Apple pulls back NVIDIA Update released on Monday

Apple has retracted the NVIDIA Graphics Update 2009 released on Monday from its website and automatic software update system without any explanation. The update was meant to address issues with its Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI adapter and also boost HD video performance. The issues are not fixed even after the update and still continues for some users as reported in the company's support forum.

Several users started reporting long back at the Apple forums regarding trouble with their new notebook's graphics performance. The problem was noted when switched to the integrated 9400M graphics processor but not when using the discrete 9600M GPU.

One of the affected user reported in the forums that the problem was worse after applying the update. The user was not able to use his external samsung 22" monitor on extended desktop mode but only in mirror mode.

Below is a video showing severe flickering on a display driven by a MacBook for which the update was released and retracted now

Ugh i run a network with 50 macs, now i can tell you right up to get something fixed in a mac will set you back a small fortune.
Whereas if it was a pc i could go out and get the same part for alot cheaper!
Infact i can build some nice pc that would run rings around any new current mac.
Theres nothing at all special about apple macs, they are just a normal pc using NORMAL pc parts at expensive prices. The quality is not better, it's not gold plated and it dont sing or wash my dishes.

However listen to this
When my mate signed up for apple, guess what half the training was on first Yup you guessed it, a windows pc.

I cannot believe someone can put so much time and effort into supporting a brand of computer that adds no real value to ones life. Am I visiting the wrong forum?

LTD: does your Mac make browsing the Internet (and making posts on Neowin) that much more enjoyable and efficient? I bet your Mac actually changes the Internet itself. You're probably browsing the iInternet, while I'm stuck on generic.

If so, then . I wish I had spent the extra money on a Mac too.

Go slam your head into a cinderblock wall until you see a red smear. That will put you into the same mindset as a Mac user. Can't think of an easier way to do it, since lobotomies need a legitimate reason, usually.

Hey this was fun

I dig being the Holier-than-thou Mac guy....

I really thought this was classic

"These poor excuses of life" do not understand the power of Apple.
Flawless beauties from the bosom Steve Jobs. Each product is spermatozoa of brilliance that will only breed superior caliber products each generation.
Do YOU not understand? Apple is life
Jobs and god are almost spelled alike - coincidence? I think not

It is amazing how much you can irritate people.
Next time I jump in, I will refer to myself in the 3rd person.... make them hate me more....

I dont hate you...do I think you are annoying...yes. I dont get why people cannot have intelligent convos...thats all. Instead of trying to cause issues...why dont you provide some insight and use your brain. Being a jerk/ass is easy. I can be one to...if I really wanted....

Dude.... How much more can be said about a flickering video card?
It could be all summed up with "I got one, that stinks" and "too bad - hope you get it resolved"

I wasnt referring to you as in "hate me" but everyone... Everyone hates that type of personality of "I am #1 and you are not"....
Take a look at posts 9.9 and 12

It is just fun...and I dont own a Mac... well I got access to one at work but it's just sitting there

Well I am sorry for not seeing in to your sarcasm and joking around. I dont know you and its hard to tell when someone is joking this way. Thats why when I kid around, i put a smiley or say something else indicating I am joking.

But NEOWIN really needs to stop these articles. They dont provide any new info and it starts PC vs Mac wars. I didnt start this one, but I did participate. I like participating as long as people are civil.

You have to post in apple threads more often, that was awesome.

"Mac users are arrogant and full of themselves more often than not. They think Macs are bullet proof, when they are not. Its this arrogance that is going to bring Mac down. " just awsome!!!! Well said

We've been waiting for over seven years to be brought down. Nothing yet. Quite a run.

If that ever happens down the line, you can take credit for predicting it. Even a broken clock is right twice a day.

Yea, Apple has had...is having...a good run...but are having issues already and it is starting.

This has been "starting" since 2006.

I'm inclined to wait until something comes along that is actually meaningful. And we don't know when that will be. Given Apple's market strategy, and the fact that Windows will still be the dominant OS in terms of sales for a very long time to come - even if Apple grabs more of the market - which means MS will stay the main target for malware, it may never happen.

Every attack is meaningful in some way or another...big or small. And true, major attacks may never happen with Macs, but I am betting they will.

