge border all the way around, you hold it in your hand, or rest it on a table, you don't grip the sides while you're using it. they wasted alot of space. I'll hold my final judgement till I see one in person, but that bezel is a definately kill so far. Guess my money will stay in my pocket that much longer while I wait for v2 to come out.

I'm a little underwhelmed. It's nice and I could make a space for it in my life - but it's a space that doesn't NEED to be made, and not at such a price.

If it's good for reading ebooks, I might look into it. It still feels kind of overpriced though.

Have you ever tried to read a book for longer than 2 hours on a computer screen? kindle still wins.. Even Microsoft knows they cannot sell their Courier as an ebook reader

And I thought the HP Slate was disappointing...

The iPad is massively underwhelming even for someone who never expected it to have anything new in the first place. We've had cheaper and better offerings for years already, it's not even novel software-wise. This would have been a good competition to Microsoft's initial tablet PC offerings, but it's about 10 years too late. By the time it matures enough to compete with the technology we've all been using all these years the Courier would probably already be released.

This is probably the most pathetic product Apple's ever released. Everything prior to that at the very least offers something premium for a niche market, if not innovate the entire ecosystem like several of their products have done. Even the Newton was at least advanced for the time. But now this pos? wtf Apple? Especially so soon after HP announced a marginally better offering that's almost certainly going to be cheaper and definitely will be released sooner. What happened to "the most important thing" Steve has ever done??

Ok so this is the most useless product I have ever seen in my life. Who would buy this and for what?

An iPod can be used to listen music.
An iPhone gives you a phone, an iPod, a gaming device all in one.
A Macbook Air gives you a thin and light laptop.
The iPad gives you, a large browser?

Seriously can you imagine someone pulling out of her/his purse/briefcase a big screen then playing on it like a 5 yr old kid that gets one of those doodling pads? How retard is that.

The only ppl who will buy this are reviewers, Apple fans who like to have all the latest Apple crap(no matter how useless they are) or rich kids trying to show off.

so Apple released another Slate to the Slate market, except Apple's can only do half of what other Slates can do. I smell FAIL on the iPad.

iDon't like it, because for me is iFail.

It's look giant iPhone with few iPhone OS modifications, and thats all.

It's too big for phone and less practise than normal net/notebook.

This fails in a lot of key ways, I don't think Jobs met his own criteria to create a platform that was between a smart phone and a laptop. Netbooks already did that imo. Also most regular laptops are fairly cheap nowadays anyway, we don't need a new category of computing--at least not what Apple came up with. If it had multi-tasking and full OS X with elements of the iphone OS it would have been more convincing. There was too much phone and not enough laptop blending for a hybrid device.

looks like crap IMO. the price is god awful. i don' think this will sell well at all even with the fanboys. can't we make an android based netbook or tablet, now that would be interesting!

This is awesome! I will add this to my MacBook/iPhone 3GS collection. My iPhone never leaves my hand. For those of u who think the iPhone ain't nothin special, think again. It's the BEST phone ever made, and does absolutely everything (I) need it to except flash.

What an absolute waste of money. Starting from the developers who designed it right down to the manufacturing of this product. What a horrible, horrible idea. Chances are they had no intentions to create a tablet and only made this because of the rumors of a tablet. Too bad some moron at the company most likely stood up in a meeting and said "I HAVE AN IDEA!"

Here's an idea, fire him/her.

This hadn't occurred to me yet, but IPS display? Isn't that regular LCD? Is it at least LED backlit?

Why does Apple hate AMOLED?

It is LED backlit - IPS is one best for viewing angles. They don't hate AMOLED - they just know adding it would push the price up by $400 odd

At that price anyone is better off with a netbook.

Didn't Apple learn anything from the MacBook Air? Ahh well, at least the hype is over and everyone can return to normal.

This is dying for some Rockbox-style OS alternatives. Strip off iPhone OS and put some specialized version of Linux on there, eh?

