Apple Store goes down ahead of iPad 2 announcement

AppleStoreDown

It's pretty safe to say that Apple will be unveiling the iPad 2 later today. All the signs have appeared in the last couple of hours, including a possible leak of the product on Amazon Germany, and now the Apple Store has been taken offline for "updating".

Apple always take their store offline hours before any major event when a new product is being unveiled. Eagerly awaiting consumers can only expect the iPad 2 to be available for pre-order (or purchase) once the store comes back online sometime after the event.

According to the Amazon Germany website, the iPad 2 will feature the following specifications:

  • Thunderbolt
  • A camera
  • 1.2GHz CPU
  • 9.7-inch screen
  • Wi-Fi
  • Bluetooth

Shortly after the leak, the product link was pulled offline.

The Apple event starts at 10AM PST / 1PM EST. We hope to see Steve Jobs appear on stage to unveil the latest iPad to the world. Stay tuned to Neowin for the big announcement!

Is it me, or does the iPad 2 add absolutely nothing useful? Unless you really really really need facetime and uber fast sync to your overpriced macbook? Just seems a bit of a pointless update, unless they still have something in the bag ...

I find the iPad useless to begin with. Who really *needs* it when how many already have an iPhone? They're the same friggin thing!

I know plenty of people that did not buy an iPad because it had no camera. I know... wtf. But yea, there are people that were waiting for that.

The screen size changes everything. It's not just a bigger iphone You can interact with apps in a way you couldn't on the iphone.

And I don't own an iphone. Or a cell phone at all. I do have an ipod touch. I wouldn't bother surfing the web on it. Screen is just too damn small. I use it as an ipod and for pandora and that's it.

The screen real estate leads to uses that aren't practical on the small screen of the iPhone. There are also some things that are quicker and more convenient with the iPad as opposed to carrying a laptop all the time, as well.

But yes, some people have no need. It's just a toy to most of us on these boards.

It's not unusual for the apple store to go down for an event. It is, however, unusual for it to go down 3 hours before the event. Normally it goes down right before or during.

Which makes me think they are adding several new products and not just a new ipad.

will it really be available for sale today or is this just an announcement to say it will be available like in may or something?

What kind of lame-a$ store needs to be taken offline just to add a single product?
Free advertisement

It generates so much buzz for FREE....a lot more than a press release would ever

Will it be magical? Will it bring features that no other device has offered before? Will Steve dismiss all of the competitors devices as rubbish?
Joy...Cant wait.

quite possibly yes...thunderbolt....only the new macbook pros released less than a week ago have it...
pretty unique feature...if you have the mac to go with it that is.

They take a store down to add a new product.
This must be one the best marketing tricks.
Web sites don't go down for updates.

someone must be editing the site in Frontpage, Excel and VBA macros

Exactly They do it because tech sites like this one go crazy and post stories about how it's down. Cue hundreds of Apple fans refreshing the page to see new stuff

Amazon and other modern sites never go down just to add a new product. Everybody knows that some new products will come out today, so I don't think is a marketing strategy, just bad web site design or lack of capacity to sustain the numerous refreshes from Apple fans.

Amazon has a bit of a different kind of store though: for example, it's much more generic, and doesn't have to deal with the same kind of extraordinary load peaks (though I'm sure they do get some peaks).

Its just a lame marketing trick. Of course Amazon has to be able to stay in operation as new products are added. Other stores would lose a lot of money. Apple has a very small (relative) selection of products on their web site. They go down to generate hype so all the tech bloggers can blog about how the site is down and all the tech blog commenters can login and make these comments about it.

well since they are not in the web hosting business, they could use that trick anytime.
2. hiring people to lineup for the openning is another one.
3. the employee came out and tell you that it's sold out since they only stock 5 of them for the openning.
