Dynabook refreshes the Tecra lineup with Intel Comet Lake

Tecra A40-G

Ahead of this CES this week, Dynabook, formerly known as Toshiba, is refreshing its lineup of mainstream Tecra laptops. The company is introducing new models of the Tecra A30, A40, and A50, with the first number of the device's name referring to the screen size, so the A30 is 13 inches, the A40 is 14 inches, and the A50 is 15 inches.

The Tecra A30-G and A40-G are almost exactly the same, barring the screen size. Both come with Intel Comet Lake processors and up to 8GB of RAM, though there's an open slot that supports an extra 16GB if you need to expand. Storage goes up to 1TB on an M.2 SSD, and the battery size is 42Wh on both laptops. Both laptops also offer HD or Full HD displays, with the latter also coming in a touch-enabled variant.

As for ports, they have two USB Type-A ports, one USB Type-C, HDMI, Ethernet, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and a microSD card slot. There are also options for both fingerprint sensors and IR cameras for Windows Hello. Both laptops have the MIL-STD-810G rating for durability, too.

The Tecra A50-F is significantly different from the other two models, starting with the processors, which are still Whiskey Lake, but they support vPro. Intel only recently announced Comet Lake vPro processors, and Dynabook opted for the previous generations to keep the price down. It has two slots for RAM, up to a maximum of 32GB, storage maxes out at 1TB, but it can be either HDD or SSD. As for the battery, it's only slightly larger, at 45Wh, but it's removable.

Another thing that sets the A50-F apart is the built-in optical drive, which is increasingly less common in modern laptops but might have a purpose for specific use cases. Aside from that, there are a few more ports, with an extra USB Type-A port and a VGA port in addition to all the ports in the A30 and A40. It also has a full-size SD card reader, instead of microSD.

All of the laptops will be available in February from Dynabook, Amazon, and other resellers. The Tecra A30-G starts at $449.99, the Tecra A40-G at $399.99, and the Tecra A50-F at $929.99.