This is simply for people who are not real computer users. My mom would benefit from this way more than anyone else I can think of, and even for her the novelty would wear off incredibly fast I would have to imagine, not even counting how it would be incredibly awkward for her to use seriously for any extended amount of time.

My biggest issue with Apple is their arrogance, and keep in mind I have been and still continue to use Apple computers now for the past 10 years, and the first 4 or 5 years I used nothing but Apple computers. But to say this is "magical," and to pretend like it is something new and unique when it just simply is an extension and an builds on everything that is already out there, well that just offends me terribly.

If it had voice recognition, a camera that recognized gestures like a Natal from MS, then perhaps it would be magical. As it stands now, it is an over-sized iPod, capable of nothing more than the net-books Steve Jobs had to attach to make their device seem oh so special.

Me being a graphic designer, I was so into the idea of an "Apple Tablet," as to me a tablet meant something I could sit down with Photoshop and use a Stylus on the screen just as I do with my Wacom tablet. Truly disappointing as again this is nothing more than a large iPod touch.

I would consider getting one once it is priced the same as the iPod, until then truly is a pass on all counts.

I could literally keep going on and on, but I will end with saying I truly hope this fails simply for the fact that perhaps it will force Apple to actually try and create something magical, and not just try to build off the popularity of the iPhone / iPod.

Well being a huge gamer, I was extremely disappointed by the games on the iPod currently. And if the big advancement in gaming will be features like being able to click on the "rearview mirror to see behind you" as has been touted for the Need For Speed game, then yeah, I am not seeing this taking over gaming anytime soon. Sure, the casual games market will thrive as it has with the iPod/Phone, but as far as what I would personally call "real" games, gonna have to establish a large install base before publishers really look at it seriously for games, until then just gonna be a bunch of crap like what is on the iPod now. This is of course my opinion, but I am not a huge fan of gaming on the i's at all.

Now would be the perfect time for MS to announce the Courier...especially at or below this P.O.S. The courier at least has a purpose.

Likewise - and those hilarious jokes about the name similar to the "Wii" they never get old, do they? DO THEY??

how the hell is it ugly. its pretty much featureless and clean and well built.

Storage is an issue and I won't buy one till it is clearer if it can talk to network devices e.t.c

So am I supposed to hold this upright for an hour and a half as I watch a movie? Am I supposed to type with one hand as I hold it with the other? And don't tell me about the stand and keyboard, if I have to lug those around as well, why not just get a netbook. I fail to see any advantages of this over a netbook.

Is it so difficult to imagine people being willing to lug snap-on accessories? They're already buying snap-on backup power for their iPhones. The argument will go something like... "If you really want it to stand up, just buy the snap-on! God, isn't it thin enough for you?"

This is exactly what I don't get. The Netbook seems to win at everything in comparison to this, PLUS they are cheaper and run a full OS, with a keyboard built in, which conveniently protects the screen when not in use. Not to mention a netbook has USB, a card reader, video output, audio input and output, wired networking...

Have you every used a netbook though? They have cramped keyboards and mice (with equally cramped buttons) which make them a frustration to use. Then again, I guess that goes pretty well with Windows.

I'm not saying this wouldn't be hard to hold for a long time though. It's probably best to judge it when you've used it.

Umm, actually I have owned my MSI Wind since June or July (forget which) and I love it. Yes, the keys are a TINY bit more cramped, but I got used to it pretty quick, as did my girlfriend, who complained like crazy about the cramped keys for the first week. I use my Wind every single day for hours at a time. I do all my tech work with it, all my accounting, and when I'm at my security job, I watch shows and movies, and read any file format of ebook I desire. Not only that but I use Microsoft Streets and Trips with it when I go travelling, which is the best gps app out there IMHO.

forgot to comment about the touchpad on it. Normally I hate touchpads, but the wind's is by far the best I've come across. Still, for very mouse intensive stuff I do still have USB ports so I can actually plug in a mouse...

