Today Apple's iPad officially goes on sale internationally in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland and the UK. Japan was the first to receive the iPad, opening earlier this morning in a frenzy for the new gadget, as posted by the Wall Street Journal.
The device was announced back in January, and later hit store shelves in April, selling over 300k in the first day. Despite the device only being available with WiFi, it managed to sell 1 million units in 28 days, and shortly after release date of the WiFi + 3G model was made available on April 30th.
Although the device had some issues shortly after launch, where consumers were having difficulties using the WiFi on some routers and USB charging issues, the iPad appeal has been strong with consumers, outselling Macs 2:1.

ReplyI have a feeling that they're going to run out quickly - web orders in the UK have been pushed back to "June", and there's a 3-4 week wait for the case.
"The iPad had a strong start in some of its first international sales today with initial reports of very long lines in Japan. Over 1,200 queued at Apple's Ginza flagship store for its 8AM opening. Lines had started as early as Wednesday in Japan and have been matched by similar lines in Australia and Europe. Japanese pre-order numbers aren't known, but over 900,000 allegedly ordered the tablet in Europe."

Seems to be popular...

Yes, because "June" is so far away.....
After seeing the iDiots on the news who had bought them and the people who work in the Apple stores who are clearly hypnotized, I wept for nerdery as we know it..
£429 for the base model? No thanks...
I STILL can't think of a use for this either. It doesn't fit anywhere and it doesn't have a proper keyboard. Shiny white box syndrome?

Win7 or a linux based version of this would rock but otherwise .........Noooo. Ipad is a fail otherwise.
It seems like a pointless gadget regardless of the OS. To turn your trolling on it's head, I'm sure if Microsoft released something like this it would come under a great deal more scrutiny. But that's my views as an outsider to all this e-thugging between MS/Apple/Linux fanboys.

So are you talking about vaporware such as the Courier or the Slate, which looks like it has scrapped Windows 7 as the OS? Or are you talking about convertible laptops/tablets that have been around for the last 10-15 years? iPad has succeeded where all others have failed and failed miserably. Take your trolling somewhere else.

Incorrect.
Now you could say:
Marketing has succeeded where all others have failed and failed miserably. Take your trolling somewhere else.
The iPad itself still sucks.

So marketing a product has nothing to do with selling a product? Regardless of the reason, the iPad is selling well. So it is a success. And once it becomes available in more countries, it will be an even bigger success. I respect people who just say they hate the device, hate Apple, or that the iPad is too expensive (which I don't think it is) or doesn't fit their needs. But to say that it's not succeeding when all signs say that it is, is ridiculous.

Marketing has everything to do with the success of a product. The iPod would have never been what it is without marketing...afterall it was just another mp3 player.
Tablet PCs could have been more popular if MS had done some marketing for them...but they left that to the OEMs like HP etc etc and they didn't do a very good job.

Coulda, shoulda, woulda but didn't. Don't discredit Apple for doing what others didn't. iPad is a success. Bottom line. Whether you like the product or not.
The prices are absurd.
That about sums its up
i wil be be really surprised if there are good sales in the UK..
Haha, be prepared to be surprised then!
Those are excellent prices from Apple
I think you might be able to add another 500K to the iPad tally in just the UK after this first week of availability. Would that be considered good in your eyes?

Let me correct that for you

You are far too kind...

Where are you getting those stats from ? I guess I was hoping that sales would be low so that they would bring the price down

They will come down once the market becomes saturated and sales slow. Good sales just means the product line will continue which will mean refreshes with features.

Just a guesstimate. I think Apple could have easily taken 250K pre-orders for the iPad in just the UK. And I think sales of another 250K this weekend wouldn't be difficult.

another bargain by apple

Apple doesn't make bargains if they did make bargains it would expensive ones - oh wait they already do make expensive toys which are controlled by Apple ..
I've got my UK iPad and love it!
Since Hulu was the big thing for the iPad in USA, what is the big thing for the iPad in other countries, since Hulu doesn't let other countries watch their content?
Mine arrived yesterday. Loving it so far.
Seems to be worth the higher price. I've bought 'cheap'before and regretted it.
Looks like the DSGi group (PC World and Currys) have exclusivity for 60 days into the launch. I would never buy anything from such a terrible retailer!
I would not say no if was offered one for free or really cheap but I would not pay anywhere near that much for such an device.
anyone know if they have sold out in london?
Whats amazing is that everyone I speak to are saying "Yeah, it looks nice but I don't really understand the point of it".
The device is selling extremely well, so thats a lot of people spending their money on something that they consider pointless

lots of people watch Glee......
I think there's no doubt about it, its a cool device. As an iPhone user though I can't just see the point.
I'm also too much of a fan of being able to do what I want to do. Not what a computer wants to let me do.

Actually Sydney was the first store open, it opened at midnight, and Aussie time is ahead of Japan.
Fedex stopped updating mine when it reached the US.... I hope to have it by the tmie I get home tonight.
My sister called me and she just get hers. She went to the Apple Store at 6am (they were opening at 8) and got a 16GB wifi

A friend there bought one. He misses Flash when surfing (says Youtube HD doesn't work either), a camera and says the speakers are pretty weak bass-wise but overall he's happy with what it does do.
After I've toyed with one for a grand total of 10 minutes (a co-worker bought one while he was in the states a few weeks back), I had to conclude I simply do not have any use for an iPad--that's essentially what it boils down to.
The only way I'd get one is if it sold for $100, not a penny more--that's about the only thing that could ever convince me. Otherwise it's a shiny white toy what will collect dust after the novelty wore off (which it pretty much did after the 10 minutes I've spent with it--this does not bode well). I felt it was just too goofy to be particularly useful to me. I couldn't even find a position in which I could sit and use this comfortably for that amount of time. I felt the size/weight made it an impractical oversized iPod Touch. Not that I'd be the first one to make that comment...
I think thats funny how there is always a Hulu image on the iPad in Neowin posts. Poking at the limitations of the device much?
iPad doesn't (currently) work with Hulu. The "Hulu app" is due out this month (May) but something tells me it is going to be pushed back.
a must for every apple fan ! bcos everyone else knows ipad is way too expensive for what it is, a netbook or even a laptop or ipad with no keyboard or real OS, that's a tough one /sarcasms/
My netvertible has more functionality and was $375 on Newegg.
I think a lot of people realize that if you have issues with apps or the OS on a netbook it can cost them money to get it fixed plus it runs windows which some people are hesitant about. The iPad takes those issues away for a LOT of users. Not you or me I guess cause we are happy to put up with the issues that a netbook and windows brings...

Congrats on your purchase of yet another cheap, crappy little netbook. To pay that sort of price for the same exact apps you have on your home PC just so you can use them anywhere on a dinky little screen using half-assed touch controls is absurd.
See what I did there? Now enjoy your ghetto wintoy and quit bitching.
I have mine (Received on Thursday) wasn't exactly sure what use I was going to have for it since i have an iPhone 3GS and a 13" MacBook Pro... Its amazing, I love it! its so snappy, battery life is amazing! Browsing websites on it is awesome, also Citrix and RDP are really, really good! im impressed!
So you paid that amount of money for the Ipad without knowing before-hand what you would use it for? You just needed to have the newest Apple product. Who says that marketing does not work.
Happily Belgium stays spared of this ****.
