Dust 514 will be free to download and play for PS3

We at Neowin are in a great mood and it’s not because it’s Sunday but more because we have learnt that Dust 514, the exclusive PS3 MMOFPS which will exist within Eve Online, will now be free to download and free to play. The game was originally going to be priced at $10 to $20 but that has now been scrapped.

Extra costs include the in-game credit system called “Aurum credits”. The prices for credit bundles range from $10 to $100. You'll also be able to earn and use ISK credits, as in Eve Online. However, these can't be used at the Dust 514 store.

"There is no micro-transaction that you can do that gives you an unfair advantage over someone who hasn't paid anything," Brandon Laurino, executive producer for Dust 514, told Eurogamer.

This is the first bit of news we've heard of Dust 514 since E3. We still haven’t even heard of a specific release date but if you're curious and fancy waiting around for a new MMOFPS then this might be right up your alley.

We’ll most likely learn more at GDC so until then, we’ll keep you posted!

Will this game have a ridiculous learning curve like EVE?

From the videos it doesn't seem so. It looks like it will be just as assecible as any FPS out today except it will try to emphasize objective based play. Good for them for making it free, just means that many more people will play it, but I wonder if this is a sign that it might not live up to all the promises and hype. I do really love the concept though, it's amazing if people could find a way to tie more MMOS like this, Battlefront to TOR for example? lol, definately a nice concept.

I have been looking forward to this but not following up on the news too closely.. I was expecting at least a PC version. Looks like that isn't happening.. Very peculiar choice seeing as EVE is purely PC and has a devout following there.

Bah to PS3 only!
I own a PS3 so while normally I'd disagree with your "Bah", in this case I agree since I prefer to play FPS on PC.

Sweet. My clan is looking forward to this game, and one of the members has saved up credits to share with us.

I am actually really looking forward to checking this game out, and I have never even touched Eve Online. I just think it is a real interesting concept of having an FPS that exists in an already established game universe and the events in said FPS actually affect everything. It sounds cool on paper, but how it actually winds up playing out is the million dollar question IMO.

Agreed. The developers are doing the right thing so far. Hopefully the game matches their vision of a great free online experience .
