Dead Island PC dev version included "Feminist Whore" skill

It's been a bit of a shaky launch for the zombie action game Dead Island. The Steam PC version of the game from developer Techland and publisher Deep Silver was originally released earlier this week but it turned out to be an earlier developer build of the game, not the final retail version, that made its way to Steam customers. The publisher quickly updated the game to the final shipping build of Dead Island. However, people who have poked around the older developer version found something in the code.

As reported by Kotaku, members of Steam's message board posted up word that the code featured a in-game skill called ""FeministWhorePurna". The skill is thought to be an earlier name for the Gender Wars skill that is featured in the final shipping versions of Dead Island. In using that skill, the character Purna gains a damage increase against male characters.

Techland's brand manager Blazej Krakowiak said, "The line in question was something a programmer considered a private joke. The skill naturally has a completely different in-game name and the script reference was also changed." He added, "We deeply regret that fact and we apologize to all our customers or anyone who might have been offended by that inappropriate expression. The person responsible for this unfortunate situation will face professional consequences for violating the professional standards and beliefs Techland stands for."

Publisher Deep Silver also sent out its own statement, saying, "These unfortunate actions were of one individual at developer company Techland and do not in any way represent the views of publishing company Deep Silver."

Sounds like a hypocritical fascist company. If they fired every developer who used profanities in code we'd be back to the stone age. And someone dropped the ball way worse by pushing a dev build to Steam anyway...

i'll be ****ed off of the programmer is fired for calling this this talent "feminist whore" when the skill in question promotes violence against men.

I have to agree on this one... I guess it was the 'whore' part... but seriously, how do you know the coder didn't envision the character as a whore... of which, that is not wrong, only a character reference.

Mine should be arriving today, i'm hoping this is one of those rare moments where the console experience is better than on the PC.

I don't get the "face professional consequences" part, for what?
If that is offensive to anyone, then the whole development team behind Postal 2 needs to be hanged...

Have you watched tv at all, all men are stupid and childish in commercials. Women make all the decisions and men are really just boys who need supervision.

How different that can be in real life. My GF is incapable of making any decisions for herself, the only choices in her life she keeps for herself now are what she wears, but she keeps on asking for my input on that too. Try and give her a real choice, and she flounders, hesitates, and just waits for me to make a choice so she can copy it.

I'll bet if they'd developed an ability name that was derogatory toward men, nobody would have cared.

I disagree.. Can you give an example? Whatever it is, if it is just as derogatory as "Feminist Whore", I guarantee Techland and Deep Silver would be equally as apologetic.

Bring on the Misogynist Stallion perk!

I think it's rather pathetic that they'd punish a programmer for using a random name on a DEVELOPER BUILD, when I start coding things from scratch, I often use swear words as variable names, and change them later on.
If anything, deep silver should be liable for it because THEY are the idiots that released a developer build! Hypocrites.

How about chauvinistic pig?

What I'd like to know is why the current version (1.2.0 or whatever) doesn't run as butter-smooth as the originally launched version did. Both versions I'm seeing about 50% cpu usage, 70-80% GPU usage with everything maxed and 60fps vsync.. yet, in this current version my game has frequent microstutters (small/fast video stutters that are visible in spite of FRAPS still showing 60fps SOLID). The old version was 100% smooth with NONE of this.

Turn it from Internet, to LAN mode and the stuttering goes away.

I wish I could play multiplayer again... each update breaks something else.

There has only been one update?

There have been three updates. First one after 2 hours of release to delete the pdb files. Second was about 5 hours after release and was 200 something KB and deleted something else. Third one was 76MB and fixed a lot of stuff, including the Y for no-clipping.

We still got a bugged game. We can't even play co-op mode as it was disabled silently. What's up with that? The game is pretty good, but we need this stuff fixed ASAP.

What the hell you're talking about. I've played yesterday evening, and co-op works fine. I even started solo, and at some point it told me that (insert player name here) was at the same place as I am, and it asked me to press J to join him. And it did work.

I agree, there are still some bugs, but another patch will be coming soon enought. The game is still playable.
