Briefly: Apple says Leopard won't be delayed

Carve out another notch in the loss column for Taiwanese-based DigiTimes, which on Friday reported that Apple's next-generation Leopard operating system would be delayed till October. Jupiter Research analyst Michael Gartenberg later spoke to Apple regarding the matter and was told the report is incorrect. "Just spoke with Apple who confirmed the reports are wrong and Leopard is still scheduled to ship in this spring as they previously announced. The rumor mill is wrong again," the analyst wrote on his blog site. DigiTimes had said that Apple would push Leopard's release out till October in order to bolster dual boot support for rival Microsoft Corp.'s Windows Vista operating system.

Of course I'll be getting Leopard even though I see not many compelling reasons to. There's been no mention or revelations about the "top secret features" from WWDC 2006.

Im seriously considering getting a Mac for the first time when leopard gets released (probably a MacMini). I been using windows since win98 and feel its time for a change.

I've often thought the same but I think the saying applies, "the grass is always greener on the other side."

There are just as many downsides to Apply as there is MS.

I am Windows user since 3.11 version and you want it or not, I am going to change. If it won't be Mac OS X, so Linux will be just fine.

Again, June 12 and later would be considered late spring. I'm sure Apple would at least want to have Leopard GM out before then so they can give loyal ADC developers access to the final code to test and finalize their applications before WWDC. This will also give Apple a chance to work out any possible glitches or compatibility issues and have a 10.5.1 update by WWDC. Another thing, June will be the month of the iPhone, I am sure Apple wants to spread those major releases so each product can have their time in the spotlight.

My guesses:
Mid April: Final Cut Studio 6 (possibly announced, demoed at NAB and released at a later date)
Late April or early May: Mac OS X Leopard along with iLife and iWork updates, possibly new consumer hardware updates
June: iPhone
June: WWDC - discussions on Leopard, Leopard Server and iPhone, new Pro hardware updates

Isn't the fast cat the cheetah?

I didn't say fastest, just fast. I think a leopard is still pretty fast. From Wikipedia:

Although it is not unusual for a leopard to be mistaken for a cheetah due to their frequently overlapping ranges, they can actually be easily distinguished. The leopard is heavier, stockier, has a larger head in proportion to its body, and has rosettes rather than spots. It also lacks the ring pattern that marks the end of the cheetah's tail and the black, "tear-drop" markings that run from the inner corners of the cheetah's eyes to the corners of its mouth. Additionally, cheetahs run much faster than leopards do and do not climb trees, except while they are cubs, whereas leopards are excellent climbers.

As others have pointed out, spring lasts until June 21, so it does make sense that it will coincide with the first Tuesday of WWDC. It would certainly be a nice surprise for all those who attend WWDC.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, now I recognize my Neowin now Apple Bashers will stop and say "hahah they delay it because Vista is better"
I'm still thinking it's shipping June 12. It's a tuesday and it's WWDC, so why not !

I have absolutely no idea what you just said. "Apple bashers" wouldn't say that, as it's not being delayed. Hence the whole "this rumor is not true", thing.

And, "now I recognize my Neowin." - What?

I recognize Neowin - They apologize for quoting a bad source. The source didn't make sense since the beginning, so they actually shouldn't have posted this new.

Apple bashers DID bash Apple because of this. Look in the previous news which says that Leopard is going to be postponed because of Vista, it's hilarious. It was obvious that the rumor was not true, but some took it literally.

Actually there was more people saying they didn't believe the story than people bashing Apple. I was one who made a small joke about it, but made it pretty clear it was a joke and that I didn't believe the story.

And Neowin has posted more than a few stories that ended up not being true or only had a small part of it right. Other sites reported this story also. Don't make it sound like Neowin was the only one to post it becayse they wasn't. Honestly it's not Neowin, it's the person who makes the actual post. Sometimes people aren't sure if a story is true or not, but will post it anyway to see peoples reactions and most of the time the poster makes it clear it's just rumor.

Try again

Yeah, other sites reported that also, but the other sites are not necessarily as big as Neowin. For such a big site who posts like 5 news a day, Neowin has a very good accuracy rate in fact. It's just that they should read more carefully some news to see how it doesn't make sense.

Maybe Neowin should add a new section called Rumor for things they are not sure, but then again, it'd be quite empty, as most of their news is accurate.

What I hate is that there's way too many rumors and hype considering Apple and nobody knows what's true or not, especially if you don't follow their stories often. It's bad for both sides : Apple fans make hype out of it, and Apple bashers ridiculize them.

"scheduled to ship "in" this spring"

Since June would be considered, late spring, I'm placing my bets on late April or the early part of May.

Thanks for the submission Tech_Dude_5000.
Sorry for the mistake guys, gotta be more careful with DigiTimes next time!
