Apple iPhone delivers up to eight hours of talk time

Apple® today announced that iPhone™ will deliver significantly longer battery life when it ships on June 29 than was originally estimated when iPhone was unveiled in January. iPhone will feature up to 8 hours of talk time, 6 hours of Internet use, 7 hours of video playback or 24 hours of audio playback.* In addition, iPhone will feature up to 250 hours-more than 10 days-of standby time. Apple also announced that the entire top surface of iPhone, including its stunning 3.5-inch display, has been upgraded from plastic to optical-quality glass to achieve a superior level of scratch resistance and optical clarity.

With 8 hours of talk time, and 24 hours of audio playback, iPhone's battery life is longer than any other 'Smartphone' and even longer than most MP3 players," said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO. "We've also upgraded iPhone's entire top surface from plastic to optical-quality glass for superior scratch resistance and clarity. There has never been a phone like iPhone, and we can't wait to get this truly magical product into the hands of customers starting just 11 days from today."

Looks cool, and sounds cool. But I would touch it with a 10 foot pole, I despise telephones. Nothing against them, they're just not for me. I also know a few more peeps here on Neowin that feel the same.

wow look at all this people ... first of all there isnt any single company from phones tp mp3 or mp4 or console or radio or anything that works on battery's said that our product works for X time and actually works for X time... "prove me wrong with links and tests"... its all based on the most minimum use but then again that dosnt mean the phone will work for half hour and thats it... u r not gonna be talking all the time .. u will lsn to songs sometimes watch movie some other time leave it on the table to show off for some more other time also ... but i i think if u call someone and leave the phone on with medium volume then it will be up around 7+ hours ..... now as for the people who say nothing special about the phone.. then the fancy icons and the fancy looks r part of the phone .. i mean tell me why shouldnt i go for a phone that do something in beautiful and go for a phone that do the same thing in a normal way ? and its not like it does only fancy stuff... its speed with handling pics, music, video, web, sms,... etc is quite impressive ..... anyways there is alot of things to be said .. but i say u have something to prove wrong in what they say then wait for the phone to come out and test it, if it dosnt work then prove it to people,... not jump into.. "they lie they blbalablab".. besides why do u have to try to make apple look bad ? or is it because u cant afford to get a mac laptop or ipod or apple products ? and to end it .. whats wrong with a company showing off about their products... wouldnt u show off about something u made ?

My iPod nano went through the washing machine, and even though I was stupid and tried cutting it on right after I got it out of there still wet, it still works fine even to this day. So personally I won't question the iPod's durability. Apple sells so many iPods vs. other players, they are bound to have a higher ratio of problems. My friend works at Best Buy in MP3/Cell Phones, and he says he doesn't sell very many Zunes, and half the ones he does end up getting returned. If someone can come out with an innovative, easy to use product that looks cool and has a matching software platform that is easy to use, a lot of people will go to it. Until then, Apple reigns.

Well, all i can picture (not really having seen an iphone screen yet) is a little elongated white bloob with a black screen and off-white borders (screaming the old ipods yet?) just a square blob....

anyways, i bought an 80gig Ipod Video about 2 years ago and ECK ECK ECK, great for the first six months, but im lucky to get 3+ hours of battery now, the screen went to absolute ****, and i got fed up with itunes. Bleugh.

all the purpose is to make money. do people really care about technological advancement? no, because it is a natural process of time. as time goes on, it will happen. but money is relative, some people make more, some people lose more.

Unfortunately this is a predominantly materialistic world, always has been, always will be. Wait until the day emerges when people buy things because of their actual functionality.

With respect to apple, but my SE W800i did everything I needed...
So why the hell would I pay the huge cost for this apple iThing?

I never got the fuss over the iPod as I hate iTunes and prefer to manage my music collection myself, without drm, blocked to only one mp3 player or anything.

because people who are buying it are not buying it because of it's functionality, they are buying it because it's apple, it looks cool and has shiny icons, touch screen and fancy animations. Of course, it does most of the things other phones have had for while now, including the mp3 and video playback capabilities. But as I said, people who buy it, will buy it 99% because it looks cool and it's fancy.

I hate when people try to find justification behind why they want to spend money, just say it, I want to be cool, so I gotta buy iPhone.

Me personally, I'm still uncertain whether I want to buy an iPhone or Prada, but I'll get one of these for sure. I completely admit it, I want to be cool, I want to have the latest hot stuff and I want to be unique. To be honest I think I would be more unique with Prada phone then with the iPhone that a whole bunch of people will buy on the 29th

The phone will probably do reasonably well in the US, but they've got absolutely zero hope of ever selling it in europe, which is a MUCH bigger cellphone market. The phone is designed for US carriers, all major EU carriers have already refused to take it due to Apple's arrogant demands and restrictions.

Besides, it only supports EDGE, not 3G. EU networks are designed around 3G, they're not going to downgrade their entire infrastructure for Jobs!

Agreed. I don't even bother with cell phones in the US anymore, as they don't offer all the features possible. I would advise purchasing your phones from the UK. I currently use the Sony Ericsson k750i (purchased and shipped from UK) and i'm having a great time with it. I've got a radio and expandable 4GB holds videos, albums, full-length movies... So what if i don't have a snazzy touch screen?? I've already got plenty!

Damn, people re going to get taken in by the clever marketing and the hype...

It's sad really. There are lots of excellent phones out there that do a lot more than the iphone, cost less, and look better...

I own a Sony Ericsson Walkman phone. The sound quality is excellent (most other phones also have great sound).

I dont see how the iphone is going to compete once the hype dies down...

