Easy work-around delivers NoDo update to WP7 devices

While NoDo has been taking its sweet time to roll out, several work-arounds have been discovered that can help you obtain the update a bit faster. This latest work-around is reporting the highest overall success rate of any discovered so far and can be done in just a few steps.

The work-around comes from WPcentral (via XDA) and will only work on devices that are in the "delivering update" phase according to Microsoft. To obtain the update, follow the steps below:

  1. Start Zune
  2. Turn off Data connection and Wifi on the Phone
  3. Connect the Phone with the PC (USB)
  4. Start the update search in Zune
  5. About 3 seconds later, disconnect your PC from the internet (Turn WLAN off).
  6. Zune finds NoDo-Update. Press OK.
  7. Connect to the internet again and install the update.

Many users are reporting that this trick has worked for them but be warned it may take a couple tries. Reminder, this will only work if your device is in the "delivering update" phase according to Microsoft, if it is not, then this work-around will most likely fail for your device.

While NoDo may be getting rolled out now to select devices, Mango has finally started to surface. Hopefully though, by the time Mango is rolled out, Microsoft will have worked out a better deployment model so users are not as frustrated with Mango as they are with Nodo.

Guys... I've tried this for many times without success (I have Omnia 7 Unlocked), It always says "Your phone is Up to date"... I have updated the phone to the pre-NoDo version, but now I can't get the NoDo itself.
I think this may be related to the fact I'm using 2-ways satellite connection to get to the internet (I live in Libya) and the IP addresses seems to be from an Emirates provider, Could that be the problem?

Shouldn't step 2 be 'turn off data connection and turn ON WiFi'?

Otherwise you wouldn't be able to turn it off in step 5

I did this the other day following the XDA thread (connected to the Norwegian VPN) - worked a charm.

Got the update after following the steps on the t-mobile forums for HD7 phones. You can "trick" the phone into grabbing the update early. I am on step 8 of 10 now... let's hope it was worth the 15 attempts I made trying to get the timing right.

Also got a HTC 7 Trophy with Vodafone Australia..
Worked for me too!
Took me a few attempts but all good now.. and NODO makes the phone so much more snappier!
One thing I have noticed (and I would love to see if anyone else has seen the same..) is that on some programs, the background colour looks a bit weird.. ie the colours don't fade into each other like they did before the update/they dont have that smooth-looking finish anymore..
For example: "Rain?" start screen, "Who's Near Me" start screen, "Wikipedia Search" tile and start screen..
Anyone got thoughts? Thanks!

It appears to be working like a charm here, %23 done backing up my phone, the trick is to immediately disconnect from the internet as soon as you hit UPDATE in Zune, what I did was just hit Update with my right hand in Zune and immediately with my other hand pull my Ethernet cable from my router, and presto! it worked, first try.

I also confirm this is working.

HTC Trophy 7 in Australia on VodaFone

Much love for posting this.

For those attempting this at home.

DO NOT DISABLE THE NETWORK INTERFACE. Zune auto detects this and says that it can't detect an update. Simply disable wireless, plug in your computer via Ethernet cable, then pull the cable.

Regarding timing, some other people stated that at around 10-11 seconds, they got the failed to update message, but worked at about 9. This was pretty damn close to what mine was

Installing as we speak

What I want to know is why the updates are staggered. Windows Update doesn't release updates out to a few folks at a time, so why is the phone segment, which is far smaller, handled differently?

Got it on second try, had to wait 4-5 seconds before dC'ing the net or it couldn't even get to the zune update servers to check anything at all.

Installing as of now,

HTC HD7, T-mobile USA unlocked, using it in Turkey with Turkcell (turkish carrier),

Hope nothing messes up ^^

Hmm, just found something odd, my text messages don't seem to be sending or if they are sending they are not appearing in the conversation.

Edit: It seems they are sending but just dont seem to want to appear in the conversation.... didn't have this problem before the update...

Worked for me, just downloading update now, OrangeUk, Mozart. Lol made a mistake though, found the update after about 4 seconds, anything less and zune just said it couldn't access the update service due to lack of internet. First time I manged to get it, forgot to re-enable my network connection so it couldn't download the update, doh!

So when zune manages to find the update, click update to get to the black screen telling you the features of the update, then re-enable internet connection then press update again.

I am not sure why everyone is so desparate about the update since the operating system appears to be excelent without it. However, I did get the update last night via Zune without doing this process. Everything worked just fine on my HTC Mozart

Oh in addition, for some reason, I keep getting a signal even though I turned off my data on my HD7, so I turned on Airplane mode, and that is when it finally worked out for me.

Installing as we speak. It definitely depends on how fast is your Internet connection. I had to unplug my LAN cable as soon as I press the Update button.

Rogers just released it or something... I disabled the data connection and wifi from phone. Installed the Zune software on my work computer and upon the first connection and clicking settings/update i was notified of the update! It is currently underway at 8/10 tasks complete! WOOT!

I didn't need to disconnect my ethernet or anything, it just prompted me straightaway.

Weird - it said it was updating/downloading, etc and appears to have updated the Zune software, but not the HTC 7 Pro - still on 7.0 7008. Now I can't get it to see updates. Anyone else getting this?

Worked on the second try. Needed to wait 4-5 seconds. I think this depends on the internetconnection.

@Unimatrix Xero Let me know if it works I've got the same issue as you!

ive given up mate lol im tired of trying and not getting anywhere

Reminder, this will only work if your device is in the "delivering update" phase according to Microsoft, if it is not, then this work-around will most likely fail for your device.

do you count from the second you press the 'update' button in the zune software or start from when the pinkish bar gets to the end?

either way i cant sodding do it!! gggaahhhhhhh

easy my rear end lol

Actually, step 6 is misleading. If you press OK you are dismissing the update. YOU SHOULD PRESS UPDATE INSTEAD. I made that mistake and Zune took me back to the previous screen and the update disappeared. It's easy to do step 5 however.

It works!
Good luck

It worked! But I had to disconnect a lot faster than three seconds. I did it almost immediately. Three seconds is too slow.

Worked for me, but it took a few attempts - best trick is to place your network window side by side with the zune software so you can disconnect quickly.

**Estimated testing completion date is early April 2011

where did you hear that about the testing completion date? I'm hating AT&T more and more. The Focus is by far the best WP7 phone and it doesn't deserve to be treated this way. -- UPDATE: sorry just noticed that the note is on the where's my update site.

Heh, I just saw that today myself. With luck this means a monday the 4th rollout, or potentially even tomorrow- The NoDo update is out! Happy April fools! - but more likely the 15th... Because it is AT&T

and I think MS said they need about 10days to start delivering after the testing is complete. Honestly the update itself isn't a big deal, i would just like to be on the band wagon!

Change MobileOperator registry string to 000-88 and both worked for my Samsung Focus and LG Quantum on AT&T. Change it back to ATT-US after the update was done. Both devices are still developer unlocked and no relocks when syncing with zune.
