Call of Duty Elite to provide extra content for a monthly fee

Activision has announced the introduction of a new service that will act as a companion to the next Call of Duty game. Call of Duty Elite will provide players with exclusive maps and content, assuming they are willing to pay a monthly fee. The company has yet to decide how much to charge for the service, but executives are aiming for a lower price point than services such as Netflix.

The system will have elements of social networking included, which will be part of a smaller set of features offered for free. According to the Wall Street Journal, users will be able to meet up and play games against each other based on their likes, dislikes, and other attributes. Similar to Halo's online features, players can also analyse previous matches to work out what their best strategies were, such as which weapons were most effective.

Call of Duty Elite will be a risky move for Activision. While PS3 and PC users can play online for free, Xbox 360 owners have to fork out around £40 per year. Asking those users to pay an extra monthly fee on top of their current subscription could provoke a serious backlash. On the other hand, the series has its fair share of dedicated fans, who may see the extra features as a bonus worth paying for. If the service takes off, it could set a dangerous precedent for other franchises eager to keep their users hooked in.

Yet, that is the point. No one wants to pay extra for content, especially a monthly fee, for content they feel should have been released in the game to begin with. I am inclined to believe that the content is pre-developed and held onto for a couple months after the games release to make more money, but whatever, some are willing to pay for it, others are not. I won't be. Especially not for a game that is on a nearly 4 year old engine, re-hashing the same old crap they have been for years. Halo 2.0 all over again

I guess is BF3 for me..... didn't know what game to get next but after this, MW3 is out of the question.

The PS3 version of BO was half done and i payed full price for it, they are lucky i stuck by it. Now they want to sell me a game in its "beta" stage and to enjoy it fully i have to pay a monthly fee!?!?!?...... no thank you!

I was borderline with the DLC being put up in price, but it was alright for me since it came down to paying once and having forever. Now, getting extra maps and weapons that you have to pay monthly for? What if it's like the most CoD map packs, where you only really like one of the maps, and the rest are just... meh? I spend barely enough time to justify having the ones I do, but at least I definitively HAVE them.

I made up my mind a while ago. MW3 will be an afterthought. My November is bookmarked for Skyrim.

This made me Lol. Even with the obvious greed that is motivating the COD games now, many players will buy this service, which has helped to kill the free amazing Mods that used to engulf these type of games. Kudos to Activision for their successful business however!

This is ridiculous. There's no way they could actually make this worth your while. You'd want at least a new map every couple week, plus weapons and other content. We all know it'll be reduced down to 'exclusive' skins or tags eventually. Plus the CoD games have gotten stale and boring. I really disliked black ops and regretted paying 30euro for it! I think they've milked that cash cow dry and them some! I won't be buying the next one, i'm sick of dlc which is stuff they should just be releasing in patches for free, like they did before. Activision can blow me! And they wonder why piracy is on the rise! Who's gunna pay for half a game!

Why should they release extra content for free? You buy the game as-is at the time you pay for it. Anything extra is fair game to charge more money for.

You're an idiot if you think they're removing content from the original game and making you pay for it later; they're creating NEW content that people can buy later if they choose to. Don't be so stupid and immature.

man this is insulting! ><" we consumer want to buy a fully 100% game not only half the content of it, COD is alraedy making mill what, they're not happy about it and want us to spend extra money to spend on just small stuf which in total will end up for them in mill still ><" this is bulll, if you make a game, make sure all content of the game is there not only partially and i'm not speaking wiht just MW3 alot of games these days seem to follow this tread can anybody explain why, other than a gettign-quick-rick-scheme for these muti-mill company.....

Will that's just a load of nonsense. They aren't taking content out of the game to sell through this service, they are making NEW content.

So stop trying to make this into a melodrama

I know it's completely optional, and a lot of people say you shouldn't compare the two games, but it's a risky move with BF3 round the corner as well.

Yeah....hard work....like DLC that contain 3 to 4 maps which we're already in the game. Sheesshhh...some people are just asking to be ripped off...

Childish speculation; Utter nonsense. There is nothing that suggests any of the DLC was originally planned to be in the game.

I take it you work for the Call of Duty team in Activision if you know which maps were originally supposed to be in the game? If not, then don't talk like you have a clue when you don't.

I've not paid a monthly fee for a game since SWG, I'm not going to get back in to that habit, especially when I originally shell out 110 CHF for the game (compared to SWG which was a lot less).

end of an era then, like net neutrality issues we'll end up with two types of gamers, those that can afford the best, and those that can't.

or those that just don't want to pay it?

And so it begins. I wonder how many players are willing to pay a monthly fee for CoD Elite to get extra content. It will probably be high, knowing the DLC also sold millions.

Teens will because it's elite.

Not a mandatory one no. This is fluff and non essential. So they will justify it that way.

The COD guys were over-ruled by the catfish guys (i.e. bottom line feeders).

True, they want us to pay $60 for the game plus monthly fees? They can kiss my ass.

But you don't have to pay the monthly fees. Just like DLC; you don't HAVE to buy it.

As are the map packs, until people you know get them and you're left behind. They win... they always do.