Mac users saying "we get no virus, we are totally secure, we need no protection" is like dangling a big slab of meat in front of a tiger. Someone is going to take the bait just to prove people wrong. Also, like I said before, the economy could help spur things. With people losing their jobs, salaries getting cut...someone may turn to hacking Macs to get personal info and steal money. But I am just speculating...time will tell.

Perhaps you "inconsequential Windows stains" enjoy buying sub par components and upgrading each piece of garbage it's composed up to a better piece of garbage. Good for you. Probably you are used to this as when it rains out, you need to repair your house with more mud blocks and hay as well. Your scrubbing dishes or emptying a septic tank or performing feline enemas or whatever you "Rancid birth defects" do to get money outside of a lawsuit for spilling coffee on your self at a restaurant...
While working you hear on the radio... the Vatican blew up!!!!
This is a good example of what this Nvidia card incident is to Apple.

Thats it ... if you do not understand then go back to playing 64 bit mindsweeper

Wow, you are really uninformed. Just because a person has a PC, doesnt mean the parts are subpar. If you are a moron and build a PC with crap parts, then thats ur fault. But for people like me who use high quality parts that are cheaper than apples...well, our systems run fine. The reason people bitch and moan about PCs is that they dont know how to build a PC. People who pic cheap parts cannot be lumped in with the rest of us who know how to build a computer.

Just because a PC part is cheaper than a Mac, doesnt mean its subpar either. PC parts are cheaper because they are NON PROPRIETARY! And we have a much wider variety to choose from. So companies need to compete with one another on a much wider scale than Macs. So PC prices are cheaper for the same quality, or higher, parts than you get for a Mac. If a part goes wrong in a PC, its really easy to replace that part. If I spend $600 for a video card, I expect good support as well.

Like I said, Mac users are people who want a company to decide for them and dont really want to do many things with their PC. PC users decide for them selves and think freely. If we want to do multiple things with our PC, we can without to much problems. If we want to use linux and not windows, we can. We have a WIDE variety of software and hardware to choose from.

Mac users are arrogant and full of themselves more often than not. They think Macs are bullet proof, when they are not. Its this arrogance that is going to bring Mac down. PCs never used to get virus's or spyware either...remember that? Then they gained in popularity and over took Mac/Apple and the majority of people/companies use PCs. This is why they are getting nailed like a 2 dollar whore. And I am interested to see if people will get more and more desperate with the way the economy is going and maybe start to hack macs more and more.

I havnt had any spyware/viruses on any of my PCs in over 10 years. Macs are gaining more and more popularity and they are already getting hit more and they will continue to get hit more and more. And all the arrogant Mac users who say "i dont need antivirus" will be screwed. I cannot wait for this day. I dont wish damage to anyones systems, but this Mac arrogance has to stop.

Also, PC users can fix their problems without much issue...Mac users have to call support...poor macs :)

If money was not an object and time was not an issue..how would you answer this:
I am hungry - there are 3 restaurants - I am going to eat:
a) Gourmet
b) Fast Food
c) microwave burrito at 7-11

I choose A for Apple.

You are more likely to go with B (as in Building a better PC)

Your breeding and bloodline is not of our quality (LTD and myself)...
Where we are expecting nothing but the best, caviar and lobsters you are content with potato chips and soda. Or is it a 5 lb block of cheese being handed out of the back of military transport vehicle that you are more accustomed to?

I bet you do not even have 1 velvet pillow in your house.
I found a PC user half buried in a box of kitty litter the other day.

Wow, you went from a Mac vs PC postings to personal attacks? Dude, grow up. You are comparing food to computers? Wow, you are really stretching and must be desperate to make a point. And yea, I called Mac users drones, but I didnt single anyone out like you did. But desperation effects people differently I guess. At least when I talk to LTD, he doesnt personally attack anyone and we have a good discussion.

I build a better PC recently cheaper than what I could get a Mac for. So I am choosing the best...so get a clue on what a PC is before posting.

And for the record, I may pick 7-11 over gourmet. Depends on what I am hungry for...doesnt matter the money. Just because I have a lot of money, doesnt mean I need to buy expensive things. Thats how people go broke...wasting money. Why I choose a PC...more/better for the money.

And if you need an example of what more money isnt better...here ya go...