My point was if I have to carry the snap on accessories with me all or most of the time, why not just have the accessories built on to the device. Also, since we are talking about a device you carry in a bag and not in your pocket, saving fractions of an inch in thickness is more about aesthetics than convenience.

They do usually have cramped keyboards. But I think you would adjust faster to a cramped REAL keyboard than a less cramped TOUCH keyboard (which you type with one hand on).

Just what I expected from Apple. The iPad doesn't convince me. It just isn't 'magical'.

The prices don't surprise me, either.

Of course, it will most probably sell.

I don't get this obsession with the archaic file manager. Not once I have I needed one on my iPhone. And with Apple making them almost obsolete with the way most of their apps handle files (iTunes, iPhoto), why do I need one again? Just for the 20MB of docs I have? That's what the cloud's for.

You can hook it up to your computer and drop files on and off of it for apps on the device to use.

Like they could've made it a swiveling mini Macbook Air so it can offer the full MacOS experience with the option to convert to a tablet. Tablet computing really does NOT depend that much on thinness for success. If anything, you want something that's *going to be thrown around a bit* to feel durable.

I could not agree more. The ipad reminds me of something like "my first computer", a child's toy machine with single tasking.

Thing is this isn't aimed at regular "computer" users is it - its a consumer device simple as. Also the only ones ever calling it a tablet were press and ill informed users. Apple haven't called it a tablet, thankfully they want to avoid the tablet name I'd guess after the disasters that have come before it.

I'm willing to give it a chance as I can see some excellent apps coming out for it and I like the idea of gaming with it. For me I just use my laptop to browse the net, use twitter apps, facebook etc 90% of the time, so heck even for me I can see I'd make use of it at home.

Obviously people here are going to dislike it, if Apple cured cancer people here would still complain.

It's made for the coffee table. It's a consumption device not one used primarily for creating (although apps for that will flow I imagine). I really see absolutely no need for full OS X on this device now that I use my iPhone 90% of the time.

It could of been so much much more. I don't see the need to buy this since I have an iPhone. It does not offer me anything more than I get with my iPhone. I know it is for the coffee table/living room. But my iPhone is portable. If I want to check facebook or twitter I have apps for that. If I want to check the web I use my iPhone for it also.
Lack of multi tasking is worrying.

I'm sorry, but do you really video chat that often or is it just for the "oh, that's cool" factor? Besides I have like 3 webcams pointing at me right now and I've used 1 of them like 5 times over 4 years.

Bet it reacts to the digestive tract in the same way.

The only question I have now is: Will it Blend?????

This is far worse than its Windows counterparts. At least the Windows ones come with more features and usability.

I don't really see the appeal for these kind of devices when we already have Netbooks (I prefer a thin and small full-fledged notebook, though) and the smart phone of your preference.

Perhaps for use at home as an universal remote or something to keep an eye on your network/devices or email/social sites. But I don't see them selling well.

It's not locked to at&t though. If you can get a T-Mobile micro sim you're set. And of course, it'll be available internationally "soon." Oh, it's not on a contract either. Pay as you go.

I didn't say it was locked, did I? I said they have gone back to AT&T. The deal isn't for T-Mobile, regardless of whether or not you can put it on T-Mobile's network. I don't much care about T-Mobile's network either. I want Verizon.

iPad functionality is what?

- you can't use it on your desk (view angle)
- you can't write with 10 fingers (writing on your knees isn't good option)
- no USB or card reader
- no mouse (try using touchscreen at this size for few hours of work)
- no web cam
- expensive keyboard dock (yes it will be expensive!)

