Facebook Messenger updated with iOS 7 styling

Facebook Messenger has been updated with a completely new design in the styling of iOS 7, it also includes new custom in-app sounds.

Another new feature allows you to send messages to people from your phone book that aren't in your Facebook friends list, and easily add new contacts just by entering a phone number.

Facebook messenger offers a free way to stay in contact with Facebook friends and more without crunching into your SMS allowance or data plan if used over Wifi.

The app is free to download from the Apple App store and you must have iOS 6 or greater to use it, or from the Google Play store for Android.

FB Messenger annoys me, why couldn't they include it within FB? The built in messaging on FB works OK, there's a few kinks of course because they put all the effort into the app. I don't get why though?

I refuse to install it because it collects a lot of information, unfortunately that's what you buy into with FB

They now kind of force you to use the app, since the old message option is gone from FB for iOS, instead you get redirected to messenger app, not complaining just pointing it out.

I upgraded to the new one on my iphone last night. It's really, really nice. I don't exactly understand the privacy concerns with giving facebook your phone number. It's illegal for them to sell it or use it maliciously.

All the reviews I saw on the play store basically screamed don't update, sms is gone and chat heads are gone now?
Also you can't use it at all even for facebook messaging without giving facebook your phone number? certainly will not be updating if that is the case

Chat heads are still there, I was using them in the beta version.

A neat app. The killer feature is of course the 1 billion user base, not the feature set per se, so most that I know are there. Kind of important for a communications app.

While there's always the privacy aspect to think of when it comes to Facebook, I like how Facebook became an actual e-mail replacement. I never use e-mails now, besides for receipts, user registrations, and in my work. Never for actual communications. This new spam-free world with never changing addresses to use is pretty wonderful.

It's funny how the social network revolution and riddance of mails kind of crept onto us. There was no app that suddenly removed the need, like Google Wave. We didn't need an awesome app that did a ton of things -- we needed the usage patterns to change en masse by getting them to come together on a different place than in the inboxes, and the key to that was not features (Facebook conquered the world with status updates on a website), but convenience.

Release a Messenger app for Windows Phone PLEASE. Windows Phone's built-in messaging keeps getting borked due to backend changes at FB.

Currently if someone on FB messages me i get a notification on my iPhone from FB app to which i can click and reply.. how is this different?

And if i install this will i receive a notification on both or does it kill the official app notifications?

Messenger allows you to use chat heads and send sms's (don't think the normal app can do that)

You won't get multiple notifications

Just seems like the built in messenger within the Facebook app.. but lighter and faster so i'll stick with it for now.. i hate fb but people regularly message me through it so this is great.

That's right, there was an APK available for download, but I believe that today is the first day it is on the Play Store for everybody to install

Really? I've only been getting my apps from the Play Store, and it definitely updated through there with the new interface a little while ago. Haven't got any beta version of it either (to my knowledge).

Not on the Play Store it wasn't.

Nope, it has been on the Play Store. Like I said in my last post, I downloaded Facebook Messenger through the Play Store, it's the regular version, not a beta, and it got updated to the new look for me about a fortnight ago on my dad's Nexus 7. And when I got my Nexus 5 ten days ago, I downloaded and installed the app again from the Play Store, and the new look was there too.

because they both use phone numbers to verify that this is "your contact". and btw it is auomatically added when update it and click yes yes yes - according to my girlfriend. also facebook has the mobile phone number now
