CRIA brings Demonoid Down Again

Demonoid.com now reads: "The CRIA threatened the company renting the servers to us, and because of this it is not possible to keep the site online. Sorry for the inconvenience and thanks for your understanding." Demonoid's host had previously said that if it had any major hassle, it was likely it could pull the plug on the site. A message on the Demonoid IRC channel says: "Site is down, tracker is up. Expect the site to return, unless we hear otherwise from Deimos." Could this be the end of Demonoid?

CRIA is Canadian right? Did they not move their servers out of Montreal yet or what? How can they say anything to Demonoid if they did?

Edit: It appears they haven't moved. How the hell can they host here and not provide us access? That's complete and utter crap.

You know what, those f***ing governemt agencies that think they own the Internet can kiss all of our arses because they have no say on what goes on, on the Internet because no f***ing governemt agency or government controls the Internet or any portion of the Internet except for the websites that they control.

I say f*** the goverment and other agencies saying what we can and cant do on the internet because they have no authority on the matter.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH*drinks-some-water*HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I hate the damn f***ing government and agencies like the FCC or the CRIA for that reason, meddeling on what goes on where they have no control over it

Say... if you're in the USA, are you in support of being charged an Internet connection surcharge (are you in opposition to Net Neutrality) depending on your monthly activity (separate from your monthly ISP bill)? I didn't think so.

Let's face it, the governments have their purposes and reasons (else there would be global anarchy). They simply are obligated, as a whole, to balance the economic, social, political, and legislative aspects of properly governing a society. Without government involvement, there could be ISP monopolies, downloadable-content monopolies, and overall technology monopolies (imagine only having iPhones and AT&T ISP services available, and Microsoft or Yahoo or Google anything is blocked by the [elusive] iPhones firewall).

Well wishes to Demonoid whatever may be the case, you've given many of your users great things for which you deserve to recover.

*the sound of taps playing in the background*

And now for a moment of silence out of respect for our fallen comrades...

So long and thanks for all the seeds.

Nice one.

I'd hate to see Demonoid go...it's one of the best remaining torrent sites. Oh well, someone's probably starting a better one as we speak.

They're wimps at Demonoid. The CRIA doesn't have a case since downloading for personal use is not illegal in Canada, plus they already "blocked" Canadians from getting on there anyways..

Do you run a torrent site? If you did and were threatened by anyone to take it down, would you honestly fight it in court if it came down to that? It's pretty easy to call people wimps over the internet. It's not a very mature thing to do either.

It involves too much money and most of the people who run torrent sites just don't have very much money. It's either remove the site or move it somwhere where it's hard for anyone to touch you.

The only reason The Pirate Bay is still around is because it's hard to touch them because of where the servers are located. But it's not helping them at all that they constantly talk trash because of this. It'll come back to bite them in the ass one day. Their site is becoming filled with more and more fake torrents daily. The site isn't as secure as they want everyone to believe.

If you must post at least get your facts correct. It is illegal in Canada and always has been. In Canada we opted to impose a levy on recordable media rather than throw lawsuits around like our neighbours to the south.

It's not Demonoid being the "wimp" here, it's their host. Currently, it seems Demonoid is pushing to stay alive. It's just a matter of finding a good host ~

Whatever turns your cranks..... Sheessshh, some people. Its still not illegal for personal use. Law suits have nothing to do with it because it would be a criminal matter and not a civil one if it were illegal.

The only reason that the RIAA never brought a case forward in Canada is that they know they don't have any standing as well as the fact that Law suits are limited up here and the loser has to pay both side's court costs....

fOUB - TOO BAD youre not a prosecutor for the CRIA - 1st - who cares about Canada - 2nd Canada isnt the only country this applies to, and to call them wimps because they are taking crap for providing a service to alot of people FOR FREE - is simply idiotic. Canada ?!? LOL

Downloading might be legal in some countries.... distributing in most countries is still illegal however. Also the fact Canada probably has laws against aiding and abetting criminal activity which listing illegal files probably is.

Also this common argument of using for personal use is legal is hugely misunderstood... downloaded things usually have "usage agreements" which you are probably breaking - unless after you download and read the license agreement, you then don't keep the downloaded files.

Except I care about Canada as long as all the other Canadians here, and I'm sure plenty of others.

I bet you're one of those ignorant people who think that we Canadians live in igloos and hunt polar bears. Grow up.
