E3 2011: More from Sony's Playstation press event

Our laptop battery died before we were able to complete the live blog of the Sony Playstation pre-E3 2011 press conference. Here are some of the highlights, in no particular order:

  • Sony really pushed its 3D gaming commitment during the press conference. A number of games will support 3D including Resistance 3, Uncharted 3 and more. In fact Sony will sell a 3D enabled 24-inch Playstation monitor this fall. The monitor will come with a set of 3D glasses, an HDMI cable and a free copy of Resistance 3 for just $499. In addition Sony will sell a set of 3D glasses separately for just $69.99.
  • CCP Games, the developers of the long running space based MMO EVE Online, announced that its upcoming console shooter game Dust 514, will be a Playstation 3 exclusive. It will also link to EVE Online in some capacity. Closed beta testing will begin by the end of the year and Dust 514 will launch in spring-summer 2012.
  • BioShock Infinite will support the Playstation Move console when it comes out in 2012. Developer Irrational Games also announced that it is working on another game set in the bioShock universe for the new PS Vita portable console. No other details were announced.
  • Sony announced plans for Playstation Suite which will bring Playstation games to Android-based devices. No other details of this program were announced.
  • Sony will release a PS3 version of the two God of War PSP games with better graphics and 3D support later this year. Also two classic PS2 games, Ico and Shadow of the Colossus, will be bundled together and released on the PS3, remastered and with 3D support.

Until glasses free 3d comes out with normal viewing angles the vast majority of people are not going to care. They've been trying to push 3DTV for decades and we still need to wear glasses and keep are head in a certain spot for the effect to work.

Sony just wants to push over priced TV's on us all and use the PS3 like a trojan horse whihc they did with BLU-RAY.

Yeah, compared to what MS is bringing to the table this is kinda lackluster. I'm kinda upset that CCP decided to make DUST 514 a PS3 exclusive, as the lack of universal voice chat and the generally poor server of the PSN has dashed my hopes for this game. Hopefully they come to their senses and release a XBOX 360 and PC versions as well.

Otherwise its Sony doing what its always done, push technology to sell TV's and devices. I'm personally not a fan of "3D". Never cared for 3D movies, TV, games, etc.. there is always way more hype then they deserve, and frankly the eyestrain and headaches are no fun either.

Oh great 3D gaming, with todays horrible 3D technology which either gives you horrible flickering or passive glasses that only work at the right angle and you see the interlacing. and both of them with annoying crosstalk. No thanks.

3D looks cool, but it's just not good enough yet. and unless your tv is 120 inch and you're sitting right in front of it, it looks weird anyway, of course the 3D glasses wouldn't work very well in that situation anyway but.

Totally agree, this 3D obsession is crazy. This is why I was extremely disappointed with the 3DS as they seemed to jump on the bandwagon with it. Sony might be doing the same in some aspects, but at least it's with something I really don't care about. Their handheld is focusing on what a mobile console should be, not stupid gimmicks.

Shadow of the Colossus on PS3..../drool
Let's not even get me started on how awesome it will be to be able to play the other two games in the GoW series without having to try and pry the PSP out of my wife's hands, lol.

Do we really need another hand held...

Given the release of the 3DS, I'd say yes. Maybe one that's actually worth the money... :\
