Battlefield 3 cheaters banned by the hundreds this week

While Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 may have captured a lot of the gaming headlines this week, it's closest rival Battlefield 3 is still in the spotlight. This week, developer Digital Illusions and publisher Electronic Arts are already making moves to keep the online multiplayer games free from cheaters and hackers. In posts made on the official Battlefield Twitter page, the developer said, "We take cheating and exploiting very seriously in Battlefield 3 and want to make it clear that it will not be tolerated."

As a result, DICE and EA have already taken measures to fix that problem. The Twitter page stated, "This week, we've banned hundreds of offending accounts and have stats-wiped accounts for exploiting (such as boosting)." It added in a later Twitter post, "We'll continue to be monitoring and taking action against the minority that doesn't respect the integrity of the game."

While there have always been cheating activity when it comes to PC versions of multiplayer shooters, it is not unknown for console players to find a bug or discover an exploit they can use in a multiplayer match. This kind of activity does indeed make playing online matches frustrating for some players, especially new ones who typically become cannon fodder for the cheaters. It will always be a continuing concern when it comes to games in this genre but hopefully better monitoring by both humans and anti-cheating apps will keep this kind of unfair activity down to a minimum.

I hate cheaters so much in games. It takes the entire fun out of it. You work hard to get good at the game and then people that don't put effort in make it all jacked up to where I don't even want to play the game anymore.

Like cheating in real life sports, you should get beat down for it because people are there to do their best within the defined rules of the game. It's a waste of time, effort, and fun when cheaters get in the mix.

And saying it should be okay to use exploits is stupid also. It ruins the entire game and just mentality of it. It's like if all baseball players kept taking the pitchers chalk bag and fake like it's the baseball and then get someone out by hiding the real ball. Sure you can do it, but if everyone started doing it, it would ruin the game.

I don't know how you can call yourself a respectable human being if you have to cheat at anything in life. Just makes you out to be a loser regardless and shouldn't be any place in the world for you.

I don't believe people should get banned for "boosting" because they arnt actually hacking or cheating, its just a glitch they have found.

Cheaters / Hackers are people who run around with auto aim and wallhack on, they are the ones who should be banned.

I don't get the mindset of cheaters, because if those bugs get fixed, those very same cheaters are going to find their scores drop, and them getting their asses handed to them by actually genuinely good players Idiots. "Wow, Battlefield 3 is out ... I can't wait to spend my money on something I won't actually play properly" ... morons.

I really don't get the mindset of these cheaters. Surely they realise they WILL get caught? Getting to wave your tiny ePeen around as some equally ill-equipped nerds really isn't worth the cost of losing access to your expensive new game...

It's not hard. Those people like to win and are ready to do whatever it takes. Those are the same people who super jumped in Halo 2 and never got banned for it. Those are the same people who create a group of 5 ruthless level 85 to gank a single level 25 in WoW. Those are the same people who spawn camp the opponent team for 20 minutes instead of scoring the last flag in a CTF game.

They don't care about the game. They don't care about fun. They don't care about fairness. They don't care about anything but the win and ownage.

Win over anything including the spirit of the game.

I personally perfer to lose a fair game than winning a game by exploiting bugs.

Take that, cheaters! Though I don't really support banning those boosting glitch people.. I mean, yea it's cheating in a way, but it's not really their fault for finding these "glitches"

So I hope the boosting is indeed a different thing like Xionanx said above

If it is fun for them to "play" the game that way, then they must be really miserable... Personally, what I enjoy most about games like these is to get rewards for achievements, not just have high level and play for nothing.

Don't see why anyone should get banned for glitches in the game. That isn't hacking.

That's some weird logic. So, no one should get arrested if they get into my apartment and take stuff just because I happen to leave the door open for a minute?

And that's a dumb analogy that isn't even relevant. How about if I leave my stuff out in the street and someone takes them?

If a glitch exists you simply patch it and reset the stats for those that abused it not ban them.

I'm glad you're not the one making these games.

Actually, if you leave your door open and someone walks into your house and takes something:
A) Depending on your insurance coverage your SOL
B) Depending on your state no charges may be filed as you cant prove unlawful entry, breaking and entering, or theft by taking. So yeah, that logic is actually pretty solid. lol

Exploiting an in game mechanic to gain an edge is something gamers have been doing since games were first created. The fact that they left this kind of exploit in the game, and then started banning people for using it is just lame.

However, the "Boosting" being referenced here is probably more in line with people using shared save game copie and/or hacks to "Boost" their stats without actually playing the game. This practice is common on the Win360 boards.

That would be called "unsecured and unattended" which in your case, if anything did get stolen would be your fault.

No ... your street one was a dumb one. For starters, leaving your door open would be a mistake. Bugs left in games are mistakes. They work hard, but they miss things sometimes. Leaving your stuff on the street has nothing to do with his post.

How could it be someones fault if someone else stole their stuff? Sure, being careless and leaving a front door wide open is not a good idea, but that doesn't excuse theft.

The person at fault is still the thief.

Exploiting a game's bug is against the TOS.

I don't own this game or cheat in them, but I do agree. Banning someone, in any game, is just stupid, if its due to an in game bug. Maybe they could just remove whatever the person gained from it, but banning is just wrong.

I know Everquest used to do that to players. There would be bugs in the game and they would ban all the players, and not fix the bug. Its just ridiculous.

I find it sad so many here think people should be banned over something that was created by the game author. And how is the person to even know whether its a bug, or working as intended.

A person would have to have pretty low morals to ban someone over something like that. They could just remove anything the person gained by doing it, or roll back the stats on the player... NOT ban them for the game authors mistakes.

What is "boosting" ?

There's an "exploit" with engineers in that you get a friend to fire on your remove controlled thing, and then you repair it. Gives you tons of points without really doing anything.

A similar exploit with assault...shoot a teammate on a hardcore server so he dies, revive and heal him. Tons of free points there and they don't even get a death on their statistics.