I bought a Chevy Tracker back in 2000. I kept this car for 8 years before I got rid of it. The only thing that was wrong with it was the AC compressor finally went out. Living in Arizona, i need AC. A few friends during the past year always had their Corvettes, 350 Zs, BMWs, Mercedes, and Mustangs in the shop. They always laughed and made fun of my car. But you know what? My car has only been in the show once for something that went wrong with it. So yea, my car was cheap...but it worked and lasted longer than all my friends cars.

Hmm, if you say so...guess thats why he went back and edited his post to include another attack...but hey, I have been attacked by better people.

Except that it's not that radical of a difference. It's more like:

Gourmet
Quality restaurant
Fast food

I personally like going out to eat, not spending a fortune for no particular reason unless it were a special occasion. But that doesn't relate to computers really at all.

Style is like designer clothes, perhaps for women, brands like Coach come to mind. It all functions the same, it's just "pretty".

Apple computers don't function the same, which is why they rely on Windows for other things, from programs to games. That isn't to say they aren't decent and that it doesn't have quality software of its own, but it's not as radical as you're making it out to be.

Nah, he isn't supporting me, he's just having fun with the thread, which is a lot better than have it go down hill.

Its funny how Mac users dont realise that Apple would sell their userbase's souls if they could, just for the money.
Well I guess this article is the proof that their prices ARE way too high for the quality you get.

And why is this news? Someone trying to stir up Mac vs PC crap again? Come on NEOWIN, put some quality news on the front page and let all the people wanting and needing to bash Macs and PCs post in the forum.

This isnt news. This is something that has happened to Dell, Gateway, HP...whatever. **** happens, get over it. I am sure Apple will resolve the issue. And just because Apple is having the issue, doesnt meant that us Dell/Gateway/PC users dont get deluxe or special treatment. Anything I want from Dell, I get. And that includes replacement parts out of warranty.

Oh, and TLD, I buy products for what I need. Meaning, I will take a POS ford car with rust all over and ripped seats over a BMW, Jag, Mercedes...whatever. Just as long as the car runs and starts up everyday I am fine. I dont live in my car so why pay a butt load of money for one. I think the same way about my computer. Yea, it would be nice to have a 4k-6k system....but will I every fully utilize the system? Probably not so why waste the cash.

I'm particular about the product that I use on a daily basis. I have to look at it, work with it, and it has to last.

I'm sure you spend more on what's important to you as well.

Very rarely do I spend a lot of money on something. Not that I cannot, but I am smart with my $$$.

I have used PCs before for 6-10 years and when I got rid of the PCs, they still work. The whole phrase "you get what you pay for" works for some things, but not everything. I also wanted to get a iPod touch...but my 30gb 3rd Gen iPod works just fine.

Like LTD...I, myself, am not much different than the rest of you. Like you, my sheets make my bed look like a giant iPhone. I dunk my Apples in white chocolate and take 1 big bite out of them before putting them in the fridge. I wear black turtleneck shirts, get a crewcut and dye my hair grey.
...and sometimes when I want to get a little crazy....I wear button fly jeans.
See, I am a normal Joe Sweatsock when not sitting infront of my Apple Computer.

Oh, I have used an Mac many times and i prefer PCs. We have several Macs here at work that I support and need to fix...not to mention the many Macs I work on outside of work.

When the intel macs came out, we ordered 4 of them. Out of the 4, 1 brought down the network on one of our floors. For some reason it was sending broadcast packets acrossed the line flooding out network with traffic. The other 3 didnt do this. We unplugged the mac and a week later when I had time to look at it, I could not get it to reproduce the problem. So yea, Macs have unexplained issues right out of the box as well as PCs...:P

Yea, blame anything but Apple huh? It wasnt out network as everything is working fine. We narrowed the issue to the Mac and when we removed the network cable, everything came back online. It was a Mac issue plain and simple.

Everyone is entitled to good treatment as consumers. That sounds rather elitist and to think you are better than others because of your computer is just shallow. What are you talking about??

I buy a product that is purported and advertised to be of better quality, do you think I'd settle for the same old service that comes with lesser products?? I shelled out for a Mercedes CLK, the dealership had better roll out the red carpet for me when something goes wrong.

