Apple set to release iOS 4.2 today for iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch

Apple announced today that it plans to release iOS 4.2 today for iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch owners.

4.2 brings over 100 new features from iOS 4.0 and 4.1 to the iPad including multi-tasking, folders support, a unified inbox, game center support and AirPlay/AirPrint. “iOS 4.2 makes the iPad a completely new product, just in time for the holiday season,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “Once again, the iPad with iOS 4.2 will define the target that other tablets will aspire to, but very few, if any, will ever be able to hit.”

iPad owners can now make use of app switching which was introduced in iOS 4.0 for iPhone. iOS 4.2 unifies both platforms and provides access to the new AirPlay feature. AirPlay allows users to stream music, video and pictures wireless from an iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch directly to an Apple TV. Apple has also introduced AirPrint in 4.2 which allows iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch users to print documents wirelessly from their iDevices.

In other related news, Apple is understood to be readying an updated iPad for Christmas. The new iPad will feature an integrated SIM card according to reports in The Telegraph newspaper. Apple is planning to release the integrated-SIM version of the iPad in time for the holiday season or soon after.

Why does size matter here? Why do you care? You cant download large files? It takes too long? It took me 40 seconds? Do large file sizes matter today?

The only reason you replied was to tell people it took you 40 seconds to download, but for some reason phrased it as a question, so ha.

They do if your only internet is Mobile Broadband, and you have a small, say 3-8 GB Limit.

Wrong, forget that it took me 40 seconds. Why does size matter? Is it about the time it takes you to download? Do you think the download should be smaller? Why does size matter today? You care? Why do you care?

Wow, that article was only three paragraphs long but manged to squeeze in an epic amount of Job's ego. I thought 4.2 was being skipped and 4.2.1 was being launched instead

Still hoping for a fix for the proximity sensor.

This was apparently fixed in 4.1. I'm not having the problems that I use to have.

Still experiencing it here, unfortunately. So are a lot of others on various forums.

And here. It's so annoying to be talking and realised my ear has muted me or put the caller on hold.

That will be the same build as the 4.2.1 GM build they released recently, right? I hope so...

I hope so too. Not really sure yet

Yeah. 4.2.1 but for press purposes it will be referred to as 4.2.

can't be arsed to buy mobileme, really they should offer it free as an incentive, maybe give advertising on it to cover costs

One feature that has sneaked along without detection is "The Find My iPhone (or iPad or iPod touch) feature is now free to use without a MobileMe℠ subscription and helps you locate your missing device.* The Find My iPhone app is a free download on the App Store℠ and lets users easily locate a missing device on a map and have it display a message or play a sound. Users can even remotely lock or wipe data from a lost device to protect privacy. "

*The free Find My iPhone feature is available for iPhone 4, iPad or new iPod touch (4th generation).

Couldn't edit my response above, where do we sign up for it? O_o

I'm not sure, think you download the app from the app store.

I just wonder how I am able to find my iPhone4 with an app that is on my lost iPhone4

They hopefully allow this through their webpage also, otherwise it's plain b***sh*t, same as their supposed printing feature.

Big time, but they are right too, there is nothing even close for now.

They have a right to be until someone makes a product that sells more.

Umm... they are a company trying to push their products. If what you call "arrogance" works, then why stop? All company statements about its own products are going to come across as arrogant. I mean, they aren't going to say it is a mediocre or sub-par product, now are they? We don't live in Carebear world.

Exactly. I don't understand why people can't comprehend simple marketing strategies.

I think most commenters see the world through the prism of High School or see the tech world like sport's fans see their favorite teams.