Little joke (the through)
Apple guy: Dude did you see the new Ipad it rocks
PC guy: No I didn't. Why is it so god?
Apple guy: Well ammmm it has an apple logo on it and ammmm has apple os on it
PC guy: Witch os? The new OSX?
Apple guy: No apple said that OSX is not worthy for Ipad so they changed iphone os for Ipad
PC guy: Isn't that a downgrade?
Apple guy: No it's not. Apple knows the best what I want and if they say it won't support flash well then I don't need it
PC guy: It doesn't support flash damn even the hello kitty phone support it
Apple guy: You are just jealous you will see how good it is when I will buy it

A few days latter

PC guy: So how is the Ipad
Apple guy: **** you I didn't know that most web sites use flash and now it is used as photo viewer

- Apple's case (and I'm sure others will mimic it for a lower price) for the iPad allows you to set it up at different viewing angles ideal for either watching a movie or typing.
- You might be able to manage 10 fingers on this if you just get used to it. You sure as hell can't type on most netbooks with 10 fingers.
- Yes, it does have USB. It's called the dock connector. It also has Bluetooth and WiFi.
- This is the first I've heard that accurate touchscreens are bad
- Will concede with you on this point. Not that I would've ever used it.
- You can use a bluetooth keyboard (and yes, Apple says you can; it's not like the iPhone). Problem solved!

Oh, and I wasn't aware most websites used Flash for anything important. Oh, right, they don't. I guess iPad users will miss out on the crappy Flash flyswatter ads.

1: Will view fine on a desk, it's a IPS screen which has great viewing angles.
2: So you know this without using one? I write with ten fingers on my laptop on my knees, I can't so much on a netbook, but thats usually due to bad design.
3: It has USB connector, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi
4: I've used decent touchscreens for hours, this won't be a problem at all. No more so than fiddling with a trackpad etc either.
5: No webcam is no loss to me, I never use one, I can agree it would be a good option for some, but I'd rather there was no option than it had to have one and pay more
6: You can use a bluetooth keyboard, they said it during the speech, so again a mute point.

Ok, you didn't understood me.

If I buy iPad how can I use it on a desk (flat surface)? Are you sure you can lean your head over the desk for a time? Again, you can't use ten fingers because you must hold it with the other hand.

Where did you see USB connector? Nobody saw it or mention it.

http://www.apple.com/ipad/specs/#ipad-case. Not sure about the cost, but again, the iPad has an IPS screen which makes it very readable from quite a few angles.

Antraxek said,

The dock connector is just a modified USB connector with extra pins for analog audio/video and some other features.

Antraxek said,

Don't need a keyboard dock. Just need a Bluetooth keyboard if you wanna do serious typing on it. The case to prop it up will probably be copied by other vendors for a very low price. Hell, you could probably just make your own little cardboard doohicky to prop it up if you're being frugal about it.

Antraxek said,

Then get the WiFi only version? Apple will only sell the 3G version in the US for now until they can get deals like they got from AT&T in other countries.

but i see alot of HP Slate wins. ill leave this here ->http://www.pcworld.com/article/186172/why_the_microsofthp_tablet_is_a_big_disappointment.html

the HP Slate is a Microsoft Kindle, not Windows 7 OS, its just a book reader

It can be used as a book reader...but its has full Windows 7 OS..where you can browse, watch pics, videos etc..

the HP slate im assuming is using an Atom processor, same as in the netbooks, which would use the same Crippled Windows 7 Netbook Edition. i dont see a diffrence.

and still no price on the HP Slate. if the Slate would be equal +/- $200 to a Netbook then yes it would win hands down, but because of the Form Factor ALONE, not to mention the history of Slate/Convertable devices, your looking at close to 2K.

the iPad is a big iPod, apple knows this, why they priced it how they did, lif it was anything close to 1K, doubtfull even the diehards would get it

right because it uses an actual OS, not a crippled version

I do see a difference, the fact is the HP Slate might have an Atom processor but at least it runs a fully fledged OS not some embedded crap.

There is no "Windows 7 Netbook Edition", the HP Slate will be running Windows 7 Home Premium, as Starter and Home Basic lack Multi-Touch support.

i'm watching this video now and i must say it does look fun to use.. no revolutionary product, it doesn't fly you to space. but to be sat chilling or whatever and to just be able to pick this up n check emails or browser (on a bigger screen) it looks perfect. great to have around the house or to keep in a brief case.

