Fallout 3 granted Australia release

Australia's Office of Film and Literature Classification has passed the revised version of Fallout 3, giving the RPG a rating of MA 15+ and revealing the reasons behind its decision.

According to the censor board's report, acquired by IGN, the positive representation of drugs as power-ups in Fallout 3 was the main cause of concern. However, following the game's ban last month, Bethesda Softworks has toned down the depiction of drugs, earning the title an MA 15+ rating.

The report says the drugs themselves have all been given new names, while images of drug-taking have been removed and replaced by icons: "The drugs depicted are fictional; drugs are depicted as stylised icons on a menu with the drug use itself not depicted," read the report.

just because you can do something, doesn't mean you have to do it ... the game was actively condoning drug use the developers should never have put it in the game ... and then there is the other point ... its just a game ...life goes on and everyone should get over it

you're just a fascist little mofo aren't you? It totally explains quite possibly the most ignorant and stupid sentence I've ever read:
"maybe your ****ed up rating system and lack of proper and sensible censorship is the reason why the US is full of wack jobs shooting up schools."

You are seriously messed up.

why is everyone so ****ed off? the changes that were made had nothing to do with gameplay, and the whole US the best country ... maybe your ****ed up rating system and lack of proper and sensible censorship is the reason why the US is full of wack jobs shooting up schools.

Um, because censorship is a BAD thing. We're ****ed off because the game is getting censored. Period.

By the way, what sort of sick freak are you that you actually think there's such a thing as "proper and sensible censorship"? That's like pondering how you could build a sensible and proper Nazi party, or a sensible and proper Stalinist dictatorship. I hear George Bush has some "sensible" and "proper" indefinite detention without trial going on, does that turn your crank too?

Look, Fallout 3 is NOT aimed at kids. It's not for kids, it never was supposed to be for kids, it will never really be for kids. IN fact, the whole Fallout franchise is firmly in the Mature/Adult category. Hell, in Fallout 2 you could meet a farmers daughter, seduce/be secuced by her, get married to her at gunpoint, and then take her to New Reno and whore her out for cash. In case you haven't noticed, This is not a children fantasy game we're talking about here. But, the wonderful group of people who censor stuff at the Australian censors don't seem to understand that just because it's a video game doesn't mean it's for kids.

It's not our problem that they don't enforce the "M For Mature" rating and just let anyone buy a mature title. If they would just get their bloody act together and enforce the damm ratings they wouldn't have to resort to draconian measure like censorship.

aw. gee. that should make a couple of aborigine gamers very happy.

seriously, does this piece of crappy info (i won't even call this news) even warrant reporting?

Tell me about it, it's perfectly fine to watch the player character shoot up in plain sight with an oversized needle [in BioShock] but Fallout 3 gets banned for the mere mention of it...it's hypocritical and outright stupid! what we have running this country? brain dead zombies?!?

Yes. You see, the game actually features brain-dead zombies, and the brain-dead zombies on the Australian Board Of Video Game Censorship (besides wanting to eat your brains) were offended by the deception of their ethnic group (that is, the undead), which is why they initially banned the game. However, after sampling the brains of some game developers and finding them appealingly chewy and, on the whole, rather tasty, they relented and only gave the game a MA 15+ rating.

man, if they made these changes to all versions of the game just to appease these Ausies i will be very disappointed. nothing against Australians, but Bethesda only furthers this ridiculousness by pandering to these stupid requests.

What you on about? the edited version is only for Australia (and possibly New Zealand as well, not sure?), US and the rest of the world will get the proper unedited version. What is worse is because Bethesda caved in and edited the game, they are giving the Aussie Government/OFLC more reason to block the R18+ rating (as if the developers of big profile games like this just fold in to their demands and edit the game, they will think R18+ is still not needed). Australia is in the stone age when it comes to gaming and it makes me feel ashamed to be Aussie

Only australia, it's maximum rating is MA15+. New Zealand has R18 available rating.

That didn't stop NZ from getting the same edited version of GTA4 as Australia did it?
