Apple: "We had a record weekend" for new iPad sales

Apple is claiming that the first few days of "The new iPad" generated "record" sales but today its CEO Tim Cook stopped short of offering any specific sales numbers. In the conference call this morning, (you can listen to the repeat on Apple's web site), a financial analyst asked about how the new iPad did in terms of its first sales weekend. However Cook only said, "We had a record weekend, and we're thrilled with it."

There's no word if by "record weekend" he meant record sales for the iPad, record sales for any product Apple has launched or indeed any color beyond that small statement. We have noted that The new iPad was not an instant sellout on Friday at Apple stores in New York City but that fact may not mean anything due to Apple allowing for online pre-orders for the tablet over a week before it went on sale at brick and mortar stores.

Apple did announce today that it will offer its shareholders a quarterly dividend of $2.65 per share starting sometime in Apple's July-September financial quarter. In addition, Apple will spend $10 billion of its nearly $100 billion cash balance to buy back shares starting on September 30. Apple plans to spend a total of $45 billion over the next three years on these programs. Cook said that will still leave Apple with enough money to "maintain a war chest for strategic opportunities and have plenty of cash to run our business."

when will people ever get a life!?!? one genius was writing in a comment on some site that he's going to sell his ipad 2 to his parents and buy the new ipad... what the hell was wrong with his ipad 2!?! I bet the bloody idiot doesn't even know where his country is on the map without his ipad... but non the less he needs a new toy to play with and his awesome genius parents are buying it.. I know... I'm making many assumptions here but I know they're correct! ignorant *******... yes, you know who you are!

Of course it was a record weekend. This is the most popular tablet on the planet and it just had a very worthwhile refresh adding the most beautiful screen for a tablet ever and it is still selling at the original price.

The anti Apple folk have been jumping on the fact it didn't sell out in stores since it was released a couple of days a go as some sort of justification that the device has poor sales (compared to usual). Don't forget the iPad 2 didn't have pre-orders, if you wanted one you waited in line, hence the massive queues, the iPad 3 did have pre-orders, it is likely most who wanted it decided to pre-order it..

What are "Apple Haters" even doing, browsing for news and details about Apple? Shouldn't you be looking at bluescreens right now?

You sure? They aren't even marketing it as revolutionary. Look at the sight. They are calling it resolutionary.

RESOLUTIONARY read it again.

hahahaha the old ipad is better... the difference is just the name. the screen they talk about doesnt even make people select it...

If they really had a record breaking weekend apple wont wait for some one to ask them before they tell the world... i know they did pretty bad compared to ipad 2... and most people that got this one got it because they are exchanging it with their ipad one and ipad... apple use that deal to push the sales up why!!! because they know the screen is not enough to make people buy this new one.

How about you post up some numbers to backup your statement that Apple did pretty bad compared to the iPad 2? Oh that's right, you can't, because even the CEO hasn't released those yet, and you're just being a dumba$$ troll.

I picked up the new iPad on launch day, upgrading from an iPad 1, and this model blows it away, especially for photography!

A rather vague statement. I find it hard to believe you'd have a record setting anything when a lot of people are hanging on to their iPad2. The display is amazing and all but I don't exactly have 500+ dollars to drop on a new device every year. Besides, I'm saving up for the Nokia tablet.

As much as i dislike apple, i think you're making a fool out of yourself. Nokia tablet will never even see the light of the day and their hardware is crap. Not to mention the OS as well. iOS tablet have plenty of app to take advantage and you know that! iLife is an example.

If the Lumia phones are anything to go by, Nokia tablets will be well built.

Doubtful since initial iPad 2 supplies were extremely low.

It was apparently only a measly 3 million. Shareholders must be pretty hacked off right now, huh?

Hey now, even though I don't use iPads, I'm a shareholder too. I know a profitable company when I see one.

Anyway, my earlier comment was a joke.

Then we are all poking fun and joking together, right?

While Apple is usually quick to boast huge sales numbers the fact they do not let them out kinda says more than the marketing drivel..

guess the repackaging of the same is wearing off as far as the hype goes..

All apple can do right now is keep telling the world how awesome their iDevice has been selling and microsoft, samsung, nokia, sony just need to watch and learn ! Apple is such a phony in many way. they need to stick their iPod,iPhone,iPad straight up their candy ass!

Does the iPad 3, sorry, the "New iPad", still have mono speakers?

Or you can call it the 3rd gen iPad, like a normal person...

Thank you sooooo much for the clarification, smart-ass!
Funny how you missed the point of the question, being show knowledgeable about the "3rd Gen iPad" and all...

The speaker on the iPad really doesn't hold up well against, let's say, the RIM PlayBook's front-facing stereo speakers.

On the topic of the name though, it's just called the iPad, just like the MacBook Air is called the 'MacBook Air' or the iPod Nano is called the 'iPod Nano', and the new Apple set-top-box is called 'Apple TV' and not the 'Apple TV 2' ... my guess is that the next iPhone will be called simply 'iPhone' as well. The whole 1, 2 (3G), 3 (3GS), 4, 5 (4S) naming schemes were pretty un-Apple like anyway and downright messy.

Hello pot, meet kettle.

It is fun watching the Apple defenders of the faith twitch every time this is done. Call it M$, or claim that people are confused about the different versions of Windows, that is fine. Call it iTouch, or show how people are confused over the naming of the iPad 3, or is it The New iPad, or is it THE NEW Ipad, or is it iPad 2012, or is it iPad LTE, or is it iPad Wi-Fi, or is it iPad 2S, or is it iPad 3rd gen, or is it …, and it is not fair to be doing that, you are stupid, you are not a normal person, so stop calling names you big meanie haters because it is hurting our feelings.
