Google is still trying to convince people to try out its Chrome PC operating system. Earlier this year, the company revealed a major new update to the Chrome OS, along with a new Chromebook-based notebook and the Chromebox small form factor desktop, both from Samsung. However, it looks like there's been little interest in consumers for these kinds of products.
Today, in a post on the official Chrome OS blog, Google announced some new updates for the operating system. One of the big additions is allowing Chrome OS users to save files directly to a Google Drive account. The files can then be checked out on any Google Drive supported hardware product, including iOS and Android devices.
Yet another change concerns how the Chrome OS handles its apps. The blog states:
Notably, we made the apps list much more compact, so you can access your apps without interrupting your browsing experience. We also added a search box at the top of the apps list, which you can use like an omnibox to search the web, specific websites, or the apps on your computer.
Other additions include being able to add some custom wallpaper to your Chrome OS product, as shown above. There's also new audio support for USB and HDMI devices and some more sandbox security features.
Even with this software update, it remains to be seen if Chrome OS will finally be able to come out of the shadow of the Windows and Mac operating systems or if it will continue to be a highly niche PC OS.
