While not an obvious subject for Neowin front page news, I'm posting this news here as I think it represents major change in the mobile data market.
At the moment Microsoft is making comparatively minor inroads into the telephony market with Windows Mobile 2003, in both Pocket PC Phone Edition and Smartphone iterations. Such devices include the xdaII / mdaII / i-Mate etc and SPVs. The maker of all of these is a company called HTC, an OEM from the Far East that may be unknown to the majority of the users of its phones which are sold with carrier branding by the likes of Orange and o2 in the UK. I think what was needed was a major, consumer-known, phone manufacturer to get behind Microsoft to force carriers to bring MS-based OS smartphones to market.
Then along came Motorola with the MPX200 which is a simply fantastic mobile phone. which has really helped to sell the idea of smartphones in many markets.
The reason I'm posting is this: With two new phones coming out from Motorola, the MPX100 and MPX220 (click for some fantastic pictures over at CoolSmartPhone.com), are you interested in a Windows Powered mobile?
For instance, the MPX220 is slated to have:
- GPRS and WAP for browsing, email and over the air updates
- Bluetooth (as any phone worth it's salt does)
- an integrated 1.3 mega pixel camera
- speakerphone
- 64 meg of ROM
- J2ME for downloadable apps and games
- sync with Outlook (calendar, contacts and email)