I agree,

noone even knows how good or bad they are and there are all these people wanting them. it could end up being the biggest piece of crud phone ever produced, but becasue all the marketign and hype people get sucked in and ripped off

meh my phone can already do 8 hours + hours of call time, and it doesnt even need all that fancy crap apple's adding

Have you ever seen what happens to screens of tablet PC's after a year or so worth of actual use? They look like ****, they are scratched all over the place and it looks like someone took sandpaper to them. I think i'm going to pass on this touchscreen thing for phones. Also I havnt seen how you activate the touch screen. You are going to have to have some kind of flip down cover like PDA's for it because just having it in your pocket could hit buttons. Or what about when you reach in your pocket to grab anything or the phone its self, odds are you are going to touch the screen.

That's why there is a "switch" to temporary block the screen, just like iPods.

A switch? I thought it was a lock implemented in software.

am i the only one who wonders how they changed the specs/material of this device within 2 weeks of releasing it to at&t?
are we expected to believe they stopped the production line and just threw all of the old ones away? no, it's just a way to keep their name in the news: "look, we're such a nice company, we care about you so we upgraded it to be more durable and last longer."
i ain't buying it... i would bet this is original specs.

or perhaps they just never announced they changed the specs months ago?

Companies always hold back things, Microsoft don't announce all the features of their products as soon as they implement them...

They announced this 2 weeks before because it's information too important to leave until the 29th, there are plenty of people that this will convince to buy the product, battery life was why a lot of people weren't going to buy it! They might now!

i seen commercials on the iphone and it looks impressive... better than i thought it was going to be.

p.s. and i rarely use phones in general, so i dont think ill get one but if i did use phones it sure looks like it would be a top choice

ummm i doubt it, marketing is one thing apple is really really good at, and making stuff look pretty. thats about it, i doubt they really give a crap

oh you mean like that great quality product the ipod. also known as technically one of the worst MP3 players every built with the most issues. i.e. it's really a piece of crap, however it looks pretty and everyone else has one, so i have to get one NOT. when i see comments from poeple like, my first one and second one broke so i got a new one, or i luv these things i'm on my fourth one. really if they make such great products wouldn't you buy one and it lasts forever. all ican say is if it's apple it looks pretty

I am still on my first iPod and it still works fine (3 years old now). It is much better than my old Creative player so you cannot simply write them off as crap.

i didn't write them off, they are pretty.

I can't remember the site, but it was listed as one of the ten worst technologies for 2006, now for it to be on the list it can't be that great.

So an unamed site listed them as the worst, not exaclty a compelling argument...

The millions of people who bought them inlcuding many who went on to buy newer generations of the iPod says a great deal more in favour of them.

yep the ipod is crap, i got one as a birthday present. i wouldn't buy one myself, but i would buy a zune if i didn't have my ipod. the ipod got popular by default, it was the first mp3 player i heard of, and advertised very well. so it stuck as being the must have mp3 player.

it's called marketing, the same reason VHS won over beta even though beta was technically better. The fact apple dominates the mp3 market has nothign to do with quality products and all to do with marketign brilliance.

Although some of your points have been a little... questionable, this one's pretty much on the mark (not sure about VHS/Betamax, I don't know the specifics in that one). The iPod just came along at the right time, when nothing else really like it was around. Yes, this was very innovative, and excellent judgment from Apple. However, since then, other players have come on in leaps and bounds, and the iPod (despite it's numerous generations) hasn't changed all that much.
You may argue it doesn't need to, but imo it does in reliability terms - I've had some friends whose iPods have worked flawlessly for a long time, and some who have had to send it back/get a replacement many, many times (and these aren't the sort of people who'd be smashing the thing around, we're talking manufacturing defects here). The iPod isn't somehow technologically superior really (especially at the price point it sells at, but that's Apple's business plan - also very clever), it's just the most well known name in digital audio players, and Apple's marketing dept. have done a very good job of keeping it that way.

The VHS won because JVC (the inventor) licensed the technology to anyone and a buncs of different companies (many of them from Singapore and Hong Kong) started to manufacture VHS, while SONY (Betamax) wanted to be the sole manufacturer. BTW there is no way to determine which was better, because you can't do that in an objective manner, in some parts the VHS was better in some parts the Betamax.

About the iPods... well it is a damn good mp3 player, not just look great, but it is great in fact! It is robust, manufacturing quality is way above most of the other players, and it is beautiful as beautiful it can be, could it be improved? ... well yes, and iPhone is an awesomely improved iPod too

What should a phone be able to do do... first you should be able to talk with it, that is the most important feature, second, be able to send SMS, third is e-mail... most phones can do this, but full sized, full featured Internet is iPhone ONLY stuff, why should one need 3G? I will be able to talk to other people, to send SMS, e-mail, have my contacts, calendar and the whole Web, what more would I need, please tell, me, because as a digital-lifestyle guy who are btw a geek/programmer I can't see anything I need and I couldn't do on iPhone. 3G is a poor "substitution" for the Web, people need to realize, that iPhone is not a phone, it is an iPhone, a whole new category (because of full Web), thats it.

this is going to be a truly revolutionary product. It will push the competition to compete with this. I can't wait to see what we'll have next year or the year following this. Great stuff.

it aint a lot different from most of the phones /pda's on the market now

whocares78, all I know is it's the first one I've ever wanted.

What have you been smoking?

A new phone in 2007 without 3G is like buying a car without the engine, sure it looks nice but it won't take you were you want to go...

It hasn't even been released yet, the only reason you want it is becasue of the marketing, i would give you some advice, wait until someone else you know buys one and then have a look and play, i am sure it is not as good as it is being made out to be. apple stuff never is