I thought we were gonna get a new iPhone OS though... my Smart Playlists bug is still left unfixed ... :(

Not a full new release until the next iPhone comes out june/july I'd doubt. Though I'd expect the ebooks to come into iPhone OS 3.2 on 3G/3GS etc

Have a PDF reader/writer on it, ability to have updating background apps (to download updates) and a car mount, then I'll buy three for the company I work at - we can use them to replace the clipboard. Oh, and have the ability for people to write on it.

The iToiletPad.

Great for the bathroom!

Really, I see no need for this middle ground. But I hope it is a slow burner like the iPhone. That was pretty but shallow when it came out to.

In U.K terms this will probably translate in to a price of £400-£499. High price for such a device. When an iPhone or iPod touch can more less do same things for the same price.
There does not seem to be big enough leap from the iPhone/iPod touch to justify getting an iPad, well at least if you already own an touch or phone. I like it and think it is good. But it doesn't offer me anything more than my iPhone. Which I always have with me. If I'm sitting downstairs I can use my phone to surf the web. So the 75m people who own iPod touches/iPhones would be stupid to buy this.

New Technology its about innovation, accessibility, ideas that revolution the market of gadgets, not just about how good looking its this application on a bigger screen. Making an analogy, this is just an smaller CRT TV with nothing up to date to offer.

I think the exact wording was something along the lines of "more ways for applications to run in the background" which was interpreted as multitasking, but could be anything.

Will it do anything for the prices of iPhones? They're over $600 here in Canada. If the iMaxiPad is less expensive for a lot more, than what's it gonna do for the phone?

i am just happy its not on Verizon! :P but yeah this will sell just cause its apple.. might be like how the iPod started out :)

I'm pretty sure software devs will be clawing at each other to create a decent drawing application for this thing first. I'm just going to hold off on buying and see what develops. lol

- suprised there's no camera.

- I think it should've had some grey case matching rubber feet like the laptops...otherwise it will scratch up over time.

- would've been great if they made 2 versions with an OSX version so you can run photoshop with a plug in stylus for drawing etc....damn that would kick ass in art classes...or sketching in a park etc...

There are VNC and RDP apps for the iPhone, so I'm sure they'll work on the iPad. The Cisco IPSec VPN support + RDP on my iPhone is invaluable for me at my job.

I believe they would say that $380 was too expensive for the iPod Touch. Personally, I am in no rush for this device. I'll wait for the price drop. I wouldn't settle for less than the 64GB 3G model, and I fear that's just a bit too pricey for what it is. iWork on the device would be a great selling point for me, though.

I think the entire concept is all wrong. The whole deal about tablet computers altogether. Am I supposed to carry a handbag with this one on the street or what? There's a reason the iPhone has its form factor, or any mobile phone for that matter. And if you don't care for carrying it - what's the point in keeping it so small?

If I need a bag for it, I can just as well carry a much more powerful 13-15" laptop with OS X or Windows.

idczar said,

I'm guessing 1280 800 or something like that

I would say 960x640, since that's exactly double the iPhone's width and height.

Does this thing have heat issues? it has a few vent holes on it... wonder what kind of heating problems they ran into

pretty disappointed with this release. As everyone as said it is a XL iPod Touch. I feel they could have done better with the UI, had something a little more forward thinking, running a less restrictive OS. Able to use as a computer and not as an iPod Touch. I.e. a finder in which to store and manage files and to access network shares. To have a better range of software instead of blown up apps. I really thought apple would push the boat out and come out with something +1. This is a pretty average announcement.

Scutley said,

I agree.. Because it can't be carried in a pocket like the iPhone, and is small in comparison to a laptop when you don't need to carry it, AND with only App Store... It's essentially a $500 toy.

