Ask the Outlook.com team anything, they want to hear from you!

A few months back Neowin and the Hotmail team hosted an open call for questions about Microsoft's primary email platform. The team is back and is wanting to answer your questions about their newest service, Outlook.com.

Outlook.com was launched early last week and is already off to a great start with sign-ups hitting 1 million in six hours and your initial feedback has been highly positive

The team will be answering just about anything as it is an open forum but know that while they do love Neowin, they can’t put their jobs in jeopardy for us by discussing future plans.

The group is also looking for feedback, as they want to hear both sides of the coin for user experience. The only way to improve the service is to address your constructive criticism; so if you have had any issues so far, make sure to share them (politely) in the thread so the team can tackle your concerns.

The last time around we hit close to 200 questions, let's see if we can top that this time around as we engage with Outlook to learn more about the service but more importantly, help Microsoft shape the direction the platform heads in the future to make it the most cohesive experience on the web for all users.

Ask your questions here: Ask the Outlook.com Team Anything!

are you going to create a tutorial page for all those that rushed in to create a new outlook.com account and not cannot merge information with their previous accounts?

I'd love to have a screenshot of an iPhone/iPad Outlook configuration parameters. I know it can be done by EAS, but it would be nice having like a tutorial/guide for doing this.

I've had the same hotmail address since something like 2001, but now that I've clicked the try outlook.com the page in firefox just freezes with the busy cursor.
However IE works fine. but.. I don't want to switch browsers just to login.
Is there any way to get back to hotmail?
Thanks

Yes! all you have to do is log in using IE and click the gear (aka Options) icon and select "switch back to hotmail"

I don't see why you don't want to switch back to IE! Version 9 & 10 are the best browsers I have used so far..

cant' send a message to any friends through web messenger!

I can't send any message using web messenger because it says that I can't send a message to a blocked friend on messenger, however those friends I can try to send message to, are not blocked. Actually I can message with them on windows messenger w/o any problem. This problem started when I converted to outlook.com!

any help will be appreciated!

I think notifications are miserable.
Here, Microsoft could really learn from Apple Mountain Lion
Moreover, I think touch is rubbish, even though MS has done a little out of it, with a touch function, it is still miserable
At the same time there should be an opportunity to syncronicere mobile us as android and iphone without 3-party applications

Does limiting the account password to 16 characters mean you are not properly hashing and salting it or is this just a legacy limitation? Are you eventually going to allow more than 16 characters for the account password?

I have some People Hub questions and suggestions. People hub for the most part is identical on WP7.5 and Win8 so the same would apply to those also.

Social network integration has one major flaw. Let's say I have 250 people in my Facebook friends and I now have all 250 of them in my People Hub. Out of the 250 friends I would only like to see 20 of them. The only option is to place the 20 contacts into a group instead of choosing the 230 contacts I would rather have removed from my People Hub completely. At this time my People Hub is cluttered with Facebook pages that I follow, I know I will never in my lifetime want to contact a single Facebook page. I have just dealt with it on my phone but now that It's going to be the same on my soon to be new OS and my preferred personal E-Mail I would love the option of hiding hundreds of contacts that I would rather not have to sift through.

Contact editing is another problem I have been frustrated with. I know it might be suppressing to some but I have many friends in their 20's and 30's who refuse to use things like Twitter, Facebook and G+. For these individual's I have to add them into my People Hub myself. Everything about creating and editing contacts works fantastic except for the fact that I can't add a picture of the individual. On my WP I can place a picture but it only shows on that phone. It would be nice if we could add a picture for contacts that we both create and import. On a side note I have no clue if a Facebook or other similar contact can override a contact that I have created on Hotmail. I have yet to actually use the cleanup feature.

Calendar social integration has been great other than I get spammed about people's birthday's. Most of my problems with the calendar would be fixed if we could remove contacts we don't care to have in our People Hub.

My last item has to do with the new @ outlook.com and alias. I was able to get my name @ outlook.com. I made it an alias as I have used my @ hotmail.com for around 9 years or so. I might have missed it but I would love to have the option to make the @ outlook.com my main account and change my old @ hotmail.com to an alias so it will still function as intended for the hundreds of web sites I have used it on.

You can create groups, you know

They should had allowed @Hotmail.com & @Live.com account holders time to claim there @Outlook.com account. Example: me@Live.com claim me@Outlook.com

My email address xyz@live.com is not available @Outlook.com

Are there plans to release a Live/Outlook Messenger for Android devices? Also are you going to allow people to get their folders on Outlook.com on Android devices?

Is there any way to add outlook.com accounts to MS Outlook? I like all my accounts in one place and that isn't via a web page.

I want to know if some of the features of outlook.com are going to make their way to the win8 app (and other apps in general)... specifically the flagging of messages and categories.

Are the domains "live.com" and "hotmail.com" ever going to be changed to simply "outlook.com"? I'm specifically referring to email accounts. Instead of making an alias for my "live.com" account, will there ever be a time when Microsoft will just have a consistent domain for consumer email (i.e., outlook.com)?

I like that interface so much that I am tempted to switch from gmail hehe. But the work is too huge. I do not feel to switch all my contacts and emails to outlook

Ask them to take over the Windows 8 Mail app and add in pop support, filtering, etc

POP support isn't coming. They do have 3 months to add features to the Mail app before general availability though.

Very nice! I checked the thread and my question about retaining SkyDrive's 25GB allotment has been already asked, I hope the Outlook.com team will address that.

It worked for me when I renamed my account?

Someone else said he lost 18GB when he switched to @outlook.com? I don't know if I'll be using all 25GBs but I don't want to lose any of it either :-(

Let me say two things -- one, I love the redesign. Two, PLEASE PUT IN TWO FACTOR AUTHENTICATION.

If I can do it for my World of Warcraft account, I should have it for my email account. Given that MS is going to use a WLID for all its properties and heavily in Windows 8 for "cloud" services, it's important to be able to lock that down in a meaningful and easy way. I'd love an "Authenticator" app like I have for Battle.net, but I'd be just as happy getting a text message confirmation on my cell phone.

A "one time use" code is really not sufficient here, and it's really quite tedious as well.

So really, a plea -- REAL two factor authentication either by app, text message, or even a token would be amazingly important for all of us and our security.

I use the Microsoft Messenger application on my macbook. When I sign into outlook.com it signs me out of the mac application. WHY?
