E3: Goldeneye remake for Nintendo Wii

The original Goldeneye from Rare on the Nintendo 64 was arguably the greatest game of its time. With big companies like Microsoft trying to port the original on its console, deals fell through.

But now, Nintendo will be bringing back the classic, exclusively to the Wii. The remake will see eight original characters return, including Jaws and Oddjob, with original stages, multiplayer experience and much more. It's not fully known if the game will be a complete 100% remake or include new stages and objectives.

The original version of the game was developed by Rare and published by Nintendo on Nintendo 64. It featured up to 4 players and a single player campaign.  Since it's release, groups have been attempting to remake the classic for PC, in Goldeneye: Source - A game developed on the Half Life 2 engine, for the PC.

The new Goldeneye 007 for Wii is scheduled to release this holiday season.

Ugh. More annoying Wii bashing.
I'm excited to try it out but I doubt it'll be as good as the original. As others are saying, it'll be hard to beat.

It's one of the greatest games... back then. Today, in a world where there is a lot more decent competition in FPS multiplayers, I doubt it would stand very strong. I mean, it already has a few strikes going against it. Unnecessary changes, graphics, Wii only...

Don't get me wrong either, I love Goldeneye 64. I just don't think this will cut it.

Yeah, Wii only. What a stupid move on the best-selling console. Cause the exclusives on the 360 and PS3 never do good, right?
To be fair though, I don't see this doing that great.

Wii had outdated graphics when it came out. Now it's just pathetic. Even if the gameplay turns out to be awesome, it will be that much harder to take in the fact that it gets hindered by puny aesthetics.
Games are also about immersion (video, sound, input) and the quality of immersion is influenced by expectations from technology advances. It may sound silly to those who think that only gameplay matters, but it's at least food for thought.

The most important thing to me is that they maintain the feel of the old game, I dont care if they update the graphics, but if the movement isn't the same (including all its quirks) then its a fail.

It all looks revamped. I guess they had to since neither Microsoft or Nintendo have the rights to release the game on their virtual markets. It's effectively a new game. Hopefully it wont be but I can see fail all over this.

nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
the N64 had better graphics, seriously, this looks like kids with aids starving to death.

goldeneye 64 had 2 things:
1. Graphics
2. Gameplay

Nowadays, teh Wii lacks considerably in the graphics department and I imagine they will focus gameplay towards motion sensing... in Other words = Flop

No, but there is such a thing as being reasonable...

Obviously he just trolled @ my comment, graphics for ME do play an important part in games, sorry if you like looking at 9 year old gamecube graphics.
And let's face it, Nintendo is obviously going to neuter game play to involve more motion sensed cr*p.

Don't get me wrong, I loved goldeneye 64, but I can't see goldeneyeWii getting that kind of love from the gaming community.

your 1000 percent right!

that motion sensing stuff is basically for the non-serious gamers.

and i don't see the game being a huge hit like the original N64 was as the N64 version was one of the top selling games for the N64. (GoldenEye was about the only shooter i liked a lot on a console as once consoles got modern which was the PS2/XBox era then i gotten to used to mouse+keyboard at that time and i could not go back)

p.s. as for your graphics comment... i think they do play a part to a certain extent but at the end of the day the gameplay is always #1 (which the Wii will probably lack lol)

Who cares? Non-serious gamers play games and BUY games too. What is it with the Wii and it's "non serious gaming" platform that is so negative to people??

I suspect Goldeneye 1997 plays better in peoples memories than it will on the Wii.

of course it does! .. it's all "nostalgia" ... because anyone who was a big fan of it 'in it's day' (like me i played in in 1997/1998 pretty heavily) clearly must not have played it recently as it's not nearly as good as i remembered it.

so basically there just trying to milk the nostalgia people have to get sales. but the thing is... i would bet most of the people who loved GoldenEye don't use Nintendo products anymore (and moved on to XBox360/PS3) since they have not has a good system since N64 overall.

Daniel Craig? Goldeneye? WTF?

Must be because of licence. He _is_ Bond at the moment, so any likeness thereof needs to tie up.

wasnt there a game just a couple of years back with a bond looking like sean connery?

They could have at least updated the graphics...

Lol, funny reading this comment As much as technology has advanced even the wii in ways looks better than the Nintendo did, but you have to realize that the Wii wasn't designed as a graphically intense console from the start. Take a look at CalloFDuty 4 "Modern Warfighter" when compared with 360 or PS3.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...FmsztYg&feature=related <-- 360
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9bHIERf5YLw <-- PS3

Make sure you watch it in highest quality also in widescreen.

I always thought that Goldeneye sucked :-P. That is all my friends wanted to play back in the day, and I thought it was slow and boring. Now, Quake... THATS a FPS worth playing even today. Fast pace, action packed, and with rocket jumps!

