Facebook: More Popular Than Porn

Perhaps a more interesting — and more accurate — way to figure out where college students are going online is to assess which of the 172 web categories tracked by Hitwise get the most hits from 18- to 24-year-olds. Here's a shocker: Porn is not No. 1. I've actually been puzzled by the decrease in visits to the Adult Entertainment category over the last two years. Visits to porn sites have dropped from 16.9% of all site visits in the U.S. in October 2005 to 11.9% as of last week, a 33% decline. Currently, for web users over the age of 25, Adult Entertainment still ranks high in popularity, coming in second, after search engines. Not so for 18- to 24-year-olds, for whom social networks rank first, followed by search engines, then web-based e-mail — with porn sites lagging behind in fourth.

Either one is a pretty sad activity. Sit staring at porn, dreaming of the day that you might actually get a real woman or man, or sit typing to virtual friends, or trying to convince the world that you are far more interesting than you actually are.

maybe it's all the girls posting virtually naked photos, adn then there the other thing torrents, who needs to browse the web for porn just go straight to the download. last everyone already has plenty of porn to keep them occupied.

Maybe 18- to 24 year old's are actually having sex, so don't need as much porn. Never stopped me though :p

EDIT: Oops! Just read Co_Co's post.

Epimetheus said,
Facebook can burn in hell along with it's pedophiles.

Oh you're one of THOSE are you? Where social networking is just a giant paedophile network, along with the internet at large, chat rooms, and e-mail.

If you weren't posting on Neowin, i'd think you were Amish.

This isn't that shocking to me, but maybe that's because the people I know don't visit porn sites and everyone I know frequents Facebook quite often ... porn is just nasty.

People here are commenting about how 18-24 year olds are having actual sex more, which may be true but I think how much young people have sex is overestimated, a lot are virgins into college. But I think they don't realize what you said as much as they should : most people when they're young do think porn is nasty, and the women in porn aren't attractive. Porn is something some people get used to when they get older.

Ohhhww couldn't we have had a representative picture from "Porn" rather than the Facebook logo in the article

Well I guess porn will have to get more interactive in order to pull in more people!

It isn't that surprising though. firstly the majority of people into porn are males, yes there are females but the biggest audience is guys. With facebook, it appeals to both genders. Social networking also appeals mostly to the younger people which is why its #1 for 18-24 and porn is 4th.

Also the reason for 25+, porn is still 2nd is because 18-24 are the ages which they are still in high school to university. These are the biggest party years with a lot of sleeping around. So actual sex > porn. When you get older, some people start partying a lot less for various reasons and opportunities for sex may be less frequent thus more frequency to the good old porn sites.

So all in all, this isn't at all shocking.
