Fair Labor Association: Foxconn's Apple plant is "first-class"

According to the president of the Fair Labor Association, working conditions at the Foxconn plant that manufactures Apple's iPads and iPhones are far better in comparison to those of other facilities in China, reports Reuters. His comments come just a couple days after the announcement on Monday that Apple would be working with the FLA to conduct "special" inspections of some of the plants that manufacture Apple's products.

To prepare for the special inspections, President of the FLA Auret van Heerden has spent the past several days visiting Foxconn plants. After his initial visits to Foxconn, van Heerden said that "physical conditions are way, way above average of the norm" and that "the facilities are first-class."

"I was very surprised when I walked onto the floor at Foxconn, how tranquil it is compared with a garment factory," van Heerden said. "So the problems are not the intensity and burnout and pressure-cooker environment you have in a garment factory. It's more a function of monotony, of boredom, of alienation perhaps."

However, his comments are not an official conclusion on the overall working conditions at Foxconn and other companies. Investigators with the FLA will also visit the facilities of Quanta Computer Inc, Pegatron Corp, Wintek Corp and other Apple suppliers.

In an apparent move to preempt naysayers, van Heerden was dismissive of the idea that the FLA would go easy on Apple's suppliers. He said to Reuters, "Apple didn't need to join the FLA. The FLA system is very tough. It involves unannounced visits, complete access, public reporting. If Apple wanted to take the easy way out there were a whole host of options available to them. The fact that they joined the FLA shows they were really serious about raising their game."

Apple was the first technology company to join the Fair Labor Association when it joined last month.

Its monetary warfare at its finest and its one of the only ways to save the United States economy and get jobs back on this continent.. sorry for my econ lesson of the night

This is great. Often from my lowly position as a couch politician in NZ I feel that America blames Obama for EVERYTHING. He's selling the assets, spending the money etc. And unfortunately he will save the country just in time for the next election when He will be voted out and someone will step in at the right time for people to see a positive change and talk about how Obama was bad and XXX saved the day. LOL at how apple can have their plants inspected in like 3 days..

It's no more Apple's plant than it is Microsoft's (you know the Xbox is made there right?). The PS3 is made there also, as are just about all consumer electronics products.

I cannot believe you just said Obama will save the country. You are just as delusional as the Americans who voted him believing such ridiculous promises.

I just can not imagine how Milk Toast Reagan Republican Obama can get so much hate mail for doing a slow and steady job while pushing effectively a conservative agenda (look at everything public policy he has used, all of it has been republican in origin at one time even healthcare).

The problems we have will require a generation of work and changes to rebuild the broken parts of our economy. Especially manufacturing which is what this story is actually about. I hate seeing people hijack posts with your foolish political whining.

An audit never really takes long when it's not about checking if you're complying to an ISO standard. Plus, I didn't believe my eyes when I read that their team was 30 people. You never do that for an audit.

Maybe you missed the part where I quoted another person. In any case and in any context, it is moronic to say "Obama will save this country". It actually sounds like you would agree with me considering:

Funny enough, even with my response to you, I have clocked in with less words than you. So go talk about hijacking threads with your mirror.

Exactly. They scored bonus points for carting the dead away from the line in a timely manner...

a 97 billion dollar bribe? with all that cash lying around a few million to get a nice review wouldn't go astray!

its funny to see the all the apple haters pretend they care about the workers at a factory in china. If it wasn't Apple buy parts from them, you wouldn't (AND HAVEN"T) said anything previously about ANY OTHER company BEFORE apple rose to fame. All these other companies used Foxxcon WAY BEFORE apple and yet you stayed silent.

Indeed, since IBM, Intel and others are using Foxxcon plants for ages.
What about Nike, Mattel and others, its not like they are any better, it's not like it has been a secret for ages either.

Not to mention that Norwegian Hydro and other companies moved their most dirty production to China.
At least they look clean in their local countries.

When the others were doing it as a way to keep costs down in a highly competitive market, no one really thought about it.

When Apple came along and used Foxconn's forces to become the largest company in history (market cap) it seem just greedy and wrong.

So what you are saying is child labor, poor working conditions etc are ok as long as you dont make "too much" money? Or as long as the people running the company are incompetent enough to waste any margins they are gaining by the cheaper labour?

No. But apple has been the biggest hypocrites about it. They put on this show of social responsibility, when they are just as bad as everyone else.

Ever looked at other devices...they probably say "Made in China", but not apple, they are "designed in _________" or assembled in China.

Its basically to keep the fanboys happy that they are not buy those inferior "Made in China" products. Guess it hurts to know your icrap comes from the same place as everyone elses crap.

An inspection that gives various days of anticipation before doing it. Totally legit.

Try reading the article again (instead of just the headline it seems). There hasn't been any inspections yet it's just some comments made from initial floor walks, which won't factor at all with the real inspections. But it's a good indication