I guarantee you that in this case (as well as a few others...) E3 has been the harbinger of bad tidings...

This in particular can only end in ruin if it's being reproduced on a COMPLETELY INFERIOR system such as the Wii. (The Wii looks like complete crap on my awesome 46" 1080p TV. You're talking about stretching something to THREE TIMES it's original size and expecting it to look good. It looks like TOTAL CRAP.)

If they won't release it in HD on a system that will perform, then I have NO INTEREST. To hell with'em.

Maybe they'll get smart about it later after it FAILS with us veterans and reconsider the other platforms... They always say that they'll only make it this way or that...but then later they sometimes change their mind.

We can only hope.

Hilarious. You are a "veteran" are you? Tell me, what war were you involved in? Veitnam?

Do you really think you are better because you insist on "HD" games? I use the term "HD" for your sake, since you probably don't realize that PCs have had "HD" for years before the XBOX360/PS3 was released. Since you are so obsessed with graphics, you have a PC right? No?

Anyway, someday, after you have been playing games for a long time, you will learn a) to respect innovation (referring to the Wii in general) b) artwork is more important than resolution and c) it is not only about you.

"To hell with 'em"

I don't expect it to have the same "wow" factor as the original, in fact - who is that "Bond" meant to be? It's not a Brosnan clone, and look very much NOT like Daniel Craig...

Only 8 original characters too? How are they going to fit Trev, Oumorov, Natalya, Boris, Valentyn and the rest from the Goldeneye game in?

I enjoyed the single player as much as the multiplayer. I really hope they kept it intact, for the most part. There's no doubt that they added elements, but I hope the core game is still the same. I'll probably still pick it up

1) Bond (not really an original since his avatar changed)
2) Trevelyan
3) Natalya
4) Ourumov
5) Boris
6) Mishkin
7) Xenya
8) Valintine

Those are all the major characters that actually showed their faces in the original. Note that M, Q, and a lot of other characters from the movies didn't get integrated into the game.

Correct me if I missed any major player.

Probably the worst gaming platform this could be on, really. Might as well play it on an iPhone.

Don't knock the iphone...I am amazed how good the gaming is getting on the iphone. I just played 2xl on the iphone and while the game itself is ok the graphics are really good.

Yeah, saying that is offensive to the iphone, what

If you gave the game next gen graphics then it wouldn't feel as special.

I just came...

Upon further reflection, based on the game play footage, it seems disappointing...
1) They should have kept Brosnan
2) Whats with the Splintercell styled melee? I want my slappers...
3) I don't remember riding in a truck shooting stuff...

We shall see when it comes out if it lives up to the original...

Congrats for having criticism that is not solely based on Wii's graphics.

Conjor said,

it's unlikely simply because of the Nostalgia everyone has with the original. the image everyone has built up in there minds makes it almost impossible for the remake to top the original. lol

Its a shame the 360 version could not be published, I think that would have been one amazing remake. It will be interesting to see what happens with this anyway, although I will not be able to buy it either way.

because the low resolutions that is HD is so much better than the standard definition that the wii use?
This is coming from someone gaming one the wii, 360 and pc...

i feel like laughing when people talk about HD consoles and HD movies...
and seriously the resolution is not what makes the graphics good, look at the ps3 most games could use some serious AA the resolution doesnt help it one bit

You're seriously arguing that the graphics on the Wii are as good as the 360/PC/PS3?

The Wii's lack of power and no HD is obvious when comparing Wii titles to 360,PS3,PC

TCLN Ryster said,

He was saying that resolution is not the only thing that makes a game look good. There are 1080p games out there that looks like total garbage. Graphical quality is a combination of artwork and technical capabilities such as lighting, shadows, AA, etc.

Of course the PS3/XBOX360 has more graphical capabilities than the Wii, but it is not just resolution that matters. HD is a term used by fanboys, salesmen and commercials.

I take it that he has a Wii. So... yessssssssssssssssssss for him, not so much for you.

Sebianoti said,

Exactly! ... most of the people who really liked that game moved on to better consoles like PS3/XBox360.

but to be honest... no matter what they do it won't beat the GoldenEye on N64 because of the nostalgia i got from it because the game NOW is not nearly as good as i remembered it as it's kind of outdated. but in it's day it was great as i played multiplayer A LOT with my cousin back when GoldenEye was new (mostly the 'archives' level as that was great for 1 on 1 ) as that was the last shooter i really liked on a console because by the time consoles got modern (i.e. 2000/2001 with PS2/XBox) i moved onto the superior PC for shooters and i cannot go back as it's just to hard to aim with a analog stick vs a mouse.

but i guarantee this new GoldenEye game on Wii is just trying to milk the nostalgia people had of it. lol

p.s. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tyBSU60ZOqk ... that should be quite funny for those who played GoldenEye in the old days