In the REAL WORLD, quality of service and customer care is hierarchical. That's the unfortunate truth. Yes, we should ALL be treated the same way, etc. But we're not. That's something for Marxism and Communism to do - and there's something to be said for classical Marxism, for sure. But we don't live in that world, and the amount of people that DON'T want Socialism of any kind is staggering, and those very same people silently support the way things are now. But they complain when I want my money to mean what it's supposed to under this system! There are First Class seats, and then there are Economy seats. And sometimes, when I want to experience a bit more comfort I have to spend more to go First Class. It should ALL be first class, but it isn't. And I can't change that.

So when I pay *more* for something (that comes with a long list of company mission statements that say "why we're better than everyone else), I expect to get a higher level service. Simple as that. Apple users are accustomed to a certain level of service and attention. We buy in to that. That's part of the deal. It's a little unwritten rule that means everything in the world when it is honoured. Apple prides itself in doing business a certain way and treating customers a certain way. It's a model for the rest of the industry. We buy into Apple because of these differences. We have every right to feel cheated and ripped off when they don't. And Apple most certainly CAN deliver on their promises. We just meed to nudge them back into line now and then.

It's not about what level of service everyone deserves, or what we are or are not entitled to. It's about reasonable expectation of service based on Apple's promises and self-stated reputation.

Unwritten rule...meaning it isnt a rule and Apple can go back on it at anytime. Thats why I get everything in writing...

But seriously, just because someone advertises something to be of better quality, doesnt mean it is. There are places that advertise food as good as your grandmas...but it isnt and Id take my gmas cooking anyday. I have seen expensive cameras, cars, computers, games systems...whatever...go bad right out of the box. I have also seen the cheapest parts last forever. Remember when Linksys became popular? What about LG? Hell, I remember when LG used to be a generic brand with cheap prices. Now they are a name brand still with the same prices.

Apple has been getting a lot of negative press lately. Probably because they are doing well and getting to big for themselves. They are growing big financially, but not as a company. I remember when I heard nothing negative about Apple but those days are gone so get used to it. This is how it started with PCs, Mac users, so be prepared.

Whenever ANYTHING goes wrong on a Mac, you are all up in arms bitching and moaning. When something goes wrong on a PC, the fix (not from the manufacturer sometimes) is online within hours. There are tons of work arounds for issues on PCs so unless its a hardware issue, we are not left without a solution for very long. When something goes wrong on a Mac, you are all left at the mercy of Apple support.

Mac users need someone to cradle them in their arms and tell them its ok. They need someone to tell them what they can and cannot use. Its sad really.

I upgraded my drivers on my PC once on my video card and had flickering and blocked images. I removed them and went back to the old version. Problem fixed in 10 minutes.

Probably...but the arrogance and superiority of Mac users annoy me. They act like they are so much better than the rest of the world. Maybe we should let them run things and see what happens....can you say higher taxes?

Actually what made my day was this:
"We're entitled to first class treatment"

I mean this just opened up a whole comedy skit right there
...first thing that hit me was a picture of a manger, a few animals around, and a baby Jobs in a cradle. Then I was thinking Ric Flair with his narcissistic remarks on wrestling.
It was all coming together naturally

"I got Leers Jets, Rolex's, $16,000 necktie, a pen with ink from an albino squid...Wooooooooooooooooooooooooooo"

They lied to you. We've been trying to tell you that for years.

I can get along with LTD fine some days, but sometimes, he just comes out and surprises me...

I buy a product that is purported and advertised to be of better quality...

Aren't they all? Doesn't every company claim to be number one? Best service, best deals, best products? It's all marketing. If you really buy into all that, then I don't care what your IQ is or how intelligent you are, you're a fool!

Companies are out there to make a profit, deliver products in a timely manner, and do what's in their best interests. They don't care about you! This is just an image! At the end of the day, it's all about filling their pockets. Apple's only key interest here is to make sure that you people stay under the impression that their products are of a higher standard so that you'll continue to throw your money at them.

They are a company. No different, despite them telling you to think different.

No lies. Just some carelessness that pops up now and then. By itself, it isn't a big deal, but if customers don't treat it as one, we're sending the wrong message.

Can say the same thing about PCs....

