AT&T has 5.2 million iPhone activations in Q3

AT&T has been blessed by the iPhone once again, reporting that in just Q3 they have seen 5.2 million iPhone activations. This was the largest number of activations that AT&T has ever seen in a single quarter for Apple's phone, with Q2 seeing 3.2 million iPhone activations, a full two million shy of the current quarter, CNET reports.

Granted, Apple's iPhone 4 came out just days before the start of Q3, which would contribute to the large number of activations, but they weren't all from past iPhone users. AT&T says that at least one fouth of all iPhone activations came from new users. Also, the overall percentage of subscribers who use smartphones is up to 57.2%. One year ago, that same number was at just 42%, so it is obvious that people are shifting to the smartphone world and that these devices are becoming more common among users.

Apple reported early this year that worldwide use of the iPhone has doubled from the same period one year ago. As more users turn to smartphones, Apple's iOS stands strong among competitors and is a well respected and known brand. AT&T, in their quarterly fiscal report, stated that the total amount of smartphone activations for Q3 was over 8 million, and with the iPhone taking 5.2 million alone, that is a pretty impressive number.

Earnings in later quarters will show just how much of the iPhone activations were due to the release of iPhone 4. However, with one fourth being new customers there is no doubt that their user base is increasing at an exponential rate.

Probably because (some) people are thinking that with the Verizon addition, some current AT&T customers will jump ship over to Verizon, freeing up some network space on AT&T. Maybe.

Enough with the Iphone-activation-articles already!

I could do that for every type of phone!

The smartphone market is growing! no wonder every Q2 they have higher activations.

I'm pretty sure, Android activation is also growing. As well as Blackberry's activation and soon WP7 activations

/fail article!

I think this is great for the Smart Phone market. Strong competition will bring out the best smart phones at great prices. Microsoft has it's work cut out for them with WP7.

Double edged sword for everyone really. That % of overall subs using smartphones means that as people 'mature' and get more used to packing around what amounts to hand held, connected PC's, their taste will also evolve. Evolve as in recognizing there are other attractive options available to them besides AT&T and iStuff.

alright where in the article does it say if the "new users" where new AT&T users? it just says new users are those new AT&T users, new iPhone users, previous AT&T users that went to the iPhone, what is it? because its not in the article

Each iPhone requires an activation through Apple/AT&T which means 5.2 million new iPhone purchases were completed. The article does not talk about customers. However, I agree that some of those customers may have just bought refurbished phones or got replacements, but those numbers are typically insignificant since we are talking about a quarter, say maybe ~0.2 million.
