Facebook Messenger for Windows XP & Vista released

Even if you're still using the decade old Windows XP, (or forced to, for whatever reason) Facebook doesn't mind, because it has recently provided an update to Facebook Messenger for Windows to support both XP and Vista. Previously, the app which was released back in March only supported Windows 7.

Imagine this, but then with the Luna theme.

When you are logged into the Messenger, you can chat with your Facebook friends without having to go to the Facebook web page itself. It also allows users to see your latest Facebook stalker friend requests, be notified if there is any friend activity such as a comment or a new friend approval or if they have been tagged in a photo. Otherwise, the app is a pretty bare bones affair in terms of features. There's no support for voice or video chat, which is a bit odd since Facebook has a partnership with Skype.

We can't find any release notes for this particular update, other than knowing it now works on older versions of Windows, supports group chats, and appear offline to a certain individual. But to be honest, if you're still running Windows XP at home, you probably don't care for them anyway.

Grab it here.

Is Neowin too lazy to install it on an old machine and take a screenshot? They post a Windows 7 one instead? Come on guys.

Are you lacking the ability to imagine the same thing only with a Luna window border around it?

Still no support for Windows 8. You still have to find other methods to download it.

Set the installer to Windows 7 comparability.

I have it installed. I'm just saying they haven't officially supported it yet. If you go to the site to download it using Windows 8, the download link won't show up. You have to find other methods to download it. Once downloaded, it doesn't matter, it'll install.

Just change your user agent to match windows 7 and then you can download it.

Its almost like FB doesn't want to push a load of XP users at other services.
Luckily MS didn't have to worry about that when brining out IE9 as there was no other browsers that XP users could be forced into using...

It's almost like Orange Battery doesn't know what the hell he's talking about.

Luckily, the smarter people here don't have to worry about that and they just get on with their lives.

XP is old and tired. No reason it should be around anymore outside of a virtual machine.

Gonna go and personally take the XP machines out of the White House ?

I wonder how I always seem to disagree with every single thing that comes out of your mouth LOL

I want to know how old your car is (if you have one)
and i will then let you know if I THINK its ok for you to use.
If it's not older than 3/4 years than i guess i will LET YOU keep it
but otherwise I'm sorry but you will HAVE to get rid of it.

Also i GIVE people their opinions for free but you can always donate
It' not like I'm Microsoft or something where you have to PAY money
to receive your new opinion..

Smug tech nerds lol
Get over yourselves !

I have to fully agree with you on this one. As long as legacy hardware is around, so will the old OS-es... XP won't be dying anytime soon.

There is fTalk as well which is also great and has a Live Messenger 2009 type UI for FB chat if you are careful not to install the bundled crappy toolbar.

Tried it - doesn't show when you've sent or received a photo. I'll stick with the original client for this reason.

They also have a java app for mobile phones too. You know, for that old sony ericsson k750 you have laying around. lol.

I give em props, they do try to support practically extinct platforms. lol. I await the palm pilot facebook app.
