Cost of Exclusive GTA IV Episodic Content Revealed

Episodic content for GTA:IV is exclusive to the 360, how long for though, we don't know. What has emerged though, is the price Microsoft has had to pay for such a privilege. The measly sum of $50,000,000 is what has been stated by Kotaku, who source Take-Two's second quarter fiscal 2007 results conference call.

When asked for details on the move by analyst Evan Wilson, of Pacific Crest Securities, Take Two's CFO Lainie Goldstein disclosed both the sums involved and prospective release dates, "The first 25 is for the first episodic content package that's supposed to go out and that is in March of '08. That's why it moved into current because it's in the next 12 months. The second 25 will be for the second episodic, the episode, and that will be later in fiscal '08".

So a total of $25,000,000 for each of the two episodic content downloads. How much do you think they are going to cost for consumers?

everyone saying about oh noes GTA4 will be locked out from PS3, stuff consoles, it was consoles that locked the PC out of GTA3 for like 6months.

Consoles suck i hate em big n00bs like MS flash the cash and everyones falls into place, takes the mick. Wonder how long itll take GTA4 to be put on PC.

Worst part was i had to watch my mate playing it on his crappy PS2 for months, the gfx were far better on PC. Gfx prolly be better on the consoles at this point but PC will catch up soonish and crap on consoles from an extremely great hight.

You're all arguing here, and guess what!? PEOPLE WILL BUY THE GAMES NO MATTER WHAT THE COST!!! and the most games will be sold on the 1st 48 hrs..mark my words!!!

considering the size of the expansions.... which we are unsure of... 50 mill might not be much.. also relise... Take2 has to charge more... as it's essentually locking itself out of any other market for the expansions

Spot on, in an era where publishers are saying they can no longer afford to be single platform if they're going to be profitable then this seems a reasonable cost to block PS3 owners and maybe PC owners from the expansion packs. I'd like to see these at 1600 not 2400 personally.

This will help them sell more Xbox 360s to people like me. I was looking at getting either a PS3 or Xbox 360 for GTA IV and Resident Evil 5. Now it looks as if it will be an Xbox 360, unless prices on the PS3 fall significantly before October. Hopefully Xbox 360 prices drop some before then too.

I realize that Microsoft essentially prints its own money, but even for them, $50M seems like a lot for exclusive content for a game (essentially, extra levels). I guess I'm not entirely familiar with gaming economics (cost/return/etc). How much money did Take Two make from the previous incarnations?

I suppose this primarily has more to do with swaying potential 360 buyers more than anything else. I can't say it'll work for me--I have no problem waiting for it to be ported to the PC (I survived waiting for the previous ones), and I can't say I'm gonna miss that extra content either if they never include it.

So basically: To get the whole GTA IV, consumers will have to pay $70 for the "base" game, plus I'm guessing $30 to $40 for each "episode". So instead of getting everything for $70 like we should we'll have to pay more than $100 dollars for. Awesome...not.

7,142,858 copies of GTA need to be sold for MS to make up that $50 million (they make $7 per game sold on royalties)

Where do you get your facts at? Please provide a source--it''s hard for me to believe they will only make $7 profit per copy on a game that will sell for $60 per unit.

They don't need to sell that many copies. I'm sure they're counting on the game selling consoles which would net a lot more immediate income for the division.

I thought MS didn't make a profit on the console? Maybe you mean this game selling more consoles which is turn may help sell other games which they could make money on.

Getting GTA onto the 360 was probably the best move by Microsoft so far in the console race. It was Sony's Halo (Even though I dislike the game ^^)

Now not only have they got GTA but they also have the add-ons which the PS3 won't have. They've practically stole one of the major reasons for owning a PS3.

Microsoft will take a heavy loss on this and I think it will be totally worth it.

Sony's Halo is Metal Gear Solid. They will make this back, and th en some. From the sales of the game, to people buying the content.

They payed 50 million to get the extra content only to the xbox 360. Not 100% sure but perhaps getting the title to the xbox360 cost a bit as well. Maybe I'm wrong. I meant I can't see them breaking even with just the extra content although overall the game will be profitable. Once again maybe I'm wrong.

I just think this is a massive coup for microsoft.

my guess is 1200 points maybe 2400 but no more than that, but it'll depend on how many people get the game so they can estimate how many will buy/get the content

Well considering the time between each release date for the DLC, the episodic content must be quite large so 2400MSP seems likely...I really hope it's not that much though

I think GTA is one of those franchises that microsoft/sony really need to compete for. Its a decider for a lot of people. I don't think it'll ever be totally exclusive to one console again.

If the graphics are identical people will need something else to choose what console to get. I think somehting like this could be the decider. I've holded off from getting one of these consoels. Its little things like this that make Xbox360 more attractive

Wow, I never knew that people had become so sad here, dude GET A LIFE! My finger was down too long on the 'o' and it has gone on twice. Sorry for not proof reading, but I am sure you never make a single mistake on word.

I have to admit this gets to me too, and to be perfectly honest I don't think you accidently mistyped it, try holding a key down for a repeat of two, it's harder than it seems. Anyway I really don't care but I'm bored.