This could potentially go wrong for Apple. Apps will be primarily made for the iPad and then scaled down, or be made for iPhone and "Enhanced" as an afterthought.

... Just typed "ipad" in the SMS window on my iPhone and it changed it to "uPas" !

"And the iWork demo is done. "So what are we going to charge for applications like this? We're gong to charge just $9.99 each." He means $10 for Pages, $10 for Keynote... etc". For an application that can't fully accomplish what I need? Hm. Even a netbook can handle more than that.

It does look nice [the UI at least, border is huge!], it was always going to.

It'll also be overpriced, I'd imagine.

But I'm waiting for the "WOW" feature. where is that?

NEW APPLE A4 CPU :D

Well now that its out we know what it looks like and I think it looks like a big iPod Touch running the 1st generation software lol.

According to Apple's iPhone software guru, Scott Forstall, the iPad will run "virtually all" iPhone software "virtually unmodified," either in an iPhone-sized area in the center of the iPad's display or blown up to fit the display. Developers will be able to update their iPhone apps to iPaddishness through an enhanced version of the iPhone SDK, to be released today.

The "artsy" look-and-feel of the event's invitation, which featured splashes and blobs of color, is apparently explained by the iPad's "brushes" feature, which allows you to paint on photos, change their colors, and make images of your own.

David Carr of The New York Times made an interesting observation during the iPad demo: "One of the weird things about the presentation is how it is really all about the software," he writes. "The gadget itself is transparent, a window into software."

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/01/27/ipad/

As of now, what we know is the iPad is a bigger iPod Touch + iBook + iWorks

Well, we don't know if iWorks is going to be included or if it will be a PAY apps download.

This will be a very interestng test - as Microsoft lagged with Zune and has yet to do a Zune Phone - outside of the Mac/PC arena, Microsoft have always been playing catch-up. With Microsoft/HP having just launched an identical product - the sales will be most telling!

It only runs existing apps so that you can use something while devs create apps specifically for the iPad. I can see this taking off in a big way. Everyone here is just short sighted. "If it doesn't have a 'full OS' then screw it." Why do people think we have to be running windowed OS's? There has to be a better way to consume information and, at the very least, Apple is trying to think ahead.

I'd love to have one just to play with for a day or two. But I don't want to own one based on what I just saw. My MBP+iPhone is good for my portability.

I couldn't imagine using one of those for an extended period of time. My iPhone is a lot lighter than that, and I get tired holding it up while playing a game for 15 minutes. The only advantage of that type of form factor is it can be used while you are on your feet. But I bet I can type with my iPhone faster than I could with that.

I think Microsoft and their partners might win this "slate" war by the looks of it.

Oh I think you're right about the slate war. There's no way Apple can win that war with this product. They better rethink this and come out with something based on their other products if they want to compete. This will sell a lot only because of the Apple name and reputation and the fact that everyone loves the iPhone (or a lot of people).

It is pretty clear that Microsoft and their partners have put more thought and effort into their product than Apple has. It is almost as if an Apple developer had the CAD of the iPhone opened with Jobs standing behind him...clicked on the "scale" tool, dragged and dropped. And Jobs said, "that looks good. Lets sell that." LOL

Video editing would be so freaking nice on a device like this. Moving sequences around... a little bit like in Minority Report. Unfortunately, 64GB is not the best for video editing, uh... Come on Flash Memory companies, develop higher capacity memory, faster than that! I want 1024GB right now!

Think about it - they had to make a transition between iPhones and iPads. Otherwise they would have released an iPad with 0 third-party apps and everything would need to be rebuilt from scratch? Me thinks it is a good workaround while apps are being made in its native resolution.

Haha the iPhone users all made fun of Windows Mobile having multiple resolutions. This is the exact solution Windows Mobile used -- 6 years ago-- when they started supporting VGA screens. Now the iPhone OS has the same "problem" of multiple resolutions as Windows Mobile.

