Datto acquires Backupify in cloud backup consolidation

Today, Datto has announced its acquisition of Backupify in a major consolidation in the cloud-to-cloud backup space. At present, terms of the deal have not been disclosed but it is understood that customers and partners of their respective companies will continue to be serviced as per usual.

For a number of years, Backupify has been a market leading solution for those wanting to backup their data hosted in Google Apps whilst also offering solutions for Salesforce and major social media accounts. Datto, founded in 2007, a year before Backupify, has built its strength in hybrid cloud backup solutions which would make this a complementary acquisition both in terms of technology and skill sets.

In an e-mail to customers, Rob May , Chief Executive Officer of Backupify, stated that:

This acquisition represents an exciting new beginning for Backupify. In most acquisitions, technology gets neglected, falls behind, or worse, gets shut down. None of that will happen here. Datto is an R&D company at heart, and the plan is to double the size of the Backupify engineering team, and accelerate our vision of supporting all your cloud apps.

A customer webinar with Rob May is scheduled to take place on Monday, December 15th at 1PM EST where participants can ask questions of and share comments. Registration is necessary and can be found here.

It remains to be seen how exactly the services of Backupify will be merged with those offered by Datto particularly given the market value of the Backupify brand with longer term customers.
