Bill Gates still on top of Forbes' list of richest people in U.S. for 20 straight years

In May, Microsoft co-founder and chairman Bill Gates was given the title of richest person in the world by the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. So it's not exactly a surprise to learn that Gates is also on top of Forbes' famous annual list of the richest people in the United States.

The new Forbes 400 list has Gates' current net worth as $72 billion, well ahead of the number two person on the list, Berkshire Hathaway CEO Warren Buffet, who "only" has $58.5 billion. Forbes adds that Gates remains the richest person in the country even though he has given away $28 billion of his fortune, mostly to his own non-profit group the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Current Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, who will retire sometime in the next year, is number 21 on Forbes' richest U.S. citizens list, down from 19th place in 2012, with a net worth of $18 billion. Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen is 26th on the list this year, down from 20th place in 2012, with $15.8 billion.

Other major tech company executives on Forbes' list this year include Jeff Bezos, in 12th place with $27.2 billion in net worth, along with Larry Page of Google in 13th place with $24.9 billion, and Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg in 20th place (a big jump compared to his 36th place last year) with a net worth of $19 billion.

When we will understand that being this rich is not good for the rest? People blindly idolize Gates like he's a hero. Blindly cheering his TAX DEDUCIBLE donations. Blindly thinking that capital donations after a life of unethical enrichment is great while ethical surviving is lame.

Yeah, lets celebrate a man that has made many go broke and a system that requires many's impoverishment in order to have rich.

I like Bill Gates but what you say is on point. He's had to be cutthroat to be sitting where he is today. Most "nice" guys would never make the top 10 on this list.

Agreed. Yet, it's still better than having a half dozen yachts and thousands in TAX DEDUCTIBLE donations, or a major sports team and thousands of tax deductible donations.

Even Buffet was a shrewd business man that crushed many industries. Somehow his commitment to giving back to the future generations almost makes up for it.

Thats not making it up for it, thats perpetuating the cycle. It's an economical and moral validation of the unethical enrichment. An inverse Robin Hood.

Yeah cause if Bill Gates didn't do the donations for the tax reduction. He would be much poorer at this moment.
Him investing into your American youth is blasphemy. And spending most of his time on helping people in need is absolutely bogus too.

He only did it for tax deduction..... Dude get real, go outside and learn. Read!!

If you don't make the list, because you're short by a billion, does that make you a looser? I wanna be that looser :-)

Still these people worth is not even close to the one of people like J.P. Morgan, Rockefeller and Rothschild at the beginning of the 20th Century.

I'm not close either, but I'd trade savings accounts with him any day.

I would trade with "poorest" in that list without a blink.....

20 straight years? Maybe it's time he starts donating some of that money to charity.

There are a couple of responses:
Where have you been for the past decade or more?
Did you bother to read the article?
Or is this sarcasm indicated by the smiley face?

If Bill Gates really wanted to do the world good, he would personally buy up every Windows ME, Windows Vista, and Windows 8 install disk and bury them in the Nevada desert. Save the world from any of these OSs being installed on a PC ever again.

since that would be impossible as there are images and digital copies out there.....

Fed up with this crap.

Windows 8 is a high quality OS that is stable, reliable and efficient, unlike the poor-quality code that was ME and the buggy bloatware that was Vista.

Just because you don't like the new Windows 8 START MENU doesn't make it a bad OS.

Sigh.

I thought he'd been overtaken several times? Part of the problem with these lists is that they have very little credibility because they are based on guess work - it's very difficult to ascertain how much these people are actually worth. Whatever the case, he's clearly a very rich man.

They're talking about in the USA. He was overtaken a few times for richest in the world.

Yeah there was some oil tycoon in Mexico that trumped him years ago but then he regained top spot when Microsoft stock went up. He never left the US #1 spot though.

I think you mean Carlos Slim who's made\makes his money largely in the telecom industry and not oil. Oh and yes he's currently the world's richest man, but it does switch around between him and Gates from time to time based on their related company(s) stock prices.

Ah yes, that's right, thanks.

Yep! Add to the fact that Bill Gates has already given away billions of dollars in charity.

Carlos Slim lost that title end of last year to Gates.