Looks like Apple didn't take time to plan ahead for resolution increases.

Yea cause iPhone OS developers only need to worry about 2 different resolutions now * rolls eyes*

Though as one of those people I can see this being a big problem when it comes to the size of the app package...

Anyone developing for a fixed resolution is asking for a world of hurt. the iPhone's going to get a screen update sooner or later. At least this might kick some of those developers to update their apps before then.

You know, I think the reason the bezel is so big is so that the next version will look even better. And of course the hardware will be better too. They'll sell these alright. But they sell even more of the new one. They've done it with the iPhone, they'll do it again with the iPad.

should of named it the iFail..... this makes Windows Slate computers look good... why would I want an embedded OS which iPod/iPhone software when I can run a true system as a tablet? Heck I thought this WOULD of been great for the art market being a tablet device, but they basically said no to that market as there is no photoshop, lightroom, apature that can run on it......

I guess this has its uses, but it will most likely be overpriced, and for that size, they could have used the real OSX, with a slightly adapted interface, than the iPhone OS. But guess you gotta sell those fart apps somehow...

The big thick black border is a design feature that's been worn out way back in the past - they're going to regret that decision.. Over all it doesn't look great at all. Awful wasted space

That's cuz Apple bought an unproven semiconductor company a while back and are packaging this thing around it. If the iPad is a failure, Apple execs will blame the chip.

Hoping the 16GB will be nice and cheap, although seems like no pdf reader? = no sale, although I guess there will be an app for that.

I'm pretty sure it'll be able to do PDF. If not built-in, but via an app...

The iPhone comes with a built in PDF reader. Where does it say this won't?

I can't believe the largest size is 64 gb. That is insanely small. I really want to use this as a true inbetween device and 64gb does NOT make that possible, unfortunately. 8(

Why on earth did they go for that name? and thats quite a large bezel :s
If this does become a success, then my god what is the world coming to lol

For around half the price you can get that, probably similar specs to the iPad but a lot better because it has a real OS not some embedded crap meant for phones.

Precisely. The reason Windows tablets just don't work IMHO is because they have Windows. You don't wanna have to prat about with onscreen keyboards, using a Start menu, etc etc.. you want a fluid interface which dynamically changes to suit the apps it runs. I've always thought an "iPhone but bigger" would work as a tablet.. I guess Apple did too so lets see how it does.

I'd certainly like to try one and see if it's any good! Bet it'll cost a packet tho...

I think what he meant was the it was primarily built for a touch interface. It was built mainly for a mouse and keyboard and has tacked on touch (and it feels it).

Agreed. I'm buying one of these for each of my nephews to replace their iPod Touch units. They use the Touch very much like Jobs was using the iPad on stage. They'll love it.

Sadly, there are people like that.

"I own 5 iPhones, and I will buy 10 of these!"

Let them have it. I don't think this will hang on very long. The iPod, iPod touch, and iPhone are all very nice and I liked them all from the start but this thing is ridiculous. I was really hoping Apple was going to have something powerful, cool, user friendly, etc. but this thing fails in every dimension. Probably won't last longer than those old big bubble iMac's of yesteryear that came in turquoise, pink, orange, ....

Apple will hopefully listen to the feedback and come out with the iPad2 which will be what we're really looking for. An oversized iPod touch doesn't fit the bill.

They'll slim it down a bit, fix some bugs, and release it next thing since sliced bread and charge even more for it. Business as usual.

I would have thought they would want something which can actually run a full OS? This has such restricted usage, most would prefer a proper tablet.

Edited by Minimoose, Jan 27 2010, 9:58pm :

Yes... people like us who are power users would rather have a tablet with a full os on it, but for people like my mom or people I work with who can barely use a computer? This would be perfect.

The OS choice is either the best or worse decision they made here. I'm tempted to say it was a good move. While I want multitasking still, ultimatly the tablet isn't being sold as a computer replacement and i doubt you would want to do any serious work on it anyway.