Apple, unlike others, pays attention to its Target Market and what it wants. The way everything is put together shows they actually make an effort in giving a crap about the user and how they interact with their products.

Which is why it's important to hold them to their stated standard of excellence. To their usual standard. It's not just Apple's responsibility to enforce it within their own ranks, it's also our responsibility.

A bit of straying will happen from time to time, but it's a rarity, thankfully. But if we accept that publicly and vocally, then that encourages laziness. Apple users should not allow themselves to put up with the same crap that inflicts users of generic boxes on a regular basis.

Back into 50,000 RPM spin mode, I see. I have now had at least one less problem with Windows than you have with OSX, but I suspect the list is probably a LOT longer than that.

I pay attention when I build my PC. It may be "generic" but it works better than the Intel quad core Macs we have at work. We buy Dells at work mainly and they always come well assembled. Every once in a while something comes apart...but that is shippings issue really as I have had issues with Macs coming in with video cards needing to be reset as well.

We're entitled to first class treatment
I am an Apple owner and proud to be part of the community. I have an Apple tattoo and Apple stickers on my Volkwagon to prove it.
Apple is and always will be the bestest. We are not only entitled to the best but, dammit, it is our god given birth right to have the best.
I am appalled that this is going on. And this happening on Superbowl Weekend is just unacceptable.
You poor excuses for so-called "meer mortals" with PC's and Windows dont (nor could) understand what is happening here. I believe I can speak for LTD, but we WILL have lawyers involved in this.
I am calling Apple right now to get down to the bottom of this. I...I...I am just ...no words can describe my outrage.

Steve Jobs once said:
"It is amazing how easy it is to get people to follow you. What I find sad is we can write down 4 random numbers, toss a dollar sign in front of it and people will buy my stuff without question. Its not the money I am making but the power these people feel buying this stuff that gets me"

That's better. A little over the top (no need for lawyers . . . yet), but that's the right attitude. Stand up for yourself.

Just remove that false Steve Jobs quote and you're good to go.

Over the top? You dont sound like you are 100% with me on this.
I think not

Your funny. I am a PC user so I cannot understand what Mac users are going thru. PC users must be dumb mindless drones who dont know what they are doing. PC users NEVER EVER have problems with drivers or software so PC users dont know whats going on.

Look, if I wanted a company to dictate to me what hardware and software I can use, I will go with Apple. If I wanted to buy over priced hardware when I can get a better PC for cheaper, I will buy an Apple. If I wanted to be arrogant and full of myself, I will buy an Apple.

There are REALLY expensive parts for PCs as well. The difference is that all the hardware doesnt come from Apple. We have lots of choices of what to use and its easy to build a PC. Since it is easy to build a PC, any moron could do it. Morons meaning people who go out and buy cheap parts and expect their system to work perectly. But for those of us who dont skimp, well, we a high quality machine that lasts forever. But there are some cases where hardware goes bad after a few months, or right out of the box for PCs and Macs. Hardware manufacturers are not perfect and they will have issues from time to time regardless if it is a Mac or a PC...Ford or Ferrari...

I'll just pretend that line of religious Apple ass kissing was sarcasm... edit: it was sarcasm. Sorry :P

Reality: Crap happens. Some of the earlier Macbooks had problems with paint shedding off - just like those 'junk brands.' But that wasn't anyone else's problem but Apple's, was it?

At least this was a simple driver messup. I can't imagine what response you'll spew out when that chip overheats. :P

/Spews Coffee onto floor!

I know what you're doing here....

I am surprised they did not discover the issue as they have full control over what hardware is inside and can test it to death. I can see PC drives having more issues due to the amount of potentially conflicting software.

LOL they cant make it work when they have full control over what hardware is inside and can test it to death. Apple joy as usual.

Clearly nVidia is a branch of Apple, right? They have full control of the hardware, after all.

C'mon, get with it already. Just because Apple can choose what chip goes into their stuff doesn't mean that they don't have to develop drivers like everyone else. Do you heckle nVidia when their own in-house drivers have issues?

Digix said,
nvidia quality for you ;)

You might have a point. The ATI partnership was better. Not sure it would have met volume or demand, though.

I have this problem with BOTH graphics cards and there's nothing I can do to fix it, it's just constantly there on my external display :\
