Looks fine, but seems that they focused on implementing a minimalista metro interface even if that meant hindering usage.

At first sight it looks clean (which is an improvement over the cluttered previous one) but then using it you need to go down several levels to access basic functionality that didn't make it to the minimalistic root levels.

I guess it's hard to implement a minimal design and not fall for the form over function.

Please god let their be a huge security flaw discovered in this new version which allows people to run homebrewed code without opening the Xbox up.

Metro looks good on the 360, it doesn't look as plain and flat as it does on the WP7 devices... and on windows 8 tech preview... still think metro doesn't look right in desktop environments though

Running pre release and no update as of yet, come on MS.

Also on the preview and no update for me either!!! Did I miss the memo stating that we are not getting it?? ;-)

You guys might want to check the Microsoft Connect main page, you've had the final dashboard for a week or so.

The preview program is running till the end of the year.

I previously said I didn't really care for the Metro interface but I think I was wrong. I am loving this update. Can't figure out how to get live TV though.

Whats the REAL benefit of updating? I dont play online so if I dont update this wont really affect me at all?

If you modded your console this will break it.

meh im not sure i liek it either, i use my xbox soley for streaming and just to do that now sucks, would be nice to use a tile and customize it to automaticly go to where iw ant it to go

Terrible
It's so caotic that made me reconsider metro as ubiquitous ui
now there are less information in the screen, the text in the tiles sometime is almost illegible, and the need to use both analog and both shoulder button just to navigate the hub is antintuitive
And why order the game alpabetically when in a single screen i was able to found everything in a moment?
Bing is the only real improvement, if only they can change that single row alphabet list...

You anti-metro people can't make your mind up. First it's "too much whitespace" now it's "too chaotic"?

I'm not anti-metro in general, but it's implementation here is horrible, on a console? not working for me.
And don't get me started on the My Games section, at this point the previous dashboard was far superior for what I do, which is play games, not tweet or look at ads.

The only good thing about this update is the fact is starts on Home where you start a game, but they make up for that one good thing by making most of the things on that tab not related to your games or your most used items.

Home should be completely customizable with items you select, and where you want them, maybe I want the play game option in the middle as the biggest option, maybe I want the Video and Music Players off to the side, if I tweeted or used Netflix, maybe I'd want those there too.

you anti-normalthinkingpeople people don't stop talking before thinking
i'm experimenting metro in my software too, but this don't make me blind against the usability problems of this new interface
a ui language that's made to show more information and hides most of the usefull information compared to the past version?
even the orizontal scroll in the contents is dumb! early all the contents would slide toghether showing new one on the border, now i have to scroll to the border so that a new row appears
and why change the friend list? why make them jump with slow and annoing animation?
and for Cox sake why shrink the contents so much in the middle of the screen? you are using half the height to show contents, and the rest is only padding!
why make so tiny tiles and not adding a litthe shadow under the text to make it leggible against the whitish background?
why make the navigation controls antintuitive?

Sure for someone with a big screen and kinect this can have some pros, but i'm in the remaining 80% user base that doesn't have them

Use the bumper buttons (AKA shoulder buttons or RB, LB)

I know, this was made me realize that this new paradigm is antintuitive, cluttered, and will never be friendly to casual gamer
when the last was usable with only the left analog to go where you wanted and then a single A click

I'm in the UK and have been running the beta version of this...........How can I tell that I've been updated to the final release? - I take it that it will no longer show the pre-release section on the dashboard (which it still is)

Correct.

Correct.

Incorrect! My dashboard still shows pre-release (I'm from Brazil) and on the version number its the final one since December 1st. I tought that after yesterday, my xbox would update again, but it seems it wont until a new dash update is released. I've even deleted the beta registration from games menu and nothing happened.

I am looking forward to downloading the new dashboard update tonight however my question which i missed or didn't see in the video is the main dash board categories

Bing - Home - Social - Video - Games

Is it possible to rearrange them, i use my xbox purely for gaming, and would much prefer

Bing - Home - Games - etc

Thanks for the replys, I think the recent games will probably be enough

Well I think the next gen. Xbox console won't have a hard drive, maybe a small capacity SSD and full cloud based storage for everything!

What about DLC?

We're not even close to that, it's been proven time after time that companies cannot be trusted with your data, and any TOU they make you agree to makes it ok for them to lose all your data with no recourse.

It will have a hdd , I am pretty sure that Ms will move to a download service for buying their games. I mean in 3 years of PC gaming,i bought one DVD base game and all the rest on dlc services like steam, steaming game is good for demo, but the quality is actually worst then Xbox becausr of the compression..

Try to sue a hard drive company for lost data due to a hard drive failure.

i love the new interface. and i really hope they will add those shadow/3d-background-effekts to the windows (phone) 8 start menu. if only because to have a consistent user experience across all screens

And me, I hate it, they're moved everything I use down a level, so I have extra clicks to get where I want.
The Metro UI may be good for a touchscreen, but as a console UI where you need to use a controller or remote, it sucks, and now pressing play on my remote to play a video doesn't mean play, it means go to another window that only has Play on it, then press play again......

It would be much better if you could change the tiles from their default to what you want there, or at the very least have one tile in each catagory you could customize to your most used item.

Consistency is good and all, but across a single platform, not all of them, what works on a phone doesn't necessarily work on a console and computer also.
/rant.....for now.

Metro works on everything, as it was designed by investigating the real world.

To your point about everything being extra clicks, did you know the original blade system that you get by pressing the xbox button hasn't changed since the first release, and it's still the fastest way to access any content.

So if you don't like Metro interface, use the xbox button on your controller instead.
We can please everyone, with choice; and the illusion thereof.

It a technical sense it works yes, in a functional sense, it doesn't work at all.

I was aware the xbox guide does everything I want, and I have been using that since the update, so your solution is though, since the new dashboard is cluttered and put all the options people use down a few levels, and if they want to use the functions of a GAMING/MEDIA CONSOLE faster, they should use the guide and not the dashboard.

You're right though, they can please everyone, but they haven't here, they've offered NO choice as you say, you can't keep the old style of dashboard, you can't even customize the home tab with items you use, there is NO choice with the new dashboard.

Even though I like the metro UI, I have to admit that I hate how the tiles are pretty much thrown in there. Same applies to the Windows 8 Start Menu: Fantastic concept but the apps are just in the middle without any categorisation or grouping. Not sure if that changed but thats how it felt with the Dev preview

no categorisation????!!?!?!?! The categories are listed at the top! are you crazy? see where it says "videos, music, games, apps... " those are categories of tiles..

I personally like it alot more just because of the fact it looks cleaner on a 46 inch screen.. when i was using the old dashboard i felt like it was made for a 27" screen and was just too much in your face.. I have found it a bit difficult to use the remote but now i find i use voice now more then i thought i woud.. its just so easy
