Channel 10 Interviews Will Wright

Did you know that ants live in highly structured societies with very advanced means of communication? Yep, it's true. What does this have to do with Will Wright - designer of legendary games like SimCity and The Sims? A lot, actually. Did you know that ants live in highly structured societies with very advanced means of communication? Yep, it's true.

The Discovery channel had a documentary about ants last week. They poured cement into an ant colony (in Africa I think?) to map out all the tunnels and chambers. The resulting cement mold looked like a city, complete with ventilation and greenhouse-like chambers for growing food. Yes, *growing* food. Well, if you consider fungus a food, it seems ants like it.

How did they learn all that with their microscopic brains?

Ok, back to Will Wright...

They didn't toadeater. Ants rely on chemicals for communications, so their intelligence is more of a colony/hive intelligence, in contrast with a humans individual intelligence. There's a philosopher Pierre Teilhard de Chardin who in some broader works talks some length about how humans and ants both represent some height of complexity but developed in disparate ways.
