Bing Maps updated with Windows 8.1 preview; new food and health apps launched

The folks who are able or willing to download the public preview of Windows 8.1 will also be able to check out a new version of the Bing Maps app for Windows 8, along with two all new apps from the Bing team: Food & Drink and Health & Fitness.

The Bing blog has the details on the updated Bing Maps app, which adds the Local Scout feature that was previously made for Windows Phone. This will allow users to quickly find local places to eat, shop, park, bank and more. It will also offer recommendations if you sign into your Facebook account. You can also check the weather or even book a tablet at a restaruate without having to leave the Maps app.

The Food & Drink app from the Bing team offers quick access to tons of recipes, a wine encyclopedia, lots of food culture and tips and more. The app can even be accessed via motion gestures if the Windows 8.1 PC has a webcam. The blog states, "Now recipe pages can be turned with a simple hand wave in front of the computer or tablet’s camera using the gesture controls in Windows 8.1."

Finally, the Health & Fitness app offers trackers for users to check their health and exercise stats, info on food nutrition, tutorials on how to exercise properly and more. It offers a Symptom Checker as a reference guide, along with 3D maps of the human body. Again, these apps are available for people who download the Windows 8.1 upgrade.

I'm pretty sure these apps are all developed by the Bing division, while the apps we all want updates for are from the Windows division.

Hopefully the upcoming reorg will give us faster updates within the Windows division as well.

All these great modern Bing Apps not available for Windows Phone....
Finance, News, Weather, Sports, Travel and now the newly added Food & Drink and Health & Fitness... What a waste of opportunity

Got it just fine through the Windows Store, installed great on my Surface Pro. Up and running in about 30 minutes including download time.

Go to the link listed here on Neowin. You need to install a small kb update first.

Got it, thank you very much sir... kept waiting for the update to come like other RT updates

Same here, loving IE 11 Web GL and overall faster. There is now an option to never hide URL bar and gives you smaller tabs as well as I think the dropdown menu bug has been eradicated and tabs close faster on my Surface RT. Check for updates, there are a few for Surface RT actually a firmware update after the preview. Also, the preview seems to be missing the Kiosk Mode.

Also seems like they allow you to disable auto updates on RT.

Yup, on my Samsung Series 7 Slate... I just went to the 8.1 Preview site, downloaded the MSU file and ran it. It asked to download a Windows Update which it then installed and rebooted. After the reboot, it prompted to open the Store which I did and it started downloading and then installed the 8.1 Preview (it was about 2.5GBs, so it took a bit over 5GHz WiFi) and after installation, another reboot which then sat at the betta fish boot screen as it went from 0-100%. Upon completion, it took me through system setup, login with Microsoft account then voila, Start screen.

That was about 4 hours ago... I've been playing with it since.
