Bill Gates Again Tops List of Richest Americans

According to Forbes magazine's 25th annual ranking of the 400 richest Americans, Microsoft founder Bill Gates ($59 billion) is the richest person in America for the 14th year in a row, followed by investor Warren Buffett ($52 billion) – the pair's fortunes each grew by $6 billion in the past year. Casino magnate Sheldon Adelson ($28 billion), head of Las Vegas Sands, and software tycoon Larry Ellison ($26 billion), chief executive of Oracle, remain at spots 3 and 4, respectively. "The collective net worth of those listed on the 400 this year rose $290 billion to $1.54 trillion," Forbes said.

For the first time since 1989 there are no members of the Walton family, descendants of Wal-Mart founder Sam Walton, in the top 10. The Waltons were displaced by Google co-founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page, who came in at 5th place with fortunes of $18.5 billion, and brothers Charles and David Koch, who run Koch Industries and are each valued at $17 billion, earning them 9th place. Investor Kirk Kerkorian was the biggest gainer on the list, his fortune rising by more than $9 billion in the past year to $18 billion and moving from 26th to 7th place. Of the top 400 richest Americans, Forbes said 270 are entirely self-made, 74 inherited their wealth and 39 are women.

Actualy, that was true until very recently, but Carlos Slim of Mexico has taken the crown with a net worth of $67.8 billion. There should be a law that says you're only allowed to have so much money. Too much power in one man's hands is not a good thing.
EDIT: Sorry, Simlupost.

Then again, Bill Gates donates this money, so maybe it's not TOO much of a bad thing.

That wouldn't really be fair. It would be punishing people for becomeing successful.

u got a point... but after a certain ammount of money... it's rather pointless to keep getting more just to get more.. know what i mean?

cause really, i figure 1billion is WAY WAY more than enough ANYONE could ever use in there lifetime (and probably a generation or two as long as you dont go buck wild with the money)... and these guys have WAY more than that.

me personally though i could care less to have say more than about 100million (maybe even 20-30million) or so in cash... cause with that probably anyone could probably buy whatever they wanted with a crap load left over... i mean if i was super rich all i would really want is fast cars/fast motorcycles and then i would goto race track and play around with em cause nothing is better than a adrenaline rush overall if you ask me and then i could get a decent house.... so for me 100million would be well more than enough ... reason i said 100million is cause with that much you could buy even the most expensive cars and still have a alot of your money left over for insurace.

cause if i had bill gates money i would probably be donating alot of it to people that need food etc etc.... i would not give a dime to ANY of those cancer foundations as if you ask me i think it's all bs... there never going to find a so called "cure" cause then everyone would be out of business and a crapload of people would be out of a job.

Not really. Not if you use it well.

That's true, but Bill isn't really trying to spend all that money. He's probably saving it up for his kids and charity. Everyone would like $100 million, y'know, so would I. Not going to happen though, at least, not often, so when someone with this and more of this kind of money comes along, why not have them do some amazing things?

Not sure why you think cancer is a conspiracy, but whatever, I suppose anything can be a conspiracy. Bill Gates does donate his money to people who need food.

well i should have said... "after a certain point money is rather useless "if" your using it for yourself" .. thats what i should have said ;)

---------------

as for cancer conspiracy... if you ask me it just makes sence... cause it's true that if there where a "cure" that pretty much all those cancer places would be out of business = alot of people would be out of a job.

cause supposedly from what i read in the book i mention below there has already been people who cured cancer naturally and can cure diabetes etc without drugs or surgery etc etc... i aint researched it myself but according to that book it's true..... cause supposedly he has alot of documents that prove it... but like i say i never looked into it in detail myself so im just going by what it says in that book.

but anyways you should read the book "Natural Cure They Dont Want You To Know About" that pretty much sums up how corrupt the FDA/FTC and the drug industry is in general! ... read it from start to finish if you ever get around to it... good read.

so reguardless if the cancer thing i was saying is right or wrong... i think they sorta got a monopoly on health care industry

I think it's time Bill open-sourced Windows.

And I think you need to open source your brain because it seems to not be working right. Microsoft is a business, their revenues are based on sale of proprietary software and protocols. Redhat and Novell are barely getting by on the support contracts for their distributions of Linux, that revenue model could never work for MS or support all the RD they put into their products and pay those over 70,000 employees world wide.

i can't even imagine what a billion dollars is. sure, i could blow a million with a few expensive toys, investments, and givings to charities, but a billion....that just blows my mind.

The scary thing is that the Google boys are making money at the fastest rate ever...

Brin and Page each more than quadrupled their worth from $4 billion in 2004 to $18 billion in 2007! There's no indications they (or Google) are slowing down, they could quadruple again in 3 more years and become #1 and #2 in the world!

Google will slow down eventually in a year or two for sure...because once there was this only company(google) for famous online products, but now there are lot of competitiors like yahoo, microsoft building more than google does..but need to wait an year for those products to be RTM

LOL... You know, America isn't the right term for the United States of America. By saying America, you could be also mentioning Carlos Slim, Mexico's and the World's most rich person.

EDIT: According to wikipedia, Forbes has not updated its calculations of billionaire fortunes. It does not plan to recalculate Carlos Slim Helú's wealth until next year.

Hi, I am a Mexican and I can tell you that Carlos Slim has a lot of investments, not only in Mexico, but also in USA, Canada and South America. So I am pretty sure all his NW is not because he's stealing stuff, but because he knows how to invest.

Alright, there you have it.