IMHO its a multimedia device and to that end the iPhone OS is more than adequate and the store infrastructure really will give it an edge day one. Being a power user I'd prefer a Windows based tablet with a full OS, but for many this is more than enough.

I don't think it's ugly at all. But it feels too big to carry in your pocket to get it *anywhere* on the go without carrying a bag, and then I can just as well carry a bag with my 15" MacBook Pro. And it feels unnecessarily small to have in your usually relatively spaceous living room. I'm not sure of how it's supposed to be best used. :p

they said it's mistake to try to cramp a full flesh OS into a tablet...I guess stretching a OS into one looks even worst.

The bezel is probably that big so your finders won't obstruct half the view on the screen itself. You need space to hold on without giving unwanted input to the iPad.

Really? its suitably sized for the same thickness as your thumb to hold it? seems good to me.

Note that this is the first generation unit. I believe that the real iPad breakthrough product will be OLED based, but the tech wasn't ready in volume/pricing for release at this time, unfortunately.

Not only that, it's functions don't seem to differ that much either. All it can do is take advantage of 3G networks - not really worth such a hefty price tag

oh dear, what a tragic name. It should only come in pink, and have a bold logo across the top "iPad - for all your feminine hygiene needs"

My guess is that it will not meet sale expectations, I really don't see the appeal of this, when comparing it to just being able to buy an iPhone (although I don't see the appeal of buying one of those either).

if you've got an iPhone or a laptop or have both, you don't need this imop.

In other breaking news "Google Marketplace" and Amazon have removed the iPad from sale stating it duplicates functionality of their own product lineup. A Google spokesman said it was not "rejected" but was just not yet "approved for sale" on their site.

Meanwhile local retailer Harvey Norman says their stocks of the iPad sold out the second they opened their front door. They are currently taking orders for the device at the full "recommended retail price" of $9999.95, but say they do not know when they will have new stock. Harvey Norman said they are so "confident" of the product they know their customers are going to appreciate the special promotion which is a free sample of "Libra Wings" (by redemption) with every sale. Harvey Norman spokesman said they are sure the wings will compliment the iPad perfectly.

Exactly. I simply can't justify the expense. My wife and I both have iPhones and more importantly a Macbook and older Powerbook (soon to be replaced by an iMac). I could definitely see ditching the laptops and having an iPhone, the iPad and an iMac. That would be excellent as the laptop is usually more than we need when sitting on the coach which is why the iPhones get used heavily.

I bet 90% of the people dissing this, sayin it's ugly(how?) the name, the bezel is 2 big, this & that. Are the ones who can't afford (the 850$ version)this beautiful piece because they never will. Or just bout an iPhone or iPod touch and won't have the money the first day it comes out, so are ****ed people will have it before them. And I know half u talkin **** will eventully have one.

Why? I don't see ANY advantages of an iPad over say.. a much more functional netbook at half the price, or even Apples own iPhone which has all the same capabilities (short of iWorks), but fits in your pocket. It doesn't fit in your pocket, so it's not a phone, it doesnt have a big amount of storage (64GB? Really?!), and its unexpandable, so its not a laptop? WHATS THE POINT?

I really cant see it being used for anything other than some small niche applications that are designed to take advantage of it. But iWorks? I don't know about you, but I couldn't type a document without my monitor being at an angle, so how would it work on an iPad?

Seriously, where is the target market? I think Apple have done some great stuff in the last few years, and the majority of their lineup of hardware is damn decent (albeit pricey, but this isn't the point), but I think they really missed the boat on this one.

Nope money is not the issue....The problem is limited storage....64gig lol id fill that up within hours and with only 10hrs battery life you'd constantly be recharging it and trasnfering data onto it.

You would need a big pocket for this to replace your phone

That and rather simplistic computer usage patterns if you can live without multitasking on your primary machine. This device doesn't replace anything, it complements them.
