Bing Weather and Sports apps for Windows Phone 8 get big updates

While lots of PC owners were updating their rigs to Windows 8.1 on Thursday, Microsoft didn't forget about Windows Phone 8 users. On Thursday, the company issued big updates for two of its previously released apps for the mobile OS; Bing Sports and Bing Weather.

The official Windows Phone blog has the info on what's been added to each of the Bing apps. In the case of Bing Sports, the new version now adds coverage of over 30 more sports which includes NASCAR, LPGA, Champions League Soccer, tennis and rugby. The app now has the leading teams and players when a sports fan views a particular league or team page. Finally, the app also has options so that a sports fan can keep track of the news from his or her favorite player or sport.

Since the weekend is upon us, it's good that Microsoft updated the Bing Weather app for Windows Phone 8 users right about now. Some of the new features include support for viewing weather updates from the lock screen and a revamped Live tile that shows what the current conditions are, along with wind speed and if there is any precipitation in a local area. The other side of the Live title shows a five day forecast for the same location.

The new version also include some additional weather data like the UV index and what the weather history of a region was like. Finally, as we are approaching ski season (heck, it's snowing today in Denver) so Bing Weather now includes what the snow and weather conditions are like at a number of ski resorts.

Bing weather radar is useless. Shows too much of the past and stops nearly an hour short of current conditions. Fix it, dammit!

In the hourly forecast, there is no wind indicator for speed or direction. This would be a serious feature for any of us that live on the ocean. Been suggesting this to them in feedback section since day one. See Weather Channel phone app for that feature, it is fantastic.

That's because wind speed/direction forecasting is more error-prone than other factors. Sometimes, clear skies have gustier winds than overcast and precipitating days. They do present morning/evening wind indicators in the detailed Day views -- but the Hourly line-items should get restylized (cuz it's hideous).

Totally agree... this is the sexiest weather app ... though I hope the next update brings live tile customizable options (like the Weather Flow app) where you can choose the view you want to display on the tile and maybe have a Bing background image option.

I like this iterative approach to keeping things updated. I think Microsoft finally gets the mobile and "app" space a bit better.

What do you mean 'finally'... they've known this for a while hence transitioning into a 'device and services' company. Apps and services are constantly updated and cross-platform so they know what they're doing. :-)

Finally! As in it took them a year to get bing apps on windows phone and the other apps they did release they never updated. It was like pulling teeth to get even skype support caught up to what they were releasing every 2-3 months on android and ios.

So yeah, finally
